Commentary USA-Mexico, a Vegas extravaganza

by Paul Kennedy  @pkedit, Yesterday

How could you possibly upstage USA-Mexico? In front of a capacity crowd of 65,000? In Las Vegas?

This tweet, from The Athletic's Paul Tenorio, minutes after Thursday's Concacaf Nations League semifinal kicked off, with the news of the imminent rehiring of Gregg Berhalter   as national team coach, came close.

More than six months after the Reyna-Berhalter soap opera was touched off by remarks Berhalter made at a leadership conference, five and a half months after his contract expired, and three months after an investigation into the 1992 incident involving him and his current wife, then college freshmen, concluded, it became apparent that U.S. Soccer has decided to give the 2022 World Cup coach a new contract.

Huge news considering all that's happened, plus an international coaching search, the hiring of a new U.S. Soccer sporting director (Matt Crocker) and the appointment of two different caretaker coaches. The tip-off came a couple of hours before the USA-Mexico game kicked off when Ron Waxman, Jesse Marsch's agent, tweeted that his client would not be getting the USMNT coaching job. The search was over.

But Thursday's USA-Mexico game was like no other in the rivalry's 76-game history. It was worthy of a Vegas extravaganza.

• The USA smashed Mexico, winning by 3-0, its largest margin of victory ever over El Tri in 46 official matches dating back to 1934.

• The match got out of hand in the second half with the issuance of four red cards — two to Americans Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest and two to Mexicans Cesar Montes and Gerardo Arteaga — to go along with nine yellow cards.

• Repeated homophobic chants by Mexican fans forced Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton to stop the match once, activating Concacaf's anti-discrimination protocol. The chants continued following every goal kick by U.S. keeper Matt Turner before Barton, who lost control of the match early in the second half, ended it, mercifully for Mexico, seven minutes into 12 minutes of stoppage time.

• Fights broke out at Allegiant Stadium. All Concacaf said in a statement was that "security staff ejected several fans for engaging in unacceptable behavior in the stadium. These incidents were extremely disappointing and tarnished what should have been a positive occasion to showcase high-quality football in our region."

The high-quality football was all one-sided, a dominating performance by the USA against a Mexico team that was shockingly bad.

The poor state of Mexican soccer has been evident for a while. El Tri lost to the USA three times in succession in 2021, in the final of the first Nations League in Denver, in the Gold Cup in Las Vegas and in the first meeting in World Cup 2022 qualifying in Cincinnati. At Qatar 2022, Mexico failed to get out of its World Cup group for the first time in 44 years.

A change of coaches has done nothing to improve the outlook of Mexican fans. "I know the chair that I sit in. I know there are more fans who want me gone than want me to stay," said new head coach Diego Cocca — and that was before Thursday night's shellacking, his first defeat in six games in charge.

On the other hand, just what kind of performance the Americans would produce was hard to predict.

Many key players were coming off the worst seasons of their pro careers. Of the 10 European-based players who started against Mexico, just three were regular starters at the end of their 2022-23 club seasons (Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun and McKennie) and just one (Robinson) is assured of starting next season at the club he finished this season with.

Six of those 10 starters will be on the summer transfer market: Christian Pulisic, Timothy Weah and Yunus Musah, in search of new homes so their current clubs can cash in on transfer fees, and Balogun, Dest and McKennie, all with uncertain futures after the end of their loan deals.

The other unknown was how the USMNT would respond to its second caretaker coach, B.J. Callaghan, a career assistant coach in charge of the national team for the first time.

"Today is a testament of the work that [Berhalter] put into this team," said Pulisic, who scored the first two U.S. goals and served as captain in place of the injured Tyler Adams. "B.J. picked up right where he left off and it's a testament to him, a testament to this team and the way that we just continued and put on a performance like that."

One of the most remarkable performances was put in by Dest, whose loan deal became a nightmare — his last appearance for AC Milan was on Jan. 24 — but who played a great game against Mexico ... until his needless red card in the 85th minute.

