If my quick research is correct, should we win this series we will become only the third school to claim national championships in five of the big six sports - Football, women's volleyball, men's & women's basketball, baseball, softball.

We would be missing men's basketball.

We would join UCLA (missing women's basketball) and Stanford (missing, shockingly, softball).

Or another angle is it’s the only major sport they can compete in?   Barrier of entry is low.  Pay 1 gal a million and you’re good.  In football you’re paying a lot more

maybe there are others but softball is a really unique animal.  CTJ mentioned about overpaying for a dude in basketball being a tale as old as time.  Even one guy in basketball will have a tough time taking a team to an NC(see Cooper Flagg, Shaq, and a myriad of others).

in softball one pitcher can throw 3 games in a row on consecutive days and possibly win every game.  now there are fewer than 5 pitchers in college ball that can probably do that this year.  there is a fatigue factor but there is basically no pitch limit.  I can't think of another team sport where one player could change you from a middling top 30 team to a championship in one year

Tech went all in because women's softball is probably 5th now in the hierarchy of college sports on TV nationally? (I'm not counting regional stuff like hockey and lacrosse). what else are they going to do?  they will pay for basketball some(see Toppin)but do you think they will really open up for football and baseball given their history?  It's fairly cheap way to get eyeballs on Tech on ESPN in primetime.

Their volleyball and WBB is terrible. May as well pick something else and go for broke. Plus the uniqueness of a former player having that kind of financial pull via her spouse

Softball pitcher is second most important position in sports behind QB imo

As this one unfolds, watch what Canady does in high-stress situations. Down to one strike needed to close out OU, she gave up a tying 2-run HR to a #9 hitter with only two on the year. After being rattled by Hunter's foul bomb last night, she got in trouble and then failed to execute against Atwood. And as we know, she hit into a key DP in the first. So there might be a favorable trend here. Of course, we have to get her into stressful situations to start with.
