I too haven’t yet read the article due to Christmas chaos, but I will eventually. Some uninformed thoughts: I’m a late genX college professor who got into higher education a bit later than most, so my professor job search and doctoral experience was firmly millennial. 1. Early 2010s at a world-famous doctoral program, one of our professors gave a few lectures about how to get a professor gig. He repeatedly made a point that if you’re part some underrepresented group, make sure to communicate that in your application materials. He cynically said to just send a picture along but made no mention of how to pick the right tree for the picture. At least in his view, it mattered. 2. It took me a few years to find a professor gig. A big part of the problem was the lack of assistant professor openings due to fallout from 2008 and the huge reliance on adjuncts. At the same time, the jobs that were filled were filled by people with objectively weaker CVs. I couldn’t even get an interview. Now a decadish into the professor game I’ll still say, I was better on paper than many of the people getting hired for these jobs. Having served on hiring committees, they simply weren’t better candidates. Maybe there are other reasons, existing relationships for example, but the experience was frustrating and felt unfair. I didn’t turn my angst into a fandom of racist podcasters or whatever kids these days are listening to, but it could’ve happened if not for NPR putting out old episodes of Car Talk. My current gig is a better fit for me and everything worked out for the best, but those years were frustrating.

Hot take: The first time I heard Kernkraft 400 Zombie Nation was when Texas played UCF in their first ever game on their new stadium. We should leave the amplified music to schools like that. We have the Showband of the Southwest and should let them play all the music. Period. Also: "Lil Baby Diaper" is pretty funny "before college football became a huge financial racketeering scheme" is pretty accurate.

Elko spent a decade plus with Dave Clawson and 4 with Jimbo. The only conference championship he's coached in was a win in the 2013 MAC championship. Not much coaching talent is yearning to sign up for that mediocre track record. -

I am convinced that they are at a major major plateau and that its not fixable with more data at this point. They simulate 100x the actual miles driven or something pretty high of a multiple. It's just not improving anymore and I've even experienced some regression in my recent rides. Its also a wonderful example of how bad of how ineffective it is to dump all this money into AI. Could you imagine how many people you could teach to drive on that many million miles in both a simulator and in real cars with all expenses paid and all they had to do was drive? If would be significantly less than the fleet cost and the training cost. There's a fallacy that once they actually get the solve it'll be worth the money, but I don't see it happening in reality.

It’s easy when you think of it like this: sack had a rich granddaddy that left his mom and them off the gravy train (though he got his education paid for and gets to use all the shit that’s in family trusts) and fattie’s mom, a physician, chose to help the needy instead of chasing money, so he grew up around dirty brown kids instead of in river oaks or the park cities. Clearly their grievances are valid -

As someone who is friends with just aa many NFL fans as CFB fans, CFBNerds is 100% correct. The people who argue most for autobids are the ones not watching them. Ari Wasserman is 100% right. Everyone should play by the same rules. Make the top 12, get in. During the mid-major era, a G5 team was in most years, but we just aren't there anymore.

The Texas high school 4 day weekend was stellar as always. The CFP games went the way I had hoped, even if I truly felt JMU wouldn't take down the Ducks. The Packers-Bears game wasn't shabby either. Bonus Tech basketball taking down Duke last night at the Garden. Yes. Great sports weekend.

I have not used one, but some of my Uber drivers had made me wish that I had. I also don't typically speak to them other then hey and thanks, so the lack of interaction is a feature, not a bug for me; when considering the Waymo piece. Why the hesitation on the highway piece? Personally, I would guess from using navi's that the late catch of exits and turns at higher speeds is a possible fault on highway travel for them?

Well, JMU scored the most points of any team on Oregon all season. The majority of those points by JMU were in the second half when Oregon had a 4 TD lead. There is a reason Lanning brought the team back out on the field 5 minutes before the end of the half time break. It's extremely easy for 18-20 something year olds to start "we got this" syndrome and Lanning knew it. I find it interesting that you were critiquing Oregon for being very aggressive in the second half when we (and others) criticize the shit out of Sark for going to conservative and letting teams back in. The 2nd half points by JMU were more a bunch of young men letting "we got this" brain kick in than anything, but JMU made some good adjustments. JMU was top 10 in total D too, for the record. As for Tech, both Tech and Oregon are top 10 total defenses and top 10 offenses. They have one common opponent in Okie State. Oregon beat them 69-3, Tech won 42-0. Oregon got 631 yards and allowed 211. Tech got 370 and allowed 182. This is, IMO, far and away the most interesting game next week. One is an SEC rematch and the other 2 are going to be equal measures beat downs of the G5 schools. Given Lanning and the Oregon players are more experienced in the playoff and I think Lannning a better HC I like Oregon to win, but at the end of the day neither of them is beating Indiana who they will face post.
