The offseason is over and I don't trust @BurntOrange&White's dark and sinister aura with the 2025 fall camp or season. The march begins this week towards the 2025 National Title. I've pasted below Bobby Burton's first look at his view on what big things are up for grabs when practice starts on Wednesday. He really kind of beats around the bush in regard to the team needing to find a 4th WR. He also ignores the kicking game altogether which seems like something we want to see fixed in a major way. ***** Let’s keep today’s column relatively simple and straight-forward. What are the primary position battles and questions expected during fall camp? - Back-up QB. Matthew Caldwell or Trey Owens? Word is, Caldwell very much looks the part But let’s see if Owens is prepared to defend the spot. - RB rotation and the timing of it. Trey Wisner is obviously going to play a lot. The questions are the health and timing of Ced Baxter, and the ability of Jerrick Gibson, Christian Clark and James Simon. Baxter is thought to be “ahead” in his recovery, but just how far exactly? Gibson has worked hard this off-season to re-shape his body. We’ll see if that helps his quickness. Clark looked really good in spots, too. Simon is the freshman worth watching. One key on these back-ups: which one is the best in pass protection? - WR depth. After DeAndre Moore, Ryan Wingo, Emmett Mosley and Parker Livingstone, we need to see if any of the talented freshman make a move during camp. Texas would love another freshman to join Daylan McCutcheon as being highly reliable (and not just talented). - TE. Though he may not be there on day one of practice because he is a transfer, we can pencil Jack Endries in as the starter. But who will be the back-up and what will the rotation be? Is Spencer Shannon the sole in-line option? - Right tackle and the overall influence of Nick Brooks and possibly Nate Kibble. Brooks might get reps at right tackle to push Brandon Baker and Andre Cojoe. Brooks might also be so good they force feed him into the lineup at left guard. Kibble has not received the same fanfare but he could be a guy who makes things happen for himself during camp. - Interior DL. We already got a taste of Cole Brevard and Hero Kanu in the spring. What is the rotation and what is the value of Travis Shaw, Maraad Watson and Levon Johnson? - Linebacker. Lots of options here. How will Texas deploy them? The development of Trey Moore as an off-ball linebacker will be intriguing, as is the usage of Brad Spence. - The Secondary. Good luck figuring this out before camp starts. Texas legitimately has eight players who could fill five starting spots: Manny Muhammad - starting corner Jaylon Guilbeau - corner or nickel Michael Taaffe - starting safety Jelani McDonald - safety or big nickel Derrick Williams - safety Kobe Black - possible starting corner Wardell Mack - possible starting nickel Warren Roberson - possible starting corner The list doesn’t include three freshman that people are speaking highly of in Jonah Williams, Graceson Littleton and Kade Phillips. In other words, there’s a lot of vetting left to do in the secondary. And that begins in training camp, starting Wednesday, just three days from today. OTF will be there.17 points

Also, on Kreul, the Sooners Illustrated gurus are now telling their audience that it feels like Texas is making a push for Kreul and, all things equal, it looks like he'd prefer Texas. Take that FWIW, as I do not think they have decent connections to the Texas side. Their providing that update based on what the Kreul camp is saying and what their OU staff connections are now whining about to them.16 points

From former coworker and OU fan: “Here is my culmination of notes from Jim Nagy. Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman introduced Jim Nagy as he took a seat to a loud ovation from the crowd. Nagy spoke to the crowd for over an hour. He also personally spoke to several crowd members after the event (including me). Nagy confirmed a lot of what TFB has already been reporting, but he also gave a few interesting tidbits as well. I took notes and found the following things very interesting. – Nagy thanked his staff that works under him and explained what he oversees (basically everything within the football program). Some of his staff was highly coveted. – He mentioned that the setup with a GM, an evaluation staff, etc that OU is using mimics NFL organizations. He said OU is the ONLY university running this type of set up in CFB. He said it makes sense, considering players will be paid and there’s no getting around it. He did say he never planned on working for a college, but if he did, there was a short list of perennial powerhouse universities that he would have even considered. OU was one of them. – Nagy said his goal is to get OU national championships. – He explained the role of his staff. He said they are responsible for searching, finding, evaluating, and recruiting high school and portal players. He did mention he has had to adjust to watching high school tape as opposed to NFL prospects tape. – As TFB mentioned, he said his staff is strictly forbidden from using national recruiting services to find or evaluate players. He said they put in their own work with evaluations and use a uniform grading system, and they do not care or even know what star rating the players have (until later in the process, which I’ll hit on). He reiterated that everyone has to use this grading system and that it has been tested in the NFL and it works. He’s very confident with this evaluation process. – Nagy joked and said an unnamed position coach came up to him with a national recruiting service top 25 players for his position to try and help his staff out. He laughed and basically told the coach he didn’t need the list. – Nagy mentioned that the coaches were wasting time watching hours upon hours of film for recruits. He said they can now focus solely on COACHING. He said the film watching will be done by his staff and the players will be graded. He said coaches should coach, and this system takes a load off of the coaches. – Once the players are graded independently, he mentioned that his staff members need to all agree on the grading range. They present these players to the coaches, and the coaches can ask questions or review the player further. He said if the coach has any concerns, everyone (coaches and his staff) meets and they must be on board before moving forward with the recruit. He said if the coaches aren’t fully on board, the player will not be recruited because his staff will not force any players onto the coaching staff who they don’t buy into fully. – Nagy mentioned that they are working on the 2026 recruiting class right now. He mentioned how several recruits were asking for so much money that it was more than any current player on the roster is making. Nagy said he will not upset the culture and program by overpaying a player in this way. He said this 2026 group understands this was the last hurrah with non-capped money and tried to take advantage of it. – He said each staff member has a huge board or type of layout. It details each recruit’s life basically and instructs the staff member when they need to call, text, or check in with a recruit based on their individual needs. – He mentioned that this new generation of players tells everyone how much money they are making, and they compare it with each other, so it’s very important to not upset the culture. – On that same note he said he really loves the culture BV has built, and they are all family. He said he personally tries to connect with each recruit and their families. He said some recruits were on campus for an official visit and he had first met them on this visit since he was only recently hired. He said he wants the recruits to not only be able to reach out to the coaches if they have issues or concerns, but also to his staff. He wants the recruits and their families to feel comfortable with everything about OU. – Also as TFB has reported, Nagy mentioned that a few schools restructured and front loaded their players pay so they have more money now for 26 recruits with this revenue sharing. He said those schools will have more money to work with this go around, but assured the crowd that OU will still compete with them in recruiting, and he hinted that OU will be in a similar situation as these schools for the 2027 class. – He jokingly mentioned how an unnamed recruit jumped up in the rankings when he committed to OU as he spoke of national recruiting services. – He mentioned that Revenue sharing is what the players are getting and the biggest issue (not NIL). He said revenue sharing with the cap is the future of college football and all teams will work with the process. – He mentioned that OU will flip some recruits in the fall and he truly believes this season will be very successful. He hinted that they are recruiting some committed players now. – Nagy said that once a recruit is more or less serious about coming to OU, a price range is determined. He said that at that time, the player leverages their pay by using the national star ranking system. So he said, even though his staff doesn’t care if a guy is a consensus 4 or 5 star during evaluations, they are fair and understand that the player will and should be compensated appropriately if he is a 4 or 5 star recruit by the recruiting services. – He mentioned the biggest positive about his own staff using a trusted grading system and evaluating their own prospects is, it can allow the revenue money to be used more efficiently. He specifically said if they evaluate and grade a 5-star and a 3-star recruit the same (he said if both recruits grade out as a starter or all-conference potential for example)….why pay a massive amount more for the 5-star when his grade is the same as the 3-star? He went on to say that’s how much he trusts his grading system. He said OU won’t compete with ”Miami or Texas A&M ” for a listed 5-star when OU values the 3-star just as much (or more in some cases) at the same position. He said OU would rather go get the 3-star player because he thinks OU will get the same quality of player for a better bargain. – Nagy said he holds his staff accountable. He reiterated the fact that he will find good players for the coaches and he takes all responsibility if a player doesn’t work out. He told the coaches don’t worry about recruits and stars, he’s gonna get them the players they need.” These fucking guys…15 points

