WNBA players do not deserve the pay that they think they deserve but they absolutely deserve a pay raise once the new media contract starts.  They want 50% of revenue like NBA players get but that is just not doable.  There is a minimum amount needed to run the league and that amount will eat up much more of WNBA revenue that it does NBA revenue just because of how big that revenue pool is.  Without having the financials in front of me which makes my opinion rather worthless I still feel like their pay should triple or 4x.  That is still only $4.5-6 million in salary but should be doable with the new media rights.

I've never seen a W player or union rep say they want 50%.   Just that they deserve more than 9.5% that they currently get.

During her recent appearance on the "All the Smoke" podcast with Matt Barnes, WNBA union first vice president Kelsey Plum explained that the union is not asking for the same salaries as NBA players. What is demanded is the same percentage of the pie as the men.

"A lot of times, the misinformation comes in where we're asking to be paid what the men are being paid. That's not true. We're asking just the same percentage of revenue or a similar percentage of revenue. And right now, that's not the case. And so that's what we're fighting for," explained Plum

Thanks.   That's not a good idea but at least I am hoping its a negotiating tactic not a hard requirement.   They're not getting that much.   Between 25 and 35% would be my guess.

https://sports.yahoo.com/article/washington-mystics-trade-brittney-sykes-194604210.html

The Seattle Storm have acquired 2025 WNBA All-Star guard Brittney Sykes in a trade with the Washington Mystics.

In exchange for Sykes, the Mystics receive veteran forward Alysha Clark, the Storm’s 2026 first-round pick, and third-year player Zia Cooke. Washington is waiving third-year forward Sika Koné to complete the transaction and waiving Cooke in a corresponding move.

Mystics giving up on the season and going all in with the young guns they have in Citron and Iriafin.    They had a really nice run and were the surprise of the league.   Meanwhile, the contenders are loading up!   MIN getting Dijonai the other day and now SEA getting another all-star to go with the 3 they already have in Diggins, Ogwumike, and Gabby Williams.   Add in Magbedor and the rookie Malonga and they are looking pretty stacked.

I feel badly for Alysha Clark who went back to SEA as a FA.   She won two titles there back in 2018 and 2020.   She's the oldest player in the league at 38.  I know she didnt want to be on a team that wasnt competing in what could be her last yr.

MIN and SEA actually play tonight too.

Moving to a big market that loves basketball is definitely a huge move and it isn't like you're going to lose a lot of fans.  Boston is an easy trip from Connecticut and a huge chunk of their fan base is probably already Boston-centric.

Can more like 5 people on the street even tell you where Uncasville is?  The Connecticut Sun literally exist because of Mohegan Sun and UConn/Geno. \

Also, as a fan of sports who hates the gambling bullshit, pulling a franchise out of/away from a casino is a good move.

The commute for fans is an easy one. People sometimes forget that the New England states are small and things are not that far apart. You can drive from New York to Boston in 3.5 hours or so.

I have gambled, but one thing that does bother me is the inability now to talk about sports without the money someone has on a game. I also find it to be a good idea to get this team away from a gambling-fueled area. Boston is a really cool city with a rich history and love for basketball. I may be a fan of the Purple and Gold, BUT I can respect a city that cares about the game. Putting them there will be a good move for league revenue. It just won't be a good one for owners who wanted an expansion team there instead so they could collect millions in league expansion fees. I'll cry one tear for them.

Yep.  That's the big one - it's super fucking easy to get from Connecticut to Boston.  You can take a car or mass transit.

Connecticut is such a small state that most of the Suns' natural fanbase is probably already centered in Boston.  There's a reason UConn is playing BYU in Boston this season - it's naturally where most of their alumni probably are (besides NY) due to proximity.  And even Suns fans who may live in NYC can get to Boston easily.

I totally understand why the league put the Suns in Connecticut to start back in 2003 after moving from Orlando - UConn was on the rise as a power in WBB, having won titles under Geno in 1995, 2000, 2002 and would go on to win in 2003 and 2004.  Very similar to LOVB putting teams in Austin, Madison and Lincoln - big volleyball fan bases via college.  Same with the likelihood that AUSL, once they decide where to put their teams, will probably put one in OKC and one in Alabama.

The league has blown up in popularity though, so you don't have to keep the Suns in Uncasville, when Boston is 100 miles away - bigger market wins the day.

Does not sound like Suns to Boston is a done deal. Houston and Tillman may make a play for them as well after being left out of the initial expansion plans

As someone who has a young daughter (11) who follows the WNBA, this isn't funny. Even if she doesn't see in games, I'm sure we’re close to seeing it being discussed on social media if we aren't there yet. The level of media that is promoting like Barstool is pretty disappointing. Grow up, assholes.

Keep your 11 year old off social media, especially Barstool.

She's not there, but my 15 year old is online some.  These things filter down. They eventually make it to stuff like youtube shorts.

The people that are throwing dildos on the floor at WNBA games are complete losers. Dont give them any air.

Uh yeah, your 11 year old shouldn’t be browsing Xitter or Barstool

You must not have kids or know how this stuff works its way downstream.

Personally I’d love to watch Sophie Cunningham get hit by a dildo over and over and over and over again until she explodes.  But it’s stupid to throw it at players in a game.

It’s not the internet’s job to make their content only age appropriate for 11 year olds

I can tell by the facile nature of your comments that you have no children.

I'm not asking the internet to police it. I'm explaining that it makes it way down to kids that aren't on social media but are just watching unrelated basketball videos or accounts.

Do you think it’s funny that people are throwing dildos on a women’s basketball court?

Is it too much to ask for one of the players to slip and fall on a dildo like a prat fall, but not get injured?  From not seeing it is ok, but trying to kick it off the court would be even better.
like the end of “it’s a mad mad mad mad world”

Setting aside the minimal physical danger of being hit by a thrown piece of rubber/silicone, yes, I think it is hilarious.

I also find the Streisand effect response of the players and league to be high comedy.

I also find the usual response of the American Prude to be hysterically comical.

All in all, this meaningless molehill has brought loads of humor in the dog days of summer as we all await fall sports. You can also get off your parental high horse. Your children are your responsibility and none of us are obligated to consider their age or maturity level. That is your job. If you avoid having uncomfortable conversations about sex and sexual politics with your daughters throughout their childhood, then you are not doing your job. Teach your children to be well-adjusted adults, not sheltered snowflakes that wilt at the thought of a dildo.

I have two daughters that watch a lot of WNBA now. I can assure you that sex toys weren’t on the list of topics we discussed at 15 and 11. Throwing dildos on the floor of a women’s basketball game isn’t humorous. What it’s turning into online isn’t humorous. It’s not something that a lot of parents of teen and preteen girls expected to have to be talking about when watching a basketball game.

Wanna know why there aren't comedy movies any more?

People can't laugh and move the fuck on.

ET, a movie generally accepted as a "kid's show" has the line, "Shut up penis breath!" in it.  Ohhh the horror!!!

That’s a terrible comparison. Throwing anything on the floor, field, pitch, whatever else there is, isn’t funny. You want comedy and sports, go to a Savannah Bananas game.

On that front, I agree.  Should be auto eject and lifetime ban for fan(s.)

But the focal point has been what the object actually is and how it mortifies 11 year old girls.

The first time people did laugh and moved on. Then it kept happening and is sexist af and harassing. The people doing it are the ones who need to move the fuck on. Hopefully they have and we can move on to the next dumb thing.

Are you seriously comparing fans doing the wave in the stands to fans throwing dildos and female players on the court during play? Is that for real what you’re trying to say?
