The Guitar Pron Thread

I’ve kind of been working at it under the heading of “crazy ass goals to work on that may never come to fruition but if they do it would be kind of cool”. The idea of making a few bucks here and there sitting in the corner of a bar playing tunes I like sounds appealing as a pseudo retirement plan. Plus, I live in Phoenix so you don’t have to be all that good to get gigs, not at all like Austin. Crowds here are generally just happy to have someone play. I’ve seen some dudes getting paid here who really aren’t that good.

That said it would be nice not to suck. I actually took some voice lessons this summer when I had some free time from a really good voice coach. Amazing the difference it made and easily the most awkward thing I’ve ever done, nothing else is even close. Big help in getting over the anxiety.

JJ I’m much less worried about band mates fucking up than I am band mates who don’t or can’t make the required commitment. We all have pretty full schedules these days. I can control 100% of the commitment required in a solo bit. Plus the song list isn’t a democracy.

Who knows, we’ll see I guess.

It’s been my observation living in the Atlanta burbs that you really don’t have to be that good to get those gigs. And if you find the ones like a brewery on a Friday night then no one is paying attention anyway.

I’ve thought of doing what you’re talking about but I’m too chicken.

Yea I want to be background noise. Not with a crowd staring at me.

That said I was right there with you on the chicken thing. Taking voice lessons got me (somewhat) over that. I think I said before that was easily the most awkward thing I’ve ever done. But it’s just a wall that i decided one day I was going to charge through and stop being a vag about. You should do it.

Im a terrible singer, but if you want to getnover that wall/fear, go do Karaoke for a while. I used to be terrified of singig in front of people because my of my voice. Finally I did karaoke until all my fucks were gone. Sometimes im not half bad, other times its so bad i should be embarrassed - but i don't really give a shit. Its a fucking song and Im not trying to make it my day job.

I'm going to Spain for my honeymoon.  Fiancee is talking about how I should buy a guitar over there.  I feel like this may be the last time she's in support of such a thing, although a flamenco or classical wouldn't be at the top of my list of guitars to buy at the moment (man that G&L up there..).  What do y'all know about spanish guitars?

The really good ones are really expensive, just like a Martin here.  I was in Spain a couple years ago and contemplated the same thing, but then I thought better of it as you can get most of them here.  Of course, that doesn't have the same thrill as buying it in Spain, but we were traveling with Chad Jr. and I didn't need one more thing that needed my attention.

Let me know how it goes.  I have a soft spot for Spain, having lived there for about six months while misspending my youth.

This is how it starts. Don’t let yourself go down that road.

I guess I may be lucky in that Mrs tbone has never said anything other than “well, I guess it could have been worse” when I told her how much I spent on a guitar. I suppose I could play the full disclosure card since I had a Marshall 1/2 stack in my living room the first time she ever came to my house but it’s never been an issue.

I've been messing around with the "create a body" at Warmouth over the past couple days and roasted ash with a transparent color finish awesome. And you can actually select your block of wood for some extra coin. This one is money.

That is beautiful.

What's the accepted average waiting period between visits to Guitar Center so that they actually have something different from the last time you went?

When I worked there back in 2001 we only put a new one out when an old one sold. They’ve been bought out since then so maybe it’s different now.

Is this one missing the pickguard? I haven't seen another one of these without a guard.

If you're not in a hurry, you should be able to find another one in the $1500 range in better condition. Just keep an eye on Ebay and Reverb.

Found a 2013. 1425 OBO May thow out about $1100 and see if it happens. Also he said there wasn’t a pick guard on it when he bought it. I’d want one with it on it

I have a nephew ~6 interested in guitar.  He's never touched one that I know of, but according to his Mom his eyes lit up in Wal-Fart when he spotted one.

He didn't want to put it down.

Any recs on a quality instrument for a little boy?  This would be for Christmas morning.  Thanks!!

Thanks, man!  I had that in my cart and needed validation.  I ordered cables as well.  I am so excited!!  If it works out, I'll post pics with babies and guitars.

Have a buddy that bought one. I really like it. I had a standard Casino, that I sold because I never got along with it. Much like my 339, the smaller body makes it much more comfortable.

Plus, P90's.

I have considered the Epi 339 after picking around on one in a store. It is definitely more comfortable. How does the sound compare through an amp?

It sounds great. I have the P90 version and those Epi P90 Pros are FANTASTIC. Ring like a bell when turned down and clean. Dirty in a great way, when cranked. Paid less than 300 new. Possibly the best sounding guitar I own.

Funny, those same pups in one of my LP's just don't have the same mojo. I think the semi-hollow makes all the difference.

I've been reading about different Strat series, Special Runs (FSRs), vendor exclusives, and such. Stumbled across this totally 80's hot mess. The red, white, and black ones are pretty lazy. "Morocco Red?" Bitch, please. Fender just took all the leftover buckets of red paint they had lying around from the 50's and 60's and mixed that shit all together.
