My interest and viewing of sub-tier bowls has declined in recent years. At an emotional level it feels like there is a more complete disassociation with the top tier bowls, whereas previously there was an appetizer/main course feel to the whole bowl season.

Nothing says college like the StaffDNA Cure Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

You don't get misty college memories when the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl drops?

The SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl doesn't conjure up an autumn campus, cute girls in sweaters and keg parties?

I love the collegiate pride and history associated with this year's Xbox Bowl in venerable college town, Frisco, Texas.

I always walk the campus with my wife and daughters before the Bush's Boca Raton Bowl of Beans.

Didn't Michigan beat the University of Chicago in the first-ever bowl game, the Myrtle Beach Bowl Presented by Engine?

The solution is to make players employees, and make bowl participation part of their enforceable contract. Or instead of giving players trinkets, give them half of the money the school/conference gets from being in it.

I mean, that's the key to all of it, and why it'll never get "fixed." As long as the schools, conferences, and networks refuse to acknowledge that they are a multi-billion dollar industry and that the players generate that wealth, this is what you get. If you acknowledge that they are employees, they can collectively bargain, and contracts and limitations on movement then become enforceable. That's how it works in all other professional sports. You don't get to leave your team if the coach leaves. You don't get to choose your squad or coach when entering the league through the draft and, unless you're a special player that can negotiate a no trade clause, you can't prevent your managers from trading you to wherever they want. These restrains are only possible because the players association agreed to them in the collective bargaining agreement. If schools want to pretend that the players generating billions of dollars are just students participating in friendly athletic competitions like its the late 1800s, there is no legal basis to prevent their freedom of movement and to find ways to make money through their efforts and popularity.

I understand Udoh's situation and never begrudged him for leaving. The thing the academies DO have to counter that is the value of their degree and the leadership experience from fulfilling that service commitment. That had to factor in at least a little bit in the original decision to attend, right? My Old Grad son and I were having this exact discussion during the game, and he suggested players might opt for NIL money and ROTC at the civilian schools. I wanted to throw up and start laughing at the same time. ROTC can get you there too, but if you're already at an academy, it would be a complete change of culture, without the equivalent support of athletic obligations being met "halfway" by the other entities at the civilian institutions. I don't see them leaving for NIL if military leadership is also on their heart.

I think Udoh is staying for his senior season so he should get the chance tomorrow to see significant carries with Raleek Brown heading to the draft. Since Manny Diaz is the head coach he could have a really big game and that would be a good springboard for him heading into next year. We can’t throw the football with Sims so line up and run the triple option against Duke to make the game fun.

I still don't get why Tech isn't in the Cotton Bowl.

Were they trying to protect Ohio State from playing a road game at Miami? Miami was the lower seed and no one goes to their home games anyway. If aggy had won (we are laughing) then the Cotton Bowl would have ended up a road game for Ohio State that way.

but also f jerryworld. That's always a valid answer.

Every year we hear the same shit. Then there's posts about "the solution". The solution to what? Random blowhards bitching about too many bowl games? Or their names? Who fucking cares. Bowl games aren't going away. Go watch the Christmas Story marathon.

Yeah, that game last night was a fun college game. That game had big plays, big hits, players stepping up, and the outcome wasn't certain until the very final play. IDK WTF some of the folks on here are expecting- Cowboys-Niners from the mid-90's???
@PGFrog congrats on TCU's win.

This is the argument that should be used so there are TWO rounds of home games.

I just looked, if I book one week out for a trip from Miami to DFW it was $442 each, and Columbus to DFW was $576 each. Fuck outta here with those prices for a family of 4, and you havent even got a room yet on top of transportation and food.

The Office Thank You GIF

But MUH PRECIOUS BOWL COMMITTEES basically having their own vote on the CFP committee by ensuring they are part of the QF rotation

Top 4 seeds should have a bye AND a home game.

Edited by Js1

Asking fans to travel to potentially 3 straight neutral sites is fucking insane. I’m pretty sure the venues and the “committee” (whoever gets those profits) make their money from local corporations and richers buying up the suites and lower level seats without caring who ends up playing the games. The venues are making their dough and any $50 tickets they can sell to the plebes is just some extra pocket change.