"I was disappointed in the end," Pulisic said of the red cards his two teammates received. "I really wish some of our guys kept their heads a little bit better."

But it was hard to let the two red cards spoil what Callaghan's players had accomplished, given the circumstances of their seasons.

"We look at the club performances," he said. "We understand. We're very confident in the culture and the brotherhood that we've created here. And many times when they come in here, it's an opportunity for them to get a reset, a refresh. They all look forward to coming in and being around each other. And I think that that type of energy and that type of positivity was on display tonight."

Humble...
Can't agree with you on this one...
GGG had NOTHING to do with Developing these Players.

The MLS Acadamies and Arsenal and other Foreign Acadamies BUILT THIS SQUAD.

If anything, He Stunted their Growth by IMPOSING a Rigid Positional Play System on them.
The Last 4 years have been ones of;  One Step Forward, Two Steps Backward...

Just witness the better Fluidity and Style of Play these Last 7 Months with OUT Ggg around.

Most of These players on this Roster, Where available for the Last 2 or 3 Years.
Yet, Ggg held back Development of players Like LDLT, Jonny, Tillman, CCV, Scally, Sonora for MLS Lifers.

That's how I see it too Santi.

Doesn't the technology exist to immediately locate "fans" using green laser pointers?  They should be immediately confronted by security, escorted out of the stadium, their identifications noted and their laser pointers confiscated.  They should then be banned from ever attending another match in American stadiums.

Barry,
No Doubt the Technology Exists via Drones to Locate Laser Lights...
Then you call in the Guided Missles to take out the Light.
It's Called HIMARs... Very Effective in Ukraine...
Might not be Practicle in Stadium...   But, it is Mexican Fans...

I'll take this as proof that the Federation doesn't want Gio's services anymore and the majority of his teammates don't care for him at all. I get it.

I'm confident Gio, the kid, will slot right back in whereever he's needed.  He did so tonight - and it's still basically Greg's staff.  He is a singular personality - this is known far and wide now.  It will be on Berhalter and his staff to bring out his best.  Anyway - the biggest challenge for Gio is not at the MNT - it's at the club - he needs to be playing - and impacting games - big and bigger games - regularly.  Success at club will be what defines Gio - not GB and MNT.  He knows this.

Grant Goodwin, June 16, 2023 at 12:11 p.m.

Good point Wooden Ships.  In hearing how Berhalter profiles the players and then slots them into his system...is very disappointing.  At least one player said that things go overly complicated at team practices.  Not sure why we hire a guy from England to rehire the same coach.  Berhalter, I thought, did a good enougH job.  However, i was looking forward to a new direction with more open mindedness towards other players who were left off...Pepi and Pefok in particular.

If Gio plays all the time under GB is, he pandering? If he doesn't does, GB have an axe to grind? Why would you have a situation that, you will never be clear of? GB never fixed the problem on the left side of the attack or the issue of almost zero service to whatever striker occupied the position. Some of the worst dead ball plays ever. Hudson did better with those in the short time he was in charge. This is a fail in so many ways that, it makes me question my fandom!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY

Kent James, June 16, 2023 at 2:14 p.m.

Tenorio putting this news out at gametime (or close) was unfortunate, since (as Clint Dempsey pointed out), it took attention away from the match, which was unfair to the players.

Not renewing GB's contract while the charges were investigated was probably appropriate.  Having a full search and then coming back to GB is either an impressive display of rational decision-making (getting the best available coach for the US team), or a tone-deaf decision of epic proportions.  We'll find out. It will certainly give GB-haters fuel for thousands of posts.

Before jumping to conclusions about salary limits for the position, I'd like to see evidence of that, since I'm pretty sure there are no legal limits to what US soccer can pay its coach.  I think if paying Pep $18 million would guarantee a World Cup, the USSF would find a way to pay him.  But there are no guarantees.  I think it's also important to remember that people like Pep and Jose who have had such success at the best leagues in the world may not be the best fit for the USMNT job.  To point out the obvious, the USMNT coach has to deal with the players he has access to, unlike club teams.  Additionally, as many USMNT critics like to constantly point out, the US does not have the world's best players (even as we have the strongest group we've ever had).  A coach getting the most of underrated players needs different skills than one who is managing the best players in the world.  I'm not saying Pep couldn't coach the team better than anyone else, just that there are no guarantees he would.

