Those of you who want to do some long-form reading on stuff, this site publishes a bunch:

https://twitter.com/14ymedio

Depending on your browser, you should be able to have it translated into English on the spot, without you having to copy-and-paste anything.  Lots of history and lots of voices both in and out of Cuba.

Regrettably it feels like this story is already out of the news cycle.

Imagine that.

”News” cycle would be more accurately reimagined as. Propaganda Cycle.

amirite?

Nothing mentioned on current NYT front page

Not a single mention of Cuba on the current front page of the Washington Post

Is there anything actually happening right now that should be big news but isn't? Not what happened a week ago or what you wish was happening, but actual real events that are happening.

I think the idea that the corporate news media is trying to squash the story is silly because it worked very hard to make a handful of scattered, not-very-large protests look like the beginning of a popular revolution. The protests stopped so... what are they supposed to be reporting?

I will look through the Cuban stuff I've been following on social media later, but I got the impression they were kind of chilling out and planning something for the 26th, because it's incredibly symbolic to the Cuban leadership.  Keep in mind that nothing much has changed for most of them - the Cuban leadership increased the amount of food/medicine that travelers could bring into the country, but I doubt they are going to make any kind of dent.

July 26th is supposedly one of the most important dates in the Cuban revolution - marked an attack by Fidel and his followers on some Army facilities, and also Fidel named his early movement the 26th of July movement.

Attack on Moncada Barracks. it failed but was turned into something like a rally cry.

Stopping your movement for 2 weeks to wait for a symbolic date doesn't sound like it's a real thing.

Yeah it does if you want to sustain it. One thing is impromptu marches in the streets, but for massive mobilization there are plenty of examples of preparation, especially for symbolic dates. Just look at how Syria started. First it was just walking and screaming, then became organized. Of course for both events Assad and company gave zero fucks about what the world thinks. Same thing is going on in Burma. They did not stop to organize and now are trying to, but from a position of ah shit.......

Doing something large on the 26th is a massive fuck you to the Cuban government and could become a new rallying cry. Not saying it is going to work, but it is not an oddity.

Lies of omission are the oxygen of the purposefully obtuse.
The MSM excells in that endeavor.
Anyone pretending the NYT is a legit news source is a clown.

I googled Cuba and New York Times and found more than 6 articles opinions pieces about the protests. So…..

It is because they don’t want to report what the Cuban government is doing to those they hold accountable for the uprising.

if y'all actually want to learn about goings on rather than rub your totally not political grievance boners y'all should probably try the miami herald, it's basically the english paper of record for the northern part of latin america, but y'all be y'all.  reuters picked up the story and i suspect most major outlets will have it tomorrow.

Sorry that you don't understand how Google works. The ONLY articles about Cuba in the NY times in the last 3 days have been about "Covid". Prove me wrong.

“The fact that they are charging people with public disorder shows they were just peaceful protesters and did not commit any crimes,” Lobón said in a phone interview.

She said public-disorder charges are frequently used against dissidents and activists like her that participate in public demonstrations against the government. She was one of the young artists arrested after a protest in front of the Ministry of Culture last year. She says that police and state security officers have prevented her from leaving her house for the past 29 days.

“So far, there are 537 documented detentions. They could not all be involved in ‘acts of vandalism,’ “ she said, in reference to the version peddled by the Cuban government.

Well I claimed nothing of the sort. Only that the word Cuba is nowhere to be found amongst the 80+ stories on the NYT/Wash Post online front page. Nor anywhere on the Google news top stories.

Im fairly certain if I Google “Cuba” and a newspaper I will always find 6 results or so.

Are these major papers supposed to just write daily opinion pieces when there isn't any real news of major importance?

News:

 • Biden administration will sanction Cuba for the government's crack-down on peaceful protests.
 • Miami boat flotilla will go on (flotilla boats have been warned by the Coast Guard to stay out of Cuban territorial waters).
 • As mentioned earlier, Miami news understand the dynamics.  Miami news outlets have covered this story for decades.

The first bullet point is hilariously ironic. The flotilla is a few boats that will go 15 miles away from Cuba and shoot fireworks. There is nothing newsworthy about that except maybe for local papers like the Miami Herald. It is being asserted here that national news is keeping the story down and I'm simply asking what actual newsworthy events are happening.

Are people here upset that major national papers/outlets aren't publishing op-eds every single day?

"WHY ISN'T THE NATIONAL MEDIA WARMONGERING THE WAY I WANT THEM TO!?!?!"

There is the possibility of a Government that is 90 miles from our shore being overthrown. You don't believe that's newsworthy?

But this "news" is on the frontpage of NYTimes.com:

From the Department of State today. More sanctions.

Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State

Starting on July 11, tens of thousands of Cubans in dozens of cities and towns throughout their country took to the streets to peacefully demand respect for their fundamental freedoms and a better future. In response, the Cuban regime violently repressed the protests, arresting hundreds of demonstrators simply for exercising their human rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The actions of Cuban security forces and violent mobs mobilized by Cuban Communist Party First Secretary Miguel Diaz-Canel lay bare the regime’s fear of its own people and unwillingness to meet their basic needs and aspirations.

Today, the United States is imposing sanctions on Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba Álvaro López Miera and the Cuban Ministry of the Interior’s Special National Brigade or “Boinas Negras” (Black Berets). López Miera and the Special National Brigade have been involved in suppressing the protests, including through physical violence and intimidation. We take this action pursuant to Executive Order 13818, which builds upon and implements the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

We stand with every Cuban seeking a government that respects the human rights and dignity of the Cuban people. We will continue to take action to promote accountability for the Cuban government’s human rights abuses, including through additional sanctions pursuant to Global Magnitsky, as appropriate.

So the "news" story would be about a possibility of something happening?

Serious question: What was the last major newsworthy event in Cuba that would actually indicate a strong possibility an overthrow in the minds of people who are not politically/ideologically desirous of such an outcome?

That you guys are just calling for the national "news" media to be cheerleaders for nation-building and regime change gives the game away.

Just now, atomheartbevo said:

You don't know many Cuban-Americans with boats, do you?

No idea. Cool let's say there will be 5,000 boats shooting fireworks 15 miles away from Cuba... I still don't see why that would be national news. Local news, absolutely.

The fact that civilians were openly fighting with the police and soldiers in large numbers all across Cuba and were in some cases rescuing other protestors from said police and soldiers, were driving those police and soldiers from some neighborhoods, was a huge fucking deal.  The police and soldiers are The State.

That's not happened on that scale before.

Armybrat is old enough to remember when the new york times started a war with spain over whether cuba could govern itself independently (episode #49 of hardcore history, the american peril, for those born in the 20th and 21st centuries).

But what page was it on, and which font?

"Were"

It was being covered heavily while it was happening. Should newspapers run "Oh hey remember when..." retrospectives?

Also, "in large numbers" is subjective and, let's say, hopeful.

And they are going to try something new with the 26th thing and getting more organized, and they are seeing how the Cuban government handles the detained.

There's a lot of noise that the Cuban government may go extremely easy on the detained, in the hopes it deflates the movement.  The movement doesn't have a central rallying figure, which is the one thing the Cuban government has going for it.  If they start tossing out 20 and 30 year sentences like originally floated, they will be creating martyrs and figures to rally around.
