Monday - Bobby

Notes on:

  • injury progession (seems good)
  • OL construction (and why we should cut the coaching staff slack - meh)
  • UGA (they don't have any holes as a team and are more efficient than super effective this season)
  • Strategic factors for Texas that will decide the game (limit the run on early downs, force negative plays and TOs. Things UGA has been good at exploiting and not allowing in wins)

While several players went home over the long weekend before returning yesterday afternoon, Texas receiver Ryan Wingo stayed in Austin to receive ongoing treatment for the thumb he dislocated against Vanderbilt.

Wingo had made major progress during last week but he wanted to stay back in Austin to keep receiving treatment to make sure he’s as close to 100-percent as possible.

Wingo and safeties Michael Taaffe, Jelani McDonald and Xavier Filsaime are all still working through injuries this week.

**

With no Texas game to discuss, several folks on the message board started debating the decisions made during the off-season regarding the offensive line.

Some folks need to realize they don’t have all of the information.

First, Cameron Williams initially told Texas he would be returning to school for the 2025 season, similar to Trey Moore.

Not until after he went home for the break after the season did Williams decide to turn pro.

So when the portal opened, Texas did not think it would possibly need another tackle. To the contrary, the perception was that they were likely set.

Second, IOL Emanuel Pregnon visited Texas. Texas made a highly competitive offer, but he chose Oregon. You don’t win them all.

Hindsight is 20-20. And I’m not exactly sure why the consternation over it nine games into the 2025 season. Maybe it’s the Florida loss that still stings.

But there’s nothing that can be done about it now.

The Texas offensive line finally looked like it gelled against Vanderbilt. If they can do something similar against a more talented Georgia squad, all of the crying about the OL will be nothing more than spilt milk.

**

Georgia is favored by 5.5 in this game for good reason.

While they may not be the highest rated, Georgia is the most well-rounded team Texas will face this season.

The Bulldogs have a highly efficient offense and a well-coached, very talented defense. Their special teams are among the best in the country.

In short, they have no major “holes” or shortcomings.

**

Georgia’s defeat of Mississippi State was thorough. UGa was able to run the ball to set up the pass.

They will try to do the same against Texas. The right-side of the Georgia OL are both true freshmen. They are powerful and enormous.

If Texas can stop the run, the Bulldogs like to move to their short passing game and incorporate their tight ends.

Texas needs to get Georgia behind the chains on early downs. That’s easier said than done.

QB Gunnar Stockton is a massive improvement for them over Carson Beck. Stockton takes care of the ball much, much better. The Georgia receivers are also much improved from a year ago, including Zachariah Branch, who Texas tried to also lure from the portal.

The Georgia offense vs the Texas defense will be a big test for both sides.

I certainly wasn't using OU to predict Georgia. I'm just pointing out that you can't predict our offense based upon the opponent's defense. We've struggled against bad defenses. We've had success against very good and even great defenses. His "analysis" is far too negative. I think a key matchup is whether we are better able to control Georgia's TE then we have managed against other TEs the past few weeks.

That's all far. Texas has been much too inconsistent of a team (especially on offense at all positions) to simply use stats to predict outcome here.

However, the big predictor in my mind is I trust Kirby over Sark to scheme well and adjust over the course of the game. Throw in it's a road game for Texas and I think we lose. However, we certainly have the talent and potential to win.

Average is a shitty stat. Wisner ran for 57 yards on 21 carries (2.71 per) if you take away the one long carry of 37 yards. Our rushing attack from the RBs was terrible and ineffective most of the game. Wisner caught fire in the fourth quarter, especially catching the ball.

OU is not comparable to UGA, especially on offense and running the ball, where UGA has been extremely effective. OU's offense sucked and Texas scored only one offensive TD, a ST TD, and went 3/5 on FGs. If we play like we did against OU against UGA, especially on offense, we'll lose.

Amazingly, the long run still counts. And Wisner was quite effective against OU for anyone with functioning eyeballs. I agree that our success running against OU is largely based upon the styles of the two teams. But OU's defense is statistically a lot better than Georgia's. And Georgia's relative weakness defending the pass (62nd in pass efficiency defense, 58th in passing yards allowed, 81st in 3rd down defense, 119th in team sacks) happens to align with our relative strength (especially given the last couple of weeks).

- Georgia has the nation's 12th-ranked rushing defense. We have the nation's 96th-ranked rushing offense. Our hopes of generating a solid rushing game are vanishingly small, and without a ground game our play-action based offense is going to get stuck in the mud just like it did against Kentucky.

- Georgia's offense is much improved this year, with Stockton at QB and Noah Thomas + Branch at WR. Our secondary has struggled the past few games. Another bad matchup. Our LBs looked lost covering tight ends against both Mississippi State and Vandy, and Oscar Delp is one of the best tight ends in the SEC.

