Gary Numan at Empire Garage last night. He always puts on a good show.

I do wonder how many 60-something fans of his 70/80s music finally come to a show and wonder how they ended up at a nine inch nails concert.

I will continue to track down Je'Texas and see their shows while they are still around.  The three of them are a perfect match... Dylan's genius combined with the absolute perfection of Gian and Damien holding down the rhythm section.  I swear these three are time travelers from 1969.

Dumb Austin parking question amnesty, plz.

We're going to see Lord Huron at the Moody on Thursday, and this is the first time I've ever paid for VIP anything.  We get access to enter at 5p.

I reserved parking at Garage R over by Scholz, but it doesn't officially start until 5p.  My preference would be to get there early and get something to eat /drink at Scholz, then walk over to the venue by 5p.

Will I be able to enter the garage between say 3-4p, or is it all state employee access until then?  Do I need a different plan?

It should be evident I haven't lived in Austin in a long time.

Nope. I wasn’t at that show.

Nation of Language last night at The Studio at the Bomb Factory. They were on fucking fire.

Guess y’all tuned them up pretty good the night before at The Mohawk because they said they were really impressed with the Texas crowds about halfway thru the set. If you’re in Houston and on the fence on tonight’s show, just go.

Had zero idea they were from the US (Brooklyn). I have just assumed they were from Britain. Very 80’s/New Order vibe but I read about their Krautrock adjacency and now I can’t unhear it.

The chick in the band seems pretty cute.

I was probably standing 6 feet to your left. Friend texted me that morning had an extra ticket; I was pleasantly surprised. Their music has much more energy live than on the album.

When did you arrive/how close to the front were you? We're going Thursday so just curious how early/late arriving the crowd was up front

Wow, saw that The Revivalists are playing Stubbs tonight.  Think I am going to go down and grab a ticket.  Looks like a solo trip though...  As wife and usual buddies are a no go.

With the weather nice, should be a nice show.

I enjoyed the show but as I watched it I was thinking “how do I describe this to my wife?” She always asks me about the concerts.

Two adjectives came to mind: theatrical and pretentious.

A few songs later, the lead singer calls himself a pretentious asshole. Points for self awareness.

They put a lot of work into the concept and execution of their show. It is a show.

that's funny.  i hung out with them after acl 10 or so years ago at a friends house and they were the farthest thing from that at the time.  really nice dudes with no ego.

My wife and I really wanted to see Kevin Morby open so we were there around 7:45. Morby went on at 8. I think he's doing the Houston show too. He only played for half an hour and was off the stage at 8:30. Lord Huron came on at 9:05. The pit area at Toyota Music Factory can be very small. It was last night. We were only about three "rows" deep and decided we'd stay there until we didn't want to any longer. (We stayed there the entire show.) Maybe catch the beginning of Lord Huron and move back a bit. Not sure what the setup will be in Houston.

Oh, it's a scene alright. We enjoyed it. They couldn't get into most of the theater stuff when we saw them headline at High Water Fest back in April. Great show but it was "just the songs." I thought the visual aspects of the show were spectacular. Had kind of Fallout Pacific Northwest feel to it. They played a terrific set and this is easily in my top 10 shows of the year, maybe top five -- though that's getting a little crowded as we get to the end of the year and we've got Luna in early December.

We're going to the Austin show at Moody Center. Front half of the floor is GA, Back half seated. Looks like tickets are only barely half-sold, too

I bedazzled my power dome for the Devo show in ATX on 11/1.
This fucker is heavy. I'll have to get another dome as my daily wearer.91d207cb18d49b9a68895faa3ce7475e.jpg

I was let down by Morby. I wanted to hear Dorothy. I grade each band I see. He ranks as a “no” for future shows.

Only playing 30 minutes seemed strange. The sound was horrific for him. I thought at the time that maybe we were too close to the stage but Lord Huron sounded perfect there. It just wasn’t set up for him. I’d like to see him in a smaller venue as the headliner where it would better translate.

Letterman used to sing "America" to his son at bedtime, so in the lead up to his final show, they had First Aid Kit on to cover it.

I love watching old clips of Letterman performances, because you can really tell when something hits for him.  The end of this clip shows that.

Lord Huron was fantastic in Houston last night. My third time to see them in the past 18 months and those dudes show up and don’t nail in anything. Lots of thought and creativity in every song/performance/visual. Loved the live version of Ends of the Earth.

Kevin Morby (who i wasn’t familiar with before he was named the opener) was incredibly meh.

I would agree that it was a less-than-inspiring 30 mins that he's getting and the sound is not set up for him at all. And the venues are too big for him but he's got some great stuff and I highly encourage you to listen to a little of him on Spotify. He's done some stuff with Katie Crutchfield/Waxahatchee. I had no idea Morby was actually born in Lubbock until the other day. He started his musical career in Woods, which has some good stuff too. As I said earlier in this thread, I'd really enjoy see him headline in a smaller venue.

Saw the name First Aid Kit and was like hey they sound familiar. They featured on two M. Ward songs on his latest album. I really like this one:

Kind of a non-sequitur but my wife and I have been to a lot of shows over the last few years and we saw a TON of things in 2024. I think the musical highlight of 2024 for me was M Ward singing "Poison Cup" in front of a very sparse crowd at The Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff.

Ah man. That sounds amazing. I love that song.

