Checking In.  It's officially 6 months of sobriety today.  Finally starting to feel like a million bucks.

I'd have a celebratory steak or something but I've run into food tolerance issues of late.

On the plus side, I did a bunch of bloodwork and all my levels are normalizing and my cholesterol has dropped through the floor.  It's nice to see some quantitative evidence of how sobriety helps.

Glenn.

That's great.

I'm glad you bumped the thread, too.  I was going to bump it last week to get it back on page 1.  This thread was quite important in my decision to stop drinking and there are others that probably could use it.

Same here.

Actually putting my thoughts about quitting into a message for a bunch of strangers on the internet to read was oddly freeing and honestly step 1.  In the same breath, those strangers also helped me realize I wasn't alone.

Thanks assholes!

I'm certainly going to be monitoring it closer.  It's about time.

I started drinking again 10 days ago.  Fucking chronic pain.  Was struggling and pretty damned desperate.  When I posted about ending up in the ER due to a combination of sleeping pills and mucho whiskey, both @BearSchlong and @pch said I could message them if I needed help….and I needed help.  Theirs was not an idle offer. Within a day, I’d established a separate relationship with each of these gentlemen.  They shared their experiences, made some absolutely brilliant suggestions to help me get on the path to sobriety, and followed up to check on my progress.  In the middle of this, my wife (who thought I had quit drinking) found my bottle of whiskey.  Instead of kicking me to the curb, which I deserved, she said, “What do we need to do to fix this?”.  I sweater gawd, I won the wife lottery.  My wife knows I’ve reached out to people on Surly and she’s all for it.  If you’re in a bad place because of your alcohol consumption, there are people on this thread who can help you and >want< to help you.  I thought I could beat this by myself and I was wrong.  But, I/WE will beat this!  Now, I’m 5 days sober.  It’s a start.

Today, I’ve been sober for one year.  Everything in my life is better and I’m surprised at how much I don’t miss it.  I’m at peace and life is good.

It works if you work it.  Early in my journey towards sober living, a member at my home group who I respected highly told me the following: "Len, the good news is you don't ever have to take another drink-the bad news is, drinking is not your problem!"  After 27 years without a drink, that statement rings more true than ever in my life. The spiritual kindergarten is my home for whatever issues I think I might have, and there are no shortage of teachers who have helpful suggestions for those issues.

Congratulations to you on your one year-the best is yet to come.