Finally, the best reason I've heard for hiring him is the support he has from the locker room.  To me, that's the most important consideration.  Players have a hard time playing for coaches they don't respect.  Clearly the players respect GB.  I also think GB is smart enough (and mature enough) that he will work out things with Reyna, and I hope Gio will be able to do the same.

Wooden Ships, June 16, 2023 at 9:59 a.m.

What, Tenorio has no self control with his tweets. Screw him. It definitely ruined my mid match enjoyment and I'm not on Twitter. Got to believe it was planned, what a schill. Congrats on the win but keep in mind these last few years we've seen the poorest Mexico side in its history. I'm disgusted that GB-Be the Change, BLM, DEI meathead (as many are today buying this bs) is returning. Did we have to hire an Englishman first to bring him back. USSF is a joke. What Pulisic is on the level of Messi and he wants Greg, Presto make it so. I'm not just upset with Greggiolas virtue signaling, I just don't think he's got a strong soccer IQ. We are letting the kids run the team, big mistake.

Yup Wooden...
Due to DEI, the Salaries of the US Coaching Staffs for both the XX and XY Team will need to be "Equitablized"
Vlatko makes aroung 25% of what Ggg made... Imagine if USSF Paid 10Million a Year for Pep,
What would the XXs say.???
Now you know ONE of the Reasons we brought back Ggg.

CP could Read the Handwriting on the Wall, and he wants to get back to being "Captian America"
That is why he has been "Backing" Ggg lately.
Also, by Being the "Frontman" he has Leverage over Ggg.
CP doesn't want to see Gio Eclipse him as "The Star"

I'm actually OK with "The Boys" Running the Team...
I advocated that going into the WC22, and Unfortunately, they didn't "Step Up" and Got FROZEN out by an Out-Coached Ggg versus Holland.

Hopefully the Players have Learned their Lesson...

This Team LIKES to Play "Balls-to-The-Walls"... They don't Like being "Constrained" in POSITIONAL PLAY.... They have Proven it lately, with NO Coach in Charge.

If Ggg is Smart, he will just Wind Them UP and Let them Play...
If he does that, I will actually be a Fan of his... Oh, and NO MLS QUOTAS.!!!

humble 1 replied, June 16, 2023 at 12:56 p.m.

GB just took the 2nd youngest team in the WC out of a difficult group into knockout play.  The prior cycle - the MNT did not qualify for the WC or the Olympics.  While he was coach we got back in both.  There were a lot of successes along the way with this young group, including many many caps given that enabled more young players to move to Europe.   My sense is the players - in the agregate - are happy - Pulisic for sure is happy.  I have no problem with this.  Did you notice that when we brought in subs - we brought in quality?  More quaitly than I've ever seen coming off the bench for USA.  This is because Stewart, McBride, and yes, Berhalter, they built this depth, over 4 years.  Enjoy!

humble 1 replied, June 16, 2023 at 1:04 p.m.

Is it perfect?  No.  Are we Holland, Spain, England?  No.  Are we making progress, yes.  Are we progressing with an American twist again, even with our currated roster with many players raised and developed abroad?  For me, yes.  I am OK with this.  This is a results business.  The results are in the open for all to see.  Qualify for the WC and Olympics.  Win everything in CONCACAF.  There is much much more to this sport than Ws and Ls, but that's the ultimate measure.  Our amazing ladies set be bar high.  C'mon boys!

International press destroys Mexico after defeat against the US: "It was embarrassing"

El Tri once again had a "paper" against the staunch rival (Photo: Mexsport)
The Aztec painting was once again bowed to the painting of the stars and stripes
June 16, 2023 | 8:08 a.m.

