65-35 right now, and Arkansas just lost a player to injury, kid went straight to the locker room. they are probably all regretting this little road trip right about now. 🤘🏼

I loathe Arkansas in basketball. I wish for horrible things to happen to their program. Lots of respect for how passionate and inbred their fans are. And Musselman was an outstanding hire. This is so fulfilling for me.

Disu with a steal and the slam coming out of an Arkansas timeout.

Texas just about to double up these fuckheads at 69-35.

This is better than porn.

Morris blew by his defender to make an emphatic dunk.

90-60 is the final score.

In my most fervent dreams I didn't expect this.

While the inside defense is pretty scarce on bodies, the backcourt ball handling and overall athleticism is off the charts. Morris looks as good as advertised. If he plays like this the rest of the year he gone. I know it's the first exhibition game against an overwhelmed opponent, but if a dog is going to bite, they're going to bite as a pup.

This. Was. Awesome.

Not for nothing but Gerry posted a "Hi." shortly after the game ended. For those that don't know, he posts that when good news is about to drop. Basically, Holland committed.

This train is about to really get rolling.

The top point guard in the class of 2024, Elliot Cadeu, just dropped his top 6, with Texas being among them. Says the Final Four Texas Tech team was his favorite. He's still trying to schedule an official visit.

We'll see how the season progresses, but if Bishop and Disu can stay healthy I see a very promising future for this year's group. The amount of flexibility, athleticism and defensive pressure they're going to be able to put on opponents is unreal. The arena is going to be a happening place. The fans are going to feel rewarded for attending, especially the students.

It all feels like it's coming together. I can hardly believe it. I couldn't be more excited about the upcoming season and the seasons to come than I am right now.

you can see when i pan up to the scoreboard that beard is just relentlessly going off in the official's ear. he did that all game. we were up 30 in the 2H and he was relentless when it came to working the officials. that right there will probably be the most unnoticed aspect of our success this year. no more meekness on the sidelines. he is ruthless.

Spent the day fishing--no regrets--so didn't get to listen to the game. Reading this thread, however, has me salivating.

Thanks to all--especially SL_Express and Derka--for the updates, opinions and videos. While just a scrimmage, sounds like the team is well ahead of where it was at the same time last year.

Nov. 7 can't get here fast enough!

I am trying to stay humble in my outlook..

Well, here's how I'm staying humble:

1. Arkansas is not very good right now. They have 11 new players and it shows. They're terrible defensively and they quit when they're behind. Musselman said after the game it's exactly what he's seen in practice all along. No shooters. A lack of a commitment to defense. No mental resiliency.

2. I'm not counting on Morris to be our 3 point shooting specialist. It is interesting that Musselman singled out how difficult it was to close on Morris shooting the three because of how he "rises" when he shoots. That said, coming out of high school I always thought of Morris as a good but not great 3 point shooter with extreme athleticism who dribbles a little high but is a very gifted floor general and is excellent in transition. This could have been an anomaly from beyond the arc. On the other hand, I don't need him to shoot 40%+. Anything around 35% will do just fine to open up the floor. Especially with the way he attacks the rim. My lord.

3. We're one injury away from Bishop or Disu to being a donut of a team. I guess Cunningham, Mitchell, and Allen can play minutes at the 5 in a pinch, but nobody should think about that as anything but an unmitigated disaster for long stretches.

4. Could there be an issue if Morris continues to be dominant when he's on the floor? On the one hand, first world problems. On the other, first world problems can still be serious problems. TyTy Washington was drafted in the first round after backing up Savhir Wheeler for Kentucky. Is that Morris's path? What is his body language on the bench? How does he respond to mishaps on the floor? I don't want to read too much into anything, but on the terrible feed I was watching the game on (someone in one of the Moody Arena lounges was using their phone to stream the internal feed from the TVs in there to twitter) it did look like there was some surliness, so to speak. He especially seemed emphatic on the errant pass from Disu in the second half which resulted in a turnover. Could be nothing.

I'm of the opinion the whole Morris thing is going to take some amazing management skills on Beard's part. He's been practically shunned on the social media feeds because of what went down. He's going to catch hell from every Big 12 fan base in the conference. You know that's coming. I'm hopeful he's approaching the whole thing with humility "I regret my actions, I've learned lessons, and I will do better in the future" as opposed to, "I've done nothing wrong and am being picked on." I hope he feels like his teammates and the coaching staff have his back and he can be a huge contributor to the success of this team by playing within a role and making every minute on the court count, regardless of when he's coming in the game.

5. I've got nothing else. We just creamed Arkansas, and honestly, I'm so happy right now I can't stand it. I've been reading Arkansas message boards and seeing all of them write about the hated short horns. It's been glorious. What a beat down.

I was more excited about Morris’s talent as a recruit than probably anyone we signed since Myles Turner, but I also kind of tempered expectations because of some “surliness” as you call it.  This was purely based on seeing him play, way before the off court stuff.  Morris didn’t really have to put in maximum effort or keep up a good attitude at Kimball.

I wasn’t sure how that would mix with Beard and his style.  While the basketball factory high schools recruiting 15 year old players is unsavory, Mitchell and other guys that go to the decent schools like Monteverde come in better prepared to accept college coaching, play defense, and generally perform roles other than “star who gets to do what we wants when he feels like it.”  But, frankly, it looks like Morris is too explosive to not be a good player this year, so I’m not sure we even get to the part where there is a clash with the coach.  I think 4-6 on 3s yesterday was a bit of an anomaly, but he will be a good shooter and is a different class of athlete than most guys in college basketball. He’s going to play and play well.

Yeah, he looks one and done to me. The three point shooting just shows he can do it. It's blowing by guys like they're not there and dunking with ease part that makes me think it.

But it's only one scrimmage.

Your comments are very germane.

Look, we have a data point already with Tre Mitchell. A little bit with Jaylon Tyson, too. One thing I can say with confidence is if something happens with Morris, Beard is going to act like it's all okay, and pretty much completely ignore it. There's a very much "my team is on the floor" kind of attitude about Beard. He's going to move forward with what he has and not really look back with much introspection whatsoever.

All I can say is I hope Morris plays really tough defense. The best way to get to the bench with Beard is less than maximum effort on defense. He loves talking about non negotiables. Well, that's a way bigger one for him than what's going on on the offensive side of the ball.

I know I'm not the only one. shadow_operative mentions it often. But I love all of your posts. I know you're not the windy blow hard War and Peace novella type like me, but if there's anything I can do to encourage you to post more I'd like to. Well, other than doing more editing on mine. That's my non negotiable, lol.