I’m a 52-year-old guy from the border and I thave no idea how the hand I was dealt could work out like this. Not sure why I am posting this other than to say I’m the luckiest sumbitch. Just hugged my wife and told her the same as best I could. Had a great dinner grilled over charcoal while floating in my pool and drinking beer and margaritas with a hot wife and texting my kids who are all doing great all over the US. No one’s sick: no one’s too stressed. Everyone can’t want to get together next time at a football game. Chicken was good tonight. Beans were perfect. Beer was cold. Wife squeezed my junk when we hugged and I told her that I loved her. Charlie Robison is playing on the JBL speaker. How did I get here? How do I stay here?10 points

The only real worry I have for this season is the offensive line. Last year was a more talented and experienced group. They had 121 combined starts going into the year. Yet with all that, they rushed for 58, 31, and 29 yards against Ohio State and Georgia. Now we go into a season with 45 combined starts and several guys who failed to push for playing time previously. It's the only thing that gives me pause about all the hype.9 points

That is certainly one very possible result. But then I remember that it was common for ‘sundown towns’ to exist, for kids to work 16 hour days in factories without any thought to safety. When my grandparents were alive, there was no minimum wage, so it was a routine for companies to pay people almost nothing- while requiring employees to rent their shacks and shop at their company store - turning employees into virtual serfs and hiring private goon armies to break unions - all while the employers were protected by the bullshit known as “freedom of contract”. I remember American history and seeing that the klan was so strong in the 1920s nationwide that it controlled politics in many states - and was supported by Americans to the point it felt comfortable conducting huge parades down Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House. The widely supported Mccarthy hearings that destroyed the lives of many innocent people by innuendo, abandoned by friends, who knew they were innocent, with their employers bowing to fear and pressure and black listing them, truth and the rule of law seemingly no longer mattering in the face of false patriotism that, like today, wipes its ass on the constitutional liberties supposed to protect everyone. I am not holding out false hope at all. But being a student of history, I am not going to completely ignore the other times in American history when things looked so bad that most agreed it was the sign of the end of the country. Citizens and their government were so heartless, stupid, and cruel that it was the only result possible…but it wasn’t.9 points

The AZ series was fun, but it was fools gold. We've got a rotation with just 2 legit MLB-caliber starters and a lineup that routinely has more spots occupied by AAA dreck than MLB regulars. A spare tire should ideally only be on you car long enough to get to a tire shop. You shouldn't be driving around with 2 regular tires and 2 donuts for several months. Hummel starts several games a week and is arguably the worst-hitting OF to ever don an Astros jersey. He and Chas have made a combined 170 plate appearances and produced 7 RBI, accounting for -1.5 WAR. Neither should be anywhere close to an MLB roster in the Year of Our Lord 2025, much less taking 7-8 ABs a night on a team with its sights on the playoffs. There's not really any feasible scenario where this team is fixable via trade in the next few days. In some alternate fantasy world where Jake and Paredes never get hurt, Yordan comes back mid-Summer and is starting to heat up, and Pena's return is imminent, sure, go out and grab an OF and an SP and try to make a run. That ain't reality. We have probably 5 or 6 spots on the 25-man roster spots that need to be replaced, not 1 or 2.6 points
