I can think of a lot of words to describe recruiting right now - satisfying, exciting, fun, wonderful, enjoyable - the list goes on.

Boring, however, is not among them.

Anyone describing recruiting as boring right now is an absolute masochist.

They miss the pain and torture of pining for a 5 star (or a reasonable 4 star) that we had no realistic shot at landing.

Malik-mas was fun and all as an example of what landing a highly recruit felt like during the Mack, Strong, and Herman days. But, I much rather land 5 star recruits like it's a regular everyday thing and experience the schadenfreude watching recruiting for OU, A&M, and the old vanguard of the SEC.

'Consistent': No. 1 linebacker Xavier Griffin locks in Alabama official visit fresh off USC decommitment

Brett Greenberg (Bama 247)

A relentless pursuit from Alabama outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson has earned the Crimson Tide an expected official visit from Xavier Griffin, the No. 1 linebacker in the country out of Gainesville (Ga.).

The return trip will have a much different feel, however, with the No. 8 overall prospect in the country entering that multi-day visit as an uncommitted prospect. Griffin reopened his recruitment on Wednesday after being committed to USC since July 2024.

"I want to enjoy this process and make sure I explore my options because time is winding down and I didn't think that was fair to USC while being committed," he explained the decision with Bama247.

Despite the longtime pledge, Bama247 has continued to bring up the elite prospect as one to follow for future trips and potential change of plans. The Crimson Tide always felt like they were in a good position to earn one, even dating back to much earlier in the recruitment.

"Could this be another case of an early west coast commitment before schools closer to home (Alabama, Georgia) become the main threats?," Bama247 said in December. "We will see, but it wouldn't be surprising."

His mother confirmed the news and summer plans with Bama247 on Wednesday afternoon. Griffin also shared some quick thoughts on the change of heart and reason for the return to Alabama.

The plan is for Griffin to be back in Tuscaloosa (Ala.) from June 6-8, which is shaping up to be an incredibly strong weekend for the Crimson Tide. The group already included No. 1 Alabama CB commit Jorden Edmonds (Marietta, GA), four-star Alabama DL commit Jamarion Matthews (Gainesville, GA), three-star Alabama DL commit Kamhariyan Johnson (Muscle Shoals, AL), our-star S Jireh Edwards (Upper Marlboro, MD), four-star WOLF Jaquez Wilkes (Wadley, AL) and four-star WOLF Khamari Brooks (Bogart, GA) among others.

It will mark the first time on campus this year and fourth visit to campus since Kalen DeBoer was named head coach. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder visited in the spring, summer and was in town for the Georgia game last fall.

"Growing up as 'Bama fan, I'm excited to take this opportunity and have my family along with me," Griffin told Bama247 on Wednesday. "I was able to make a dream come true and take my granddaddy to a 'Bama game this past fall. He has been a 'Bama fan his whole life and works in Tuscaloosa, but had never been to a game before so I was blessed to bless him. I have a great relationship with the staff, especially Coach (Christian Robinson) and the one thing he has done throughout this whole process is be consistent."

A combination of (Kalen) DeBoer, (Christian) Robinson and/or general manager Courtney Morgan have also visited with Griffin and his mother at Gainesville (Ga.) High School and at their home during both the winter and spring contact periods. Robinson has visited twice already and Morgan has also traveled to the Peach State.

"It's been going well," Griffin said of the recruitment earlier this spring. "Coach CRob has been in contact since he started recruiting me. He just wants me to get down there, talk with the guys who are there now and talk with the coaches. See how I would fit in there and in the scheme."

"It was a great time as always," Griffin's mother told Bama247 of the most recent time around Robinson and Morgan. "Good food, conversation and genuineness."

"I would say that (Alabama) has remained consistent with their actions and communication," she has also told Bama247 during the recruitment. "We talk to Coach Robinson several times throughout the week. They all continue to express that Xavier is the guy for them, and 'Bama is the place that needs and wants him. I tell him all the time it has to be a genuine connection and vibe and if you don't have that then it will feel forced and never feel like home. Coach Robinson especially has put forth the effort to make Xavier feel like he is a top priority for their 2026 class and I love that! A lot of coaches talk it, but actions always speak louder than words."

The 'WOLF' fit is also huge, as has been shared frequently.

"Being able to do more than one thing is always big for me," he told Bama247 earlier this year. "I know I can do both. I wouldn't want to just be put in a box. That also helps you draft stock with (scouts) seeing that you can do more than one thing. You're not just an EDGE rusher. You're not just a MIKE linebacker."

