Nah man.  I get your wanting the family to approve what is happening. But you are operating under a terribly mistaken belief that the family somehow has a right to control what was happening.  They don’t. They never do. It would be fucked up if they did. They are angry family members with a legitimate reason to be angry, but with zero reason to run the show.

The goal is to convict an accused murderer, not to let family members spend the county’s money for three months so they can stare angrily at the accused in trial, no matter how much they want that.

No, the families are pissed. You don’t tell the family you’re going to fight for the death penalty, take a back room deal, and then send them an email to inform them. This was a disgrace.

How is it a back room deal? Every one of your posts read like the families are a party to the case.

I'm not even arguing that it wasn't poorly handled. But to act like this is some grave injustice seems a bit much.

Why does he have a right to any of those things? He's an inmate for fucks sake

Many states have laws against profiting from such things.

But for non-profit (to the defendant) interviews, the right is really more that of the press and the public, or that's the way it is going to be analyzed.

Yeah the prosecution doesn't work for the families. Period. Do they get some consideration? Sure, but not that much.

They serve the interest of people, which includes not spending a shit ton of public money to satisfy a handful of aggrieved people.

I think Ethan and Maddie’s loved ones are ok with this deal. Clearly the Gonclaves family is not. Xana’s family wanted the trial but I have no idea about their feelings on the DP. Both Xana’s family and Kaylee’s have been vocal that they were pissed with the way this deal went down. Having said all that it does appear all the family’s will be in court tomorrow along with BK’s family. Ethan’s and Brian’s family already put out a statement requesting privacy and won’t be doing any interviews. Hopefully the sentencing date won’t be scheduled too far off, the parents have already waited a while for a trial and they were all prepared to move to Idaho for the duration of it which was expected to start in August.

and no I wouldn’t care if a giant anvil fell out of the sky and flatted him to the core of the earth. I hope they eventually the families will find solace in knowing at some point that the next ten or so years of their lives won’t be filled with appeals.

But it will take them a while to switch gears, they had all already committed to being there for the entire trial which was in just a little over a month and they are just having to change their mindset having been somewhat blindsided by the deal over the weekend. They were all gearing up for a long trial. A battle. Now they have to shift their minds to the new reality so I’m not going to judge them for feeling any type of way after they were all ready to go to trial.

and I bet this fucker will eventually grant interviews. Rooting for an anvil for him.

The families met with the prosecution quite a bit and they assured them they were going for the death penalty. They then accepted a deal and didn’t bother to tell them. Poorly handled is an understatement. Pricks.

Sounds familiar.

I get the righteous indignation. People get unjustifiably screwed on "deals." Unfortunately, it happens all the time, whether that happens in the jury box or at the ballot one. In this particular case, unless there's some sort of complete and utter societal breakdown, we know that this individual will no longer be capable of harming other innocents. At the end of the day, and in the abstract, we can be fairly certain that guy will die in a place where he's not likely to do much more harm to society at large. At least there's a cap to contain that damage. Sure, none of that can truly assuage the revenge, harm, or any other hateful thoughts they might feel, and I certainly feel an immense sense of pity for the shit they're going through, but there's some semblance of justice - even if it doesn't scratch that itch.

I will say, however, I don't quite get the compulsion/obsession with this kind of stuff when there are so many other examples of people getting shit on across the country and around the world where the victims are even more numerous, the crimes are equally (if not more) heinous, and the damage is more widely spread among the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of victims of injustice. It's the picking and choosing of folks we should feel sorry for that kind of bugs me.

Four young women are brutally murdered? Grab the pitchforks. It's an unforgivably horrendous crime. Four hundred thousand old people die early deaths because their government cuts off medical care in order to give tax breaks to billionaires? Hey, there's a couple of brown kids who speak a diffferent language or worship a different god. Therefore, their lives are expendable? Let's not discuss that in polite company so as to not disturb social etiquette and broach the topic of politics.

It's horrible that those young women died, but this double-standard shit is so out of whack, inconsistent, and immoral.

I mean, there are psychopaths among us, for sure. There's nothing we can do about their existence, but what in God's Earth says we should empower them? Seriously. I've got to say, turning off "give a shit" for people based on their social, political, racial, national, or religious standing is just so fucking gross, but that's where we're at when we pick and choose victims based in teevee attention.

I see nothing other than your quoting of my post, and I've checked two laptops, plus a cellphone. What's your point?

What's wrong with being upset by the deaths of both sets of innocents?

You’re painting with very broad strokes. One family is being very loud. One family has stayed quiet. Two other families have said they’re totally good with not going through the trauma of a trial.