- So we need our defensive line to generate sacks and pressure. Unfortunately, Georgia's pass-protection is the best of anyone we've faced this year. They've allowed just 11 sacks so far this season, T-23rd best in the country. (By comparison, we've allowed 18).

No individual, position group, or overall matchup gives Texas an advantage. Probably going to see something like a 34-20 Georgia win, with our offense mired in quicksand all game and our defense ground down from spending too much time on the field.

This is obviously a pessimistic take, but I cannot say it does not have its merits. Texas is a 5.5 pt dog on the road. The volatility of Texas performances on both sides of the ball has been amazing this season. If both units play closer to their ceiling Texas has a legit chance to win this game. Either play anywhere near their floor and everyone here will be hammered by the 3q to numb themselves from the pain.

We may lose but to act like Georgia is gonna just blow us out like Austin peay is crazy - they actually struggled in that game. College football is so crazy each game is a one off really.  We might come out and light up scoreboard than lose to Arkansas. Georgia has struggled this year. It could happen. We’re insanely talented and can make a game of it. Georgia is not some special team that is blowing everyone out. It’ll be tough but can be done. Hook em

Because our OL fucking sucks, Bobby. The fact that they suck less now - after doing a lot of tinkering that should have happened in the off season - does not change the fact that they still suck.

I appreciate that Cole Hutson and Conner Robertson are good teammates or whatever, but they should not be starting at Texas. They should be experienced depth that we rely upon when one of our starters is hurt.

Nice dig, but that doesn't mean the outlier driving your statistical analysis make your point. While you're right that Wisner was effective in the later stages of the game, the run game was nonexistent and extremely poor in the first half. Overall, the average outside of one play was shit. Average can be, and was in this particular game, a false expectation of what would happen we Texas tried to run the ball. That is all true. So, while the average figure you presented was correct, it did not at all reflect what the run game looked like on the majority of carries and it's not why Texas won the game, overall.

Also, I might be wrong in this assumption, but one offensive TDs and three FGs will get us beat by UGA. If it ends up being wrong, I'll eat crow hard and admit it.

There seems to be a lot of misremembering of how that SEC title game played out just because we lost at the end. We were the ones throwing punches early.

But Kirby certainly will.  At least once.

I think Kirby's two brothers will be members of the reffing crew....so, we have a lot to overcome here.

Given that OU only gives up 2.3 per rush on average, I'm standing my position that the run game was quite effective against OU given the opponent. I have no idea why you're arguing this. Wisner's superhuman effort was a big part of the reason we won that game. And, again, Georgia's defense is not OU's defense. Statistically, they are miles apart.

You're cutting that shit awfully thin. How many conference road games against top 5 teams (at the time or at the end of the year?) do you think we've played in the last 20 years? The only conference road games vs top 5 teams since 2010 that I'm aware of are 2015 @ TCU and 2010 @ Nebraska. We are 1-1 in those games.

Fair point, the reason I cite conference games is that generally at beginning of the year you have those first 2 or 3 games where teams haven't lost a game yet and the rankings can be littered with preseason non-sense.

the last 4 road conference games against a top 10 opponent were what you mention plus @ #9 Baylor in 2013.

Kirby Smart has only lost in Athens 5 times and 3 were in his first year (2016)

Going to be a tall task for sure.

Maybe the refs will wanna see 5 sec teams in the playoffs and they won’t fuck us too bad?

we will know what Texas team we have when they run on to the field before kick off. If there’s lifeless dead energy with fear in their eyes like Florida.  Prepare your anus

Look, I agree with you that Wisner was a total differentiator in this game, especially receiving and getting YAC. I don't agree that our RB run game overall was effective. We did, however, fair better than other teams had up to that point against OU's run defense.

RB rushes over three yards by quarter:

  • 1st: 2 rushes, 8 & 4 yards
  • 2nd: 1 rush, 37 yards
  • 3rd: 4 rushes, 7, 9, 9, 5
  • 4th: 3 rushes, 4, 5, 7 (by Niblett)

Arch's rushes really helped our overall rushing effort too.

We won the game because we didn't turn the ball over (and OU did three times), the defense played really well, we absolutely halted any OU running game, and we had a ST TD.

We don't need to run this topic further. Overall, I am not optimistic about Texas' chances on Saturday, especially running the ball. In UGA's losses over the past couple of seasons, they got out rushed, and I do not believe we will do that. However, I will gladly be wrong if I end up being incorrect.

I don’t care if we run for 10 yds - just win baby. I think this is an oline game like most. If they play ok we’ll be fine. If they don’t it’ll be rough. And that goes for Georgia also. If they can’t block us they’ll be in trouble. Fuck em

The whole season can turn on this one game.