Lord Huron was awesome. I had no idea what to expect. They seem to be between venue sizes at this point and playing arenas for the first time. Since they aren’t selling out arenas yet, there will be cheap tickets available day of the show if you’re on the fence about going. After NIN, this was my next favorite show of the year so far.

They're not really playing arenas. Moody Center was an odd choice and it was a weird configuration--none of the upper level side sections were open but the far upper deck facing the stage was. Seats were only about 2/3 sold at most.

Seemed like a much more natural fit for Moody Amp

I openly admit I have a LH problem, as this was the fourth time my son and I had seen them this year.

Thought it was a spectacular show, and I had a much better "old man yells at cloud" experience at the Moody Center this time.

If you dug the show, you owe it to yourself to see them at Red Rocks.  They're a natural fit for that place.

Think they played decent-sized arenas in KC and STL right before the Las Colinas show. Kevin Morby posted this pic on his FB page (think this was STL -- might be the Blues arena):

This was the first show we've been to at Toyota Music Center in Las Colinas where the lawn seating was available. That place holds 8000 with the lawn. Neither My Morning Jacket or Wilco used the "open" configuration with the lawn. We were in Pit but it appeared the lawn was pretty well populated.

I was in Las Vegas for NBA summer league years ago. Talking to another writer he said he was going to see this band at a downtown venue call The Beauty Shop, a converted beauty salon turned bar that has since closed. There in the back lot was Lord Huron playing with about 30 people watching. They had something special back then. Playing bigger Beauty Shops now. Good for them.

viagra boys at white oak music hall in houston last thursday. it was originally going to be on the inside stage but that sold out and they moved it outdoors. it was about 75% full, plenty of room to move around, never a line for anything...definitely enjoyed the venue. band was great, crowd was pretty chill but definitely into it. setlist was great...especially research chemicals and ain't no thief. really wanted to hear dirty boyz, didn't get that one but they did play a new song called therapy.

stereolab and viagra boys at far out lounge on halloween. stereolab sounded good but they don't have much stage presence. they at least could have worn some halloween costumes. felt like the crowd was ready for more energy, they were kind of a weird pairing with the rest of the lineup. i did enjoy their set though. viagra boys definitely brought the energy and the crowd was absolutely nuts. got a shorter set than houston by a couple songs but it was a great show. the far out lounge continues to suck ass. the place was waaaay oversold. wasn't anywhere to escape the crowd. couldn't even get a drink because the line was absurd...stood there for 20 minutes without moving and gave up, must've been an hour wait. i don't understand why levitation continues to have events there.

viagra boys at house of blues in dallas on saturday. it was advertised as doors at 8 show at 9. apparently the opening band actually went on at 7:30 and viagra boys hit the stage at 8:30...so a bunch of people missed the first 30 minutes of their set and were rightfully pissed off about it. played the same set that they did in houston, once again a great show. think i finally got my fix of viagra boys. been listening to the new album non-stop.

My daughter was on the guest list and hosted a costume party at her house post show.  Viagra Boys showed up.  I have photos of my (formerly?) straight-laced son partying with the band.  Jesus.  Maybe DON'T invite your little brother?

(just found this on a xitter thread about the decline of 'dirty 6th'. guess this is as good a place as anywhere to put it. if there's a better thread for it, please let me know)

I don't think I ever saw Extreme Heat.  Saw most of those other bands, though.  SRV at Steamboat must have been a trip.  I'm still suffering hearing loss from seeing Eric Johnson there.

I remember once on a Tuesday night I was wondering around 6th & heard some sweet sounds coming from 311. It was Stevie playing under an assumed name. Place wasn't even totally full. Paid my $5 or whatever & saw one of the best shows I've ever seen, to this day.

Eric could be really loud back in the day.  I have no idea how that dude can hear.

I have few possessions that are prized, but my autographed Tones album jacket and a Get Well card that Eric sent me many years later are two of them.

He is so good.

Had a blast in Austin last weekend.

Friday- Viagra Boys, Stereolab, & Black Lips

As @stc was saying, absurdly packed.  We got in the line for a beer with a couple of songs left for Stereolab and finally got a drink just as Black Lips were finishing.  Bullshit.  Viagra Boys were a blast.  I was dressed like a jumbo shrimp and partied with 50 other people dressed as shrimp  #shrimptech

Saturday - B52's and DEVO

I had never been out to the racetrack and everybody kept telling me how shitty traffic and parking was.  I had no such issues.  The rain caused a short delay so we didn't miss anything.  B52's opened and I learned really quickly to not look at the screens on the side of the stage.  Kate looked like she had been reanimated from the dead and Fred looked like a mannequin stuffed into a sparkly suit with how stiffly he moved.  Cindy looked pretty good for a 68 year old.  They sounded pretty good.  I spent most of the set taking pictures with randos.  I had my disco ball power dome and white jumpsuit on.  My buddy was also in a white jumpsuit but with a red power dome.

Devo killed it.  They are so much fun.  I saw them in May at the Cruel World fest in Pasadena and was able to get a lot closer to the stage.  I don't like venues as large as this one was.  Everywhere felt far away.

Sunday -

Leon Thomas - was invited to go to an ACL taping.  Shockingly, I have never been to a taping.  It was fun but I wasn't really into his music.  The band members kept trading instruments and they were all really talented but then they would play 90's r&b style music.  We left after an hour or so and headed to 29th Street Ballroom to see

The Macks.  They are my favorite Portland band.  Fun as hell.  The lead singer ended up hanging upside down from the rafters for the final song.  Grabbed some posters for my barage on the way out.