As has been well documented as well, Griffin is an Alabama native and his mother isn't very shy about her strong fandom towards the Crimson Tide. He's also got a high school teammate who is committed to Alabama in Jamarion Matthews. There are a few ties to Alabama.

Griffin also has official visits lined up with Ohio State (May 30 - June 1), Texas (June 13-15) and Florida State (June 15-17). Here is what he told Bama247 about the Buckeyes, Longhorns and Seminoles.

"Ohio State was one of my favorites before I committed but their defensive scheme didn't fit me, so I'm excited to see the new schemes and how I would fit in them. Me and Coach (James) Laurinaitis have a great relationship as well. He is an Ohio State legend, so it's pretty cool to see him in this role as a coach."

"Texas has been one to really surprise me and my mom as well. We went out there for the first time last month and it was just a lot of love shown, they really have a great camaraderie amongst the players and coaches so excited to be around that again for the official visit. Austin is like in between Los Angeles and Atlanta, so a lot different than what we were expecting."

"Florida State, I love Coach (Mike) Norvell's energy and who he is as a man. They are another program that has been consistent with me. I have a great relationship with Coach (John Papuchis) who is now in the linebacker room coaching, so that was exciting to see. I believe they are working hard along with the players to truly turn things back around. They are hungry to have a great season."

There is no timetable for a final decision as of now, but it would not be surprising if one was made soon after the official visits.

Wolk is an SEC honk secondarily to his Georgia allegiance. I'm not talking Texas and OU in the SEC, either. He defaults to any old SEC team if not Georgia when picking guys from SEC country. For Justus Terry, he had Georgia by a mile and if not them, Auburn. He did not include Texas as a contender until after the guy announced for Texas.

Griffin may wind up at Bama, but Wolk isn't dealing with new information on this one. He's simply picking who he would always pick.

Wright is someone that they think they can develop and not worry about being on the roster through that development into his 3rd, 4th or 5th year. They're thin at OT and need some padding. The high 4 and 5 star guys aren't going somewhere in which they're going to need to wait until year 4 to play. Texas can land 2 of the highly ranked guys if they thread the needle right, but they're not getting 3 of them.

BTW, regarding Wolk on Griffin, he posted an update today admitting that Texas and FSU likely have as good a shot as Bama. Griffin is OVing to Georgia this weekend, but they’re not bullish about landing him.

Going back through the thread, the story on Riley is that Joseph and Gideon weren't all that interested, but Akina and Hudson really like him. Does seem like a guy that you could let it play out a little bit before taking the commitment. Whatevs.

Some of you still base your opinions on recruits by stars assigned by folks that are mostly unqualified to do so. This staff has shown they can evaluate and develop. If they want a recruit you should be excited when they commit. Bunch of star fuckers up in this bitch.

I mean, we like and generally trust the staff, but beating out Vandy and UH for a kid raises some valid questions about why they like him so much - which have been answered in this thread.

I've watched some Penn St games over the years. Not a ton, I think they're boring, but I still would have expected to know that.  I assume that scarf is to hide the fully erect penis from the parents?

Didn’t we have pictures of one of our assholes running around in a pedo bear suit at a bowl game they played in Dallas on the other site? Looked it up to see if they’ve played in a bowl game there “recently,” and they lost to Houston in the 2012 Ticket City Bowl at the Cotton Bowl.

I asked about this guy and Howard to one of the best evaluators in the business. His view is that this staff is developing really well and they have everything needed to become excellent CFB dbs and Howard could easily be transformed into an early round pick if he really wants to put in the work and stay healthy.

Apparently the Riley guy has ridiculous instincts? If he’s one of those dbs who can see the future, they don’t come around every cycle. Probably wishcasting to that level, but should be fun to watch. They’re definitely looking for guys they can develop who won’t be hitting the portal after one fall semester.

They’re still going to take any of the highly ranked guys that they can reel in at db.

It’s one of those things that if these guys are the floor of the DB class then holy shit, we landed a damn good DB class.

And if they suck, Sark will make them get their ass in the mf portal, respectfully, of course.

After seeing the stats and watching the highlights on Riley, I’m pretty happy with the take. I’m guessing the fact that he plays at Anderson high school may affect his exposure a little, too. Not exactly a factory for major D1 universities.
