And as someone who is vehemently leftist, this is sad to me. Because i believe that good intellectual commerce comes from good compromise. I don't expect everyone to think like i do. In fact, i hope they don't. I want healthy dialog on what it takes to bring society forward. There has to be a balance of ideas. But those ideas have to be rooted in an equal ethos. And we're definitely not there right now. And that's why we're failing right now16 points

Who still thinks internet and smart phones are a luxury? You can’t even deliver pizza for Domino’s without a smart phone. You can’t apply for jobs without the internet. Nor unemployment. And many companies expect their employees to be able to check email or receive texts outside of business hours.13 points

Nobody is pretending it's not happening so drop that completely empty, BS, statement. Nobody needs you to be the grim reaper accountant. Hell, Gov. Cuomo was even more cavalier, " People are going to die, that's just the reality". Curious, you didn't comment on his little emotionless comment..... EDIT: 'I'm just acknowledging their loss".. That's some funny ass shit right there man, and some first class BS.10 points

I love all the stories shitting on all the experts for being so wrong about Florida and Georgia, followed within days by us finding out that Georgia literally just flipped the dates on a chart and Florida firing their data person for not juking the numbers for them. Republicans get out over their skis on shit like that literally every single time.10 points

I’m going to go with: The U.S. could have delayed roughly 36,000 deaths from COVID-19 if broad social distancing measures had been put in place just one week earlier, a new study finds9 points

Florida is firing people for publishing bad looking numbers. I'll wait for an analysis from an actual 3rd party and not an apparatus of the republican party, after we have actual confirmed data out of Florida.9 points

Lol. I'm sure they exist, but man, I've never seen a recruit tweet claiming Fake News and media bias about their fucking HS ranking. Holy shit, this guy couldn't BE a better fit for aTm in every possible way. Fat, Lazy, plummeting bread who blames everyone and everything around them with zero accountability. Motherfucker should change his name to Revelie Vaka and be done with it.8 points

Thanks. the good news is no one on this thread is pretending this isn't happening so your work here is done. I'm sure the CR needs you more right now for your statistical moral support.8 points

I can't believe that not long ago I considered myself a republican leaning independent. I feel like every day these fucks are pushing me further left of center, more out of hatred for them than actual policy preferences.8 points

What if the car's paid off and people are broke NOW? What if they need the internet to look for a job and they'll lose their unemployment benefits if they don't apply to x amount of jobs every month? Why should people have to give up everything they have before they can get government benefits during a financial crisis that the government made worse? You seem like a dickhead.7 points

How many lives saved if more people bothered to adhere to the measures when enacted on 3/15? and why do we as citizens have to wait for the government to tell us what to do? I modified my behavior weeks before the government mandated it.7 points

Hey, I agree learning and changing your position based on new information is important. It's how rational adult brains function. I'm glad you mentioned that. What we've learned overt the course of this pandemic includes: - The virus is spread primarialy through respiratory droplets; - Viral load appears to have at least sone correlation with outcomes; - Masks significantly curb the spread of respiratory droplets. How much depends on material, but generally over 50 percent. That's huge. - The countries that have come out of this relatively well all embrace widespread mask use. Mask use significantly curbs the spread of the virus. That's not a political stance. No one likes it, but it's a small inconvenience for a big time gain. Wearing a mask in crowded or enclosed public spaces isn't political stand, it's being a fucking adult.6 points

I saw this article on the NYTimes yesterday... what a dumbass article that does not accomplish anything. I mean if NYC wasn't a shithole with everyone living on top of each other we could have saved 40K lives too. What's the point?6 points

It sure seems like a lot of folks are taking "not 95-100% effective at protecting the wearer" and interpreting that as "MASKS AREN'T EFFECTIVE." We know that this is transmitted by droplets. And larger droplets carry heavier viral loads, and a heavier viral load is more likely to infect you than a few virus particles. We know that any barrier in front of your face reduces the transmission of larger droplets far away from your face -- N95, surgical mask, even cloth -- all reduce the number and distance of large droplets leaving your mouth. That logically lowers the risk of transmission. No, it's no guarantee. Yes, N95s for everyone would be the most effective. But even a material percentage reduction in transmission can have a significant effect on the total case load. Shit, some of this is just pretty intuitive.6 points

You know what's fascinating here? The 2nd Amendment crowd -- you know the guys, you've seen 'em marching at a capitol building near you -- actually carry signs and rant about the evils of the gov't coming to kick down you door, and the necessity of being armed and using a gun to protect yourself from them. This should be their banner case -- they should be marching on capitols (I mean, they've got the time) protesting this government murder of a lawful firearm user. But they're not. Interesting. I wonder why that is?6 points

When you ask why the companies that got billions in tax breaks used that money for stock buybacks (enriching the wealthiest shareholders - heavily weighted towards insiders) instead of setting aside those funds for operating reserves/emergencies....yeah...fuck the poor.5 points

And those same people are the ones screaming listen to the scientist when the lead scientist of infectious diseases in the US was saying that cruises were safe for healthy people as late as March 9th. It's not exactly easy to social distance on a cruise and also not exactly a call for nationwide social distancing by the scientist.5 points

The entire state of Texas is hot as fuck and uncomfortable for five months a year. A mask isn't even a drop in the bucket. That's a little dramatic and not a real downside. No one's suffering any adverse consequences for throwing on a mask for 30 minutes on a HEB run.5 points

Why is it that all Data, pointed to by Republican Governors as proof of their success, is FAULTY AS HELL? I know the GOP has grown into a party where lies are preferred to Truth but manipulating the data on testing, death and infection is actually deadly. Now the folks actually touting the fake "good news" are going to be perfectly safe, as they get tested 10 times a week. They pretend that those ten tests the Gov took himself are actually 10 people being tested. They pretend the 800 tests taken by 20 people over the last two weeks in a governor's office are actually 800 new tests of individuals, not simply numerous retests of GOP operatives trying to maintain their personal safety, while of course extolling others to risk their lives who can't get testing for free and at will as does every GOP governor and their staff. So the liars are going to win... sort of... Smart people will stay diligent. Stupid people will listen to Fox new, Republican Governor, and most importantly the President. You see the ability to pretend a lie is reality is very deeply engrained in the nearly 45% of the population that now calls themselves Republicans. A lot of Stupid people are going to get sick, and they will hardly notice. And when Aunt JEnny starts to die, they will blame China rather than their own stupidity and stupid behavior. You see in GOP world EVERYTHING is somebody else's fault! Even when the information used for decision making on safety is PURPOSEFULLY ALTERED to support a non-scientific political position. The sad thing is this second wave could have been largely prevented. The lies regarding safety that are going to accelerate the infection rates in states with Republican Governors, could also have been prevented. Perhaps we can endlessly write checks to people and companies that are not producing any revenue until after the Election. Unfortunately we are going to see another terrible fucking handoff by the GOP. It is actually shocking when you see what the results have been in cost of American lives, and cost to the economy caused when the GOP controls the federal government. Guess the mess will again be handed off to a Dem. Then the GOP will again insist on austerity that hurts the country, and the working class. On the hope of... political advantage somewhere down the line if America hurts bad enough.5 points
