  1. You must be new. Let me introduce you to the entire history of politics in America. Over here we've got Oklahoma voters that vote to allow O&G companies to poison their water. Over thataway are Kentucky voters that vote to allow coal companies to dump slurry in their water. etc. Conservatives are people who can never imagine a chemical spill happening in their backyard, despite it happening all the goddamn time, but have very lurid imaginations about brown people coming to kill them and take their stuff, despite that never happening.

  3. My son goes to IMG and is now best friends with Tunmise. I’ll try keep everyone updated, I just want what is best for him because he is the most incredible young man I have ever met. I’m crying right now as I type this just thinking about him. My own son is stupid garbage compared to Tunmise, and I tell him that every time I speak to him.

  4. Bryce and mom had a great time at Jr Day - they very much enjoyed meeting the new OC. Liked him a lot. Bryce was able to talk with Herman more and again visited with the Track program. Everyone assured him that he could continue to throw at UT while playing football. Heidi (mom) is still hoping for College Station, but that does not appear to be his personal preference. He is a huge fan of coach Hand. Oregon, Oklahoma, and LSU also still in mix (LSU recruiting him the hardest), but Texas probably the favorite with his buddies going there and his relationship with Hand. Doubt mom or brother will relent. Saying they don't really care, but you know that they do. That's all I have.

  5. So as we all focus on the events of the day (hour?), I think its easy to lose sight of the slower-moving but monumental shift that is happening beneath all of these political machinations. In 15 years, a scant 4 presidential terms, whites will no longer be the voting majority in the US. Never before in our nations history will that have been true. Ever after it will be. That's a big fucking deal. That is an existential threat if you are the beneficiary of the traditional power structure. You have to secure your position against that monumental change that is looming. You have to do it right fucking now. There is no time for the political pendulum to swing away and back to you before it may *never* swing back to you. You will live in a different fucking world. A world where the odds are not stacked in your favor and where, by all rights, you would have to answer for 250+ years of chicanery and privilege. That is what I think is going on. The hand behind this doomsday conservative movement are the American oligarchs who are facing that reckoning. If they fail to engineer a way to stay in power beyond that tectonic voting population shift, they are kings dying without heirs. Their reign and their lineage is lost forever. They will raze the kingdom before they allow that to happen. The current members of the GOP are simply the visible operational arm of that. Its 4am, I'm fucking high, and nothing else makes as much sense to me as that.

  6. That's a HUGE bingo. Not kidding, I see some sort of obvious Christian logo on a business, I avoid them like the plague -- it's almost always cover for them being ultra-shitty to their customers. Hell, there's an overplayed meme about it:

  7. The Most Pampered Generation was gifted a cheap education. Then they voted to dismantle the system that made their own success possible and compiled wealth from lower taxes due in part to reduced government funding for education. And now have the gall to claim that THEY would be screwed by making college affordable for others? Fuck that. I know there’s a lot of pushback on generalizing by generation, but just look at the policy timeline. Boomers benefited from public investment in education, then supported and benefited from public neglect of education. It’s that kind of myopic, self-serving shit that earned their reputation and has this country mired in Idiocracy.

  8. I don't trust a politician wearing a flag lapel pin the same way I don't trust a business that has overtly religious symbology hanging up over the cash register. Based on my own life experience, both of those are big signs to me that they are out to screw me.

  12. basically everyone is waiting on the mcgahn subpoena, which has been working its way through the courts since april of last year (iirc). however that one gets decided will basically decide all the rest of them. there's nothing that says, should the subpoenas be upheld, that trump couldn't be impeached again. https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/24/politics/mcgahn-impeachment-testimony-house-courts/index.html

  13. while i'm sympathetic to this dude, he's still an ass. my company recently changed its maternity and paternity policy so that both parents can have up to 9 months off with full pay. when i had my kids, i got less than a week of paid paternity leave. now, when weighing whether or not to change this policy, should the company have considered my feelings in the matter, because i might feel like i got screwed (and i definitely did, looking back) out of a proper paternity leave? would the company owe me extra time off years later? of course not. we should never let perfection get in the way of progress. and i say that as someone who, until very recently, was rabidly against free tuition for all. i've changed my mind on the subject, as well as on my opinion on student loan debt. maybe it's because i have two sons approaching teenage years, maybe it's because i work with several young people, and i never internalized the massive burden they've shouldered just to become part of a professional community. i dunno. i always had the thought that it would devalue my degree. i was thinking about it completely backwards. tl;dr: policy should never be based on anecdotes. it's my least favorite part of politics and political speeches.

  16. Yes and no. If they are enforcing it against all boys, then that may make it seem unbiased. BUT, when a policy - even (and especially) when "neutrally" applied - has a strong disparate impact on a minority class, that can be a racist policy. For example, imagine a policy that bans all tattoos, visible or not. Seems neutral. But if the school has several polynesian students who genuinely believe and practice their ancestral faith, tattoos are a part of that. So the policy, while neutral, has a disparate impact on polynesian males. Dreadlocks on a black male may be an iffier proposition (there is likely not a religious component), but it's still a culturally significant/important expression (and it is in his case, being Trinidadian). Of course, then the dirty hippie next door could argue the same thing about his unkempt blond mane. So, it's not always an easy call. But the kid appears to be a good kid, and most importantly, they CHANGED the code on him. He'd complied with the previous version by putting his hair up. They should either go back to that version, or grandfather in a student who grew his hair out under the old code. Short version: dumbass rigid rules lead to dumbass results.

  23. Neither of the last two governors could be labelled as "liberals," you fucking idiot. In spite of them being from the same party in Puerto Rico, the former one was a centrist Democrat who opposes gay marriage and the current one self-identifies as a Republican at the national level. The ideological spectrum you presuppose isn't the same there. Do some research before spouting off your imbecilic prejudices.

  27. This country elected an internet troll as president, and recall how all the usual CR suspects from the old CR were gleeful about having the chance to vote for one. ETA: Today, you'll find the remaining ones mostly hanging out in the meme and comic threads, because they don't actually have anything to say themselves. It's all just a game to cheer for their team, thinking there's no real consequences and everything is a joke. In a normal world these people shouldn't be taken seriously, but they and Trump have turned this one into a cruel cartoon alternative reality.