The Mexican National Team lost again to the United States in the Nations League , now by a score of 3-0, in what was another role for the "giant" of CONCACAF in an instance of "kill or be killed" against the staunch rival: by what the international press had no mercy against El Tri.

After the Mexican National Team , directed by Diego Cocca , could not avoid another failure after what was the Qatar 2022 World Cup, different international media had no problem qualifying Mexico 's performance against the United States in the Nations League Semifinals. as "embarrassing" and "ridiculous."

What did the international press say after Mexico's defeat against the United States?

After yet another failure of the Mexican National Team , the press from different parts of the world did not hesitate to describe the performance of those led by Diego Cocca as one of the most unfortunate in recent years. Diez, from Honduras, explained that Mexico gave "sports shame", as well as that the United States "humiliated" El Tri.

"The Mexican National Team suffered another disappointment against the United States in the Concacaf Nations League and it rains criticism for its little soccer, unsportsmanlike attitudes and homophobic shouts from its fans," explained Prensa Libre de Guatemala. "He signed a disappointing performance against an opponent he hasn't beaten for almost four years."

" The United States defeated Mexico , as has become customary in this classic in recent times (...) The team led by Cocca, former manager of Racing Club, once again left a very poor impression on the grass of the Allegiant Stadium", mentioned TyC Sports from Argentina.

Cannot believe how dirty that team is nor how atrocious their fans are. Every time with the kickoff "cheer' and throwing projectiles on the field.

I have every game on VHS up until the analog cutoff from which time forward all of the games are periodically available on utube.   If I ever get time I should write the full history of the escalation of bitchassedness on the field going unpunished which drove the escalation of bitchassedness in the stands going unpunished and while we had a bit of a detente during the klinsmann era it has been building again for the last 5 years to the point where we have never seen anything like what happened thursday night, which surpassed the '11 gold cup final that got bradley shot and the '09 final at the swamp which set the all-time benchmark low before this last game.

the US Government should declare every stadium in the US in which El Tri is going to play to be temporarily under the jurisdiction of the TSA who will require proof of legal existence in the US required to enter the stadium, and all bitchassedness will be enforced with ejection and result in permanent placement on the US no-fly list.

have fun storming the castle motherfuckers

SA recap friday morning

I think the card situation was the most ridiculous aspect of the USA Mexico game. That Mexico only had 1 more card than the us was just stupid. The ref failed to call Mexico for at least 3 yellow if not more (one of which should have been a 2nd/red). We were called for at least 1 card that was a complete joke. As the game was played it shouldn’t have been close, Mexico should have +6 cards.

Frankly if you call it right Mexico had to back off and the USA doesn’t get their reds either. Different story though.

Lucky to have decent depth to replace some very key players.

Aaronson isn't as viable a target on set pieces as McKennie is, but we suck on those, anyway. And his workrate is unmatched, even if it's not always productive.

Zimmerman is steady. Would've preferred Ream but he wasn't called into camp and his USMNT career maybe over (talking out of my ass here, no idea if that's the case)?

Scally has nowhere near Dest's skill (see that run and pass Dest made for the Thursday night's third and final goal), but he's a first-rate defender at this level.

Summary: this is a game we could--and should--win. Gotta clamp down on the usual suspects (Davies, David, Larin, Estaquiao, et al.) and limit their counterattacking chances.

I like this Canadian team and its coach. Herdman was brilliant in qualifying ... then he went and lost his mind during the '22 Cup. Not sure what that was about.

Btw, I'd wager @JNip's left testicle that Mexico sends very close to a full A side to the Gold Cup since it got pantsed by the USMNT in Nations League.

THE STADIUM:

Mexicans must have bought all of the tickets to the final, because the stadium looks like it is about 15% of capacity.

My guess is that stewards will walk around the upper deck and invite fans to move to the lower deck so that it looks better on TV.

He hurt his ARM.

It’s in a cast or something.

It would be shocking if it affects his speed this coming season at Fulham