If Texas wins it, everything opens up for them.

Not optimistic but at least we got this deep in the season with this kind of opportunity.

I’d also add Arch and the WRs making timely plays as a reason we won the game.

In the quarters where our offense is good, we’ve been converting third downs through the air. It’s the 2023 Michigan formula, and it’s an area where we can actually find an advantage in this game given UGA’s defensive struggles on third down and with pass rushing.

I don't think our path to victory against Georgia is on the ground (although I also didn't think that against OU, and we definitely wore them down there). I'm going to point these out again: 62nd in pass efficiency defense, 58th in passing yards allowed, 81st in 3rd down defense, 119th in team sacks. Georgia's pass defense can be had. If Arch plays like he has been the last 6 quarters and if the re-shuffled oline just holds Georgia somewhat near their season average in sacks/pressures, we're going to move the ball with success.

I'm actually more worried about our defense versus Georgia's TEs. Hopefully having our safeties back helps a lot.

100% agree. But our OL needs to keep that a point of improvement for UGA. Can't have a shitty OL game this week.

Yeah Sark you gotta win this one
I've heard he does this to every coach on Georgias schedule, and even some he might face in the CCG or playoffs.

Probably learned it from Saban, wish we had a coach that learned from..

Oh wait, nvm

I've got a bit of optimism. I think we can win, but it'll take errybody playing well, not another one where offense or defense or specials fuck up and the other two carry the load and prevail. If all three play well, we win. Any one of them establishes pooch-screwing, and we likely lose... two eat shit and we definitely take the L.

Bottom line: there are multiple scenarios that end with a W for the Good Guys, and I won't be surprised at either outcome.

I hope I am wrong, but Texas is not going to come out and run the ball on Georgia. The only scenario I see Texas running the ball would be something similar to the Bama upset in Tuscaloosa. Sark dials up a gameplan with a lot short passing that keeps the offense on the field early. Georgia has lost a few DL, so I am not sure how deep they are up front. If Texas can stay on the field, there is a chance later in the game they can get the run game going.

Kirby will coach circles around Sark

The coaching matchup is def the most worrisome aspect of this game, easily
Kirby will be constantly jibber jabbering at any ref within earshot about every little piddly thing he sees on the field.

I know it sounds like loser talk, but I could definitely see this making a difference in the final score.

not sure if i agree that there is that much significance to this game but it would be a nice monkey off our back.  lost three games last year and two were to these fuckwads.  you cant say a win opens up everything, when a loss next week to arkie puts us right back on the bubble.  we just need to win, thats all there is to it.  i have a little optimism, as this team seems to play to their opponents level.  arch is coming on, OL is coming on, DL is coming on, secondary is on vacation.  this would be a nice win.

There is an enormous amount of significance to this game. Texas wins and suddenly everything becomes very possible. If we lose are we doomed? No but now we pretty much have to beat A&M to even have a shot.

But think of what a win might mean.

100%. A win here validates Texas in the eyes of all the people who wrote us off after the Florida loss and the back to back OT games again Miss St and Kentucky. All of the sudden a top 4 seed and SEC title are back on the table. A national championship is back in the equation. It all hinges on winning this game. And if we get blown out, kiss the playoffs goodbye, we are cooked.

you keep repeating what i already disagreed with.  a win solidifies a cfp berth.  except if we follow that up with a loss to arkie next week.  then we're right back where we are now - on the bubble.  you could argue that all three games have enormous significance.

I was just about to type the same thing. A win over Georgia legitimizes Texas to a lot of people who have already written us off.

Beating Vandy did the same thing, but to a much lesser degree. It showed people that Texas is a good team, but it didn't show that we're at the top of the sport. Beating UGA will give us the bona fides that voters need to put us in the CFP. Even if we lose close to A&M (God forbid), a win over UGA will probably be enough to get us over the hump. Gotta beat Arkansas obviously. I don't know if beating A&M gets us into the CFP if we lose to UGA. It's too easy to dismiss a win over A&M as a rivalry game in Austin that has it's own particular hoo-doo that won't translate to other games.

Honestly though, if I have to pick a loss I would rather lose to UGA and beat A&M. Consequences be damned.

Ok but we aren't making a deal with magical fairies. Losing to Georgia doesn't make it more likely we beat A&M.

Besides the best way to get a close loss to Georgia is to try really hard to beat Georgia.

Ok. We disagree. Big deal. But we could easily get destroyed by Georgia so even if you have decided this doesn't make a shit if we win it still matters a fuck of a lot. Got to play well at least. So even if we lose I disagree it doesn't matter. If we lose it has to be respectable. If we get blown out then all three games have very little significance.
