We are losing out on one "50/50" guy after another. It sucks. I know we're gonna rebound, recruit through the whistle blah blah blah, but it sucks to get second place time after time after time.

Using 50/50 for a recruitment seems like such a 9.95er thing.

I don’t doubt there are recruitments from time to time where a kid is actually torn but there is no way it happens as frequently as 9.95ers like to use that phrase.

Half of me thinks you’re right…

Hindsight is 20/20, but I agree that the 80/20 rule applies, and most of these recruitments aren’t actually 50/50

For a laugh, go watch OTF the last couple of weeks and when the recruits graphic comes up. Write down how many of them say we "feel good about" or "Texas lean" compared to today. $9.95 please.

I don't imagine a single person is going to do that.

After July 1, it is likely that the pattern of commitments will change. We are, as I understand it, already on the course of stable roster building and NIL$ allocation. Other schools may be making promises and deals which are one-off because of the impending house settlement effect and/or deleterious to stability/morale because of disparities on the team relating to nothing more than timing of signing.

The only guys I’ve seen them consistently use those phrases on are Okpala, Turntine, Guervil, Ojo, Carlton and Matthews, which is of course the last group to announce in these string of commitments.

I don’t think Gerry ever blew smoke up our ass about Simeon or Lee. Only said stuff like “Texas is right there”. I don’t remember his stance on Calicut.

We were never getting 10 defensive linemen. We will end up with 5 and be more than fine with the best d-line class in the country. And don’t be sour pusses when we have 6 defensive linemen in a few weeks and then lose one during the season.

I don’t follow recruiting but it sounds like Texas should just shut down its program due to future uncompetitiveness. Is that accurate?

yes.

FWIW, the Miami mods told their 247 board that Miami is not expected to land Johnson.

I’m glad they’re choosing to blow all of their budget on 5-Star RBs and Carson Beck’s car insurance premiums

The only reason to be negative about recruiting or the state of the program right now is because you view life with the worst of expectations to psychologically protect yourself from disappointment, or you’re a troll who likes to wind people up. Or you’re just ignorant and lack any sort of perspective.

The reason to follow recruiting closely for me is in part so I have some sort of realistic expectation for our chances of landing some of these kids. There’s not a single target that’s gone a different path than Texas that I’m surprised by. Part of that is because I probably follow recruiting a little too obsessively, but for anyone posting regularly on this thread, that describes you, too.

The KJ Edwards commitment felt like it came out of nowhere. The rest of them I felt like I had a good idea they were going to go the way they went.

Texas is in great shape. I have followed Texas recruiting in times where the head coach was so scared of rejection, and loved to brag how often he hit on all his targets, that he was scared to death of going after prospects where the chances of landing them was 50/50.

These guys have their big boy pants on. Plus, in an era where football recruiting is more transactional than it ever has been, if the budget isn’t there for a player, it’s going to impact our chances considerably.

I recently asked a guy in the industry how often Texas loses a recruitment where UT is the highest bidder, and he said in his estimation it was about 1 out of 10.

We’re still in June. We have a great recruiting class forming. We have more studs ready to commit. We rarely lose flips to other schools (although we’re not invulnerable to it). We regularly flip kids from other schools to Texas. How the season unfolds will create more opportunities in recruiting. The class we sign in December is going to be outstanding. We’re in a good place right now.

This can't happen very often. Like a Dakorian Moore situation maybe?