Bert v Josh was a good game too. LOTS of chicken wings got ate by those 2 coaches after.

That and the people who control most of the bowls and need those games to provide content until the interest in basketball season picks up is also the people who control the CFP.

As if Mike Greenberg and other crimes against humanity that are given air time aren't enough, yet another reason to say FUCK THE MOUSE.

Whoever is in charge of marketing for the Pop Tarts bowl didn’t get paid enough. Almost immediately became the most popular non-CFP bowl game, and it’s pretty much the only bowl I hear non-football fans talk about.

I don't know if it was merely a requirement for calling the game or if there were monetary incentives for working pop tarts into almost every play - "He shot through the gap like a pop tart jumping out of a toaster!"

Did they get those letters pressed on at the kiosk in the mall next to the guy selling cell phones and the Orange Julius stand?

It’s not the bowls who aren’t part of the QF won’t get some good teams and matchups. Somebody would have gotten Texas and Michigan and sold out easily. The Rose would have probably murdered their grandmas to get that matchup again, while Indiana is hosting Bama

I don’t know who makes them but they were the official shirts from the Fiesta Bowl given to the players after the game and heavily marketed thereafter. I’m sure there are some folks in the third world still wearing the Stanford version.

The Alamo and the Music City Bowls gave me a little more hope for the survival of bowl games. All four teams seemed to want to be there, played hard (if sloppy), and the winners and fan bases of TCU and IL both seemed genuinely excited to win the games at the end. These can be a nice way to end the season and head into the long offseason with a feeling of optimism, even if that rarely carries over to the next year.

Should have to win minimum 7 games to make a bowl. Reduce bowl games to 26 which is 10 fewer than current amount. That includes 37 total bowl/cpf games.

Why

5 minutes ago, BurntOrange&White said:

Because I don't believe .500 teams or even sub .500 teams when teams opt out should make bowls.

Who cares? It’s more football games. It’s not like these games count for anything.

Most teams lose money or break even on bowl games. Reducing the amount of games and improving the quality of teams in those bowl games will improve ratings thus improve earning potential and conference payouts. When removing those bowls switch to a co-sponsorship method for remaining bowls to increase payouts.

I wish they would spread out the better bowl games instead of waiting until after Christmas. Most of the games before yesterday (other than the CFP first round) were totally uninteresting and I guess what this thread title would consider the "shitty" bowl games. I'm not saying they should be done away with but why not TCU v. USC on Dec. 23 in addition to Western Kentucky v. Southern Miss? Some of today's slate would have been nice before Christmas too. If there's money to be made from the .500 team matchups from the supporters of those schools and casual people tuning in when work is slow that's fine but I would really prefer the better matchups not be so condensed into this week.

Again, who gives a fuck? I don’t give a rat’s ass about conference payouts. It’s more football to watch during a time when work is slow and I’m off a lot of days. Ratings are just fine or else ESPN wouldn’t own a shit ton of these bowl games.

As an example, you are not tuning in to watch a Delaware vs Utah St Dogshit.com Bowl

Bowl games have become scrimmage games for next years starters and those competing for a spot. Nothing wrong with that. The pressures of winning non CFP bowl games have been removed and now they’re solely for fun. I want Texas to win its bowl games but I won’t be disappointed if they don’t. It will be fun watching those that will be here next year.

Maybe. Maybe not, but it does not offend me in any way that the Dogshit.com Bowl is played.

If we don't win today, the reaction on this board will be as even-keeled and reasonable as this post.

I love college football, and have watched several non-playoff bowl games, original post notwithstanding.. but stand by the statement- there have been some horrible games , with teams that really don’t care, playing in half-empty stadiums. I agree with everyone that watched the Alamo Bowl last night, good game by players that gave a shit and wanted to be there. Bonus points to TCU for handing Lincoln Riley another loss.

Y’all have some good solutions, not that anything will change unless ratings drop. I would be all for dropping the bottom 10-12 games, putting the Pop-Tarts crew in charge of the rest, and tying NIL payouts to postseason participation.
