Probably a Sam Ehlinger colts preseason joke.

Apparently he’s killing it in Broncos camp right now too. Sark would have gotten him drafted in the first two rounds smh.

Sam is actually a good QB - he will be fine for a while on rosters.

Agreed, it would have just been cool to see him drafted by a team who actually needed him to play year 1 (or any year for that matter)

It’s reality.

What should he have done that he didn't?

Big 12 title.

SEC runner up.

2 NC Semi finals.

What I will say is he performed and could have achieved more if healthy. He didn't underperform.

So, another very good college QB.  Good talk.

We can all wish he is the modern. Chance mock played a little bit but it was really Simms -> Vince so id take that. Lol

He did well enough to earn his draft spot.

Just because he was better than QBs during that time frame and our teams were infinitely less talented doesn’t mean it was because of him. Quinn was an above average to good QB for us, nothing more nothing less. He didn’t elevate the team

Maalik Murphy was 2-0 that season including beating Kansas St.

Texas fans, where QB controversy isn't just the norm, they never end. This thread truly amuses me, QB controversy over players who haven't been here in decades. Awesome sauce.

Thompson and Card absolutely do not replicate the win percentage

I’ll clarify that statement.  In the past 3 years with Quinn as the starter, his replacements when called upon to start have replicated his win percentage.  Two of those three (not including Manning of course) could not do that at their other programs even with the additional maturity.

And , if I’m not mistaken, the one loss was a game on the road, in which our best player fumbled the ball in OT.  A game in which we scored as many points as any loss in the past 3 years.

Its time to move on from the occasional bitching on the baseball board back to the football board.

Quinn was contributor to Texas's success the last 3 years. He was not the main reason. The NFL draft was evidence of that. Maalik never lost at Texas, because he was surrounded by NFL talent. He lost at Duke, because he was surrounded by mediocre talent. QB is the only position on the field that people pretend team success is a barometer for individual play. The defense led Texas to the playoffs the last 2 years, but nobody is going to say Sorrell is a legend based on that

He didn't lose much at Duke.

When you look at the chart above, the Texas defense gave up fewer points in FOURTEEN  (14) games, than EIGHT of the Big 12 teams gave up in NINE (9) games. I presume that is relatively acceptable.

Going 9-3 at Duke while beating UNC, NC State, VaTech and FSU is a losing season in your estimation?

I didnt say a losing record. I said he was undefeated at Texas because he was surrounded by NFL talent. He lost (games) at Duke, because he was surrounded by mediocre talent. The point was people need to stop using simple records as a barometer for QB play. Just because a team wins at a high level, it does not mean the QB played at a high level.

By the way, we could make the same argument for Maalik. The Duke offense finished #96 in FEI and the defense #30. The Duke coaches seem to have understood my statement.

If a QB gets a winning record at Duke, they did their job. Maalik is not a future NFL QB, and they did bring in someone better, but to say "He lost at Duke" is wrong in every way.

I've said it multiple times on this thread, Ewers was an outstanding QB when he was healthy. Unfortunately, I don't think he ever was ever completely healthy after getting planted by Dallas Turner at DKR. If he was, I think that hit was in the back of his mind the entire time he played at Texas. That's the biggest knock on him -- he's not an overly big guy and he has a tendency to get injured. When/if healthy, I think he can be a NFL quarterback.

This is exactly what I am talking about. We all know the Duke offense was the worst unit on the field for Duke. We know the offense struggled. We know the Duke coaches brought in someone to upgrade the QB position in the portal. Despite all of that, you argue he did his job. As the saying goes "Do not let the facts get in the way of truth".

Someone can be pretty good and still be improved upon. How many 9-3 Duke seasons, with victories over FSU, have you witnessed?

That is definitely it, evidence by Maalik finishing 71st in QBR, 13 turnovers in 12 games, and the high demand for him in the portal

At the risk of stirring up this pot of shit, have we considered that Ewers supporting cast in 2024 was worse than it was in 2023? All this talk about the talent around him has me wondering.

I think WR and RB definitely took a step back. OL probably improved, just with the same group of guys getting another year older, but losing Worthy, Mitchell, Whittington, Brooks, and Baxter could not have helped. Golden was a great replacement, but Bond disappointed and the other WR options (Wingo and Moore) were very green. No hate on Wisner either, who stepped up in a big way, but he is just not on the same level of Brooks and Baxter.

Ewers definitely looked worse this past season, but I think some of it could be explained by the offense as a whole taking a step back.

OL was probably better, but that is it. The defense was light out. Big difference being the 2nd/3rd WR. Saying a QB needs to have 3 NFL WRs to be a great college QB is not a serious argument in my opinion. Its really rare for college QBs to get that luxury, unless you play QB at OSU recently. There are not a lot of QBs last year that had equal or more talent.

True. But I'm really thinking about WR play in terms of its relevance to comparing '23 Ewers and '24 Ewers, rather than comparing Ewers to other QBs.

Not like this was a bad or even a mediocre WR room. I'd bet we will look back at 24 and say he was throwing to 3 NFL talents. It was a downgrade from what was a historic Texas level, but still at a level that would make 95% or more of college Qbs jealous.

Sure, but you could also argue that more than a few times Wingo and Moore killed drives with mistakes.  Moore almost gifted Clemson a game changing pick 6.  Wingo didn't breakoff his route versus Vandy which lead to a sack and us settling for a FG.

i can go over Ewer's miscues but let's focus on Moore dropping a ball where he was staring directly into the sun. This implies Worthy  Worthy never dropped a ball.

Quick note on Quinn with the Dolphins - McDaniel stated that Wilson is the #2 and Quinn #3 the other day, but that Quinn was "doing what he was supposed to do."

It also sounds like Tua will get zero reps in the preseason games so it's up to Quinn to produce (and not get injured).

I’m just pointing out that young talent generally makes mistakes compared to 3rd year players.  You saw a similar dropoff in 2009 when Colt no longer had Cosby and Collins.  Cosby wasn’t even drafted, but our 2009 offense would have been a great deal better if he hadn’t run out of eligibility.

For my personal tastes, I think Mitchell was a bit overrated but Whitt a little underrated.  Also a big Worthy fan.  But net, there is a decrease to ‘24.  Frosh Baxter was pretty much just a guy.  Brooks started slow and didn’t finish.  He had a great middle of the season. Blue as a pass catcher is somewhat of a unique talent.  In theory the Oline improved from ‘23 to ‘24.

I do believe the 2023 defenses versus the 2024 defenses we faced were easier to attack.  It’s the flip side when we look at our defense.  Their job game-by-game was easier in ‘24.

I would say it’s rational to believe Ewers work was more difficult in ‘24 than ‘23.

No doubt about this.  On individual plays, it’s hard to see at times particularly in live action.  The non-fan favorites get the blame sometimes.  We might even have one in the secondary now that got blamed for others missteps in the past.

y’all are spending all this time talking about the wr room (which was one of the better wr rooms in america) as if it had anything to do with quinn’s issues. our wr room made quinn look *better* than he actually was (todd mcshay can’t stop creaming himself over how many bad throws were caught by golden) and y’all are in here talking about the “wr room drop off” like that’s why quinn has zero pocket presence, is scared to death to get hit, is inaccurate, has poor footwork, can’t throw deep, has no zip on his passes, routinely self sacks, etc. stop acting like it’s anyone else’s fault that QE was one of our offenses worst players last year. it wasn’t the wr room’s fault that QE was uninspiring as a qb.
