I haven't been this upset that I can recall. To have this happen, to a mother of three who just dropped her kid off (same age as my kid) and then have this happen, and then to have the admin COMPLETELY lie and gaslight the public and blame the woman is beyond me. I can't deal with this any more, but we're stuck. No easy way to move overseas.

I just sent a group chat to my family members (parents and grandparents mostly... obviously...) telling them to defend their vote in front of the family. Fucking OWN it.

Seeing this shit makes it much, MUCH easier to understand how people have become radicalized against America in other parts of the world where we just indiscriminately kill people, collateral damage be damned.

Did not go as hoped or even conceived. Apparently I am the black sheep of the family now. I just cannot comprehend it. One of those real "Jesus... am I the crazy one?" kind of moments to be that soundly rebuffed, and literally called a communist.

Thank god for my wife and son, but I feel really fucking alone right now.

I’m sorry you feel alone. At least there is a good community here.

And at some point there is going to be a line in the sand moment for more and more people. I’ve basically cut my circle down to 4 people or so. I have to keep one sister around out of guilt / respect to my father while he is still alive (and he’s not a Trumper) and I have to keep a guy that was a good friend for a long time around due to work.
Outside of that - I’m building a new community and keeping it small.

I get it, and it sucks. From the time that I became politically aware in the late 1980s, I've been the only progressive/liberal in my entire extended family, except for my ex-wife and daughter. Just stand your ground at family functions and ask that they respect your beliefs and to not discuss politics in your presence. If they don't, be hyper prepared to calmy defend your position. If they continue, you've got some choices to make about how much you want them in your life. By the time my dad died stupidly of Covid from not following precautions, I didn't have much of a relationship with him, but my mom was generally cool about our differences, especially after he died.

I feel you. I've got a huge extended family that I never kept up with too much after I moved away for school. My sister does though, and it sounds like they are about 90% Trumpy.

My wife, sister and brother are all fortunately on the right side of history, as are all of my friends, but my parents just can't seem to get it. I've tried avoiding politics with them, but I just can't any longer. They should be smart enough, and raised me in a way that would indicate they aren't callous enough to continue supporting this evil administration. Yet here we are...

My family knows/remembers that I was a Republican up until before we invaded Iraq in 2003, that I was a volunteer with George W's campaigns (and still have photos of me with him on Facebook) and that I flirted with libertarianism (also have a photo with Ron Paul lol) so they can't try and claim that I was some ranging liberal from birth.

I've been carefully picking my battles. I'm not a raging independent on Facebook (nor could I be construed as a raging liberal on there), and I'm just asking serious questions, while keeping it simple. I love asking why Trump and Bondi promised us the Epstein files and asking why Trump was in there so many times, because I know some of these people were big proponents of the release prior to last year. I've asked relatives why ICE is starting to pop up all over the place, when Rush Limbaugh warned us about this very thing. I've asked why we would attack our own NATO allies when that's what Putin would love. Not raging 30-minute debates, just keep it simple. I've even called out Trump as a draft-dodger who mocked POWs to a MAGA uncle who lost part of his leg in Vietnam, but I wasn't in his face about it.

Mixed results, but I'm going to be a fucking thorn in their sides about this.

It may not feel like it now, but over the long run you're likely going to be grateful for that freedom.

Yeah, that's generally my approach. I never bring up politics first, but when someone starts, I'm ready and stay calm, pointed, and precise. Unlike on here, I don't lose my cool or go off on rants.

I’ve quit talking to my niece, as she works for The Daily Wire and has become quite the bigoted bitch. Her mom texts me here and there, but we keep it surface level interactions about sports and our dad. I’m 99% sure after he dies, I won’t talk to her again.

I luckily have a younger sister and BIL who have the same values we do. We live a mile from each other and hangout often.

Man, I’m sorry to hear it. What we all need to realize is that we are already in a literal civil war. And war is fucking brutal on life, safety, family, and human existence. It’s horrific. What we are in right now involves horrors.

It involves a woman shot down in cold blood after dropping her kids off at school.

It involves people being cut off from their family because they’ve chosen absolute evil.

It involves the conversation we just had with our son before he leaves tomorrow, reminding him that if things get bad enough here, he is not to come back. He should seek asylum. There are many families already that will never see family members again because travel between our country and theirs is not allowed or safe. Who knows, each time I see my kid may be the last.

That is the reality of where we are. And I can’t tell you how much I hate the people who have made it this way.

I mentioned another one in another thread - I'll ask why he pardoned a guy who ran the largest online drug marketplace, or the Honduran President who was bringing in 400+ tons of cocaine. Or pardoned a guy that committed fraud that victimized thousands of people, who can't recover their losses because the pardon wiped it clean.

You absolutely can't treat them like they are posters on an internet forum. It's the little shit they can't defend - it might gnaw at them very little, but at the least, they can't defend it.

And I absolutely do not mention party, I talk specifically about Trump and a few people around him. I'll bring up Vance and his Thiel ties and I'll ask them to go look up Peter Thiel and his husband (Thiel Capital and BlackRock, and mention BlackRock's $13 Trillion in managed assets and ties to China's Army) and Palantir. The Palantir stuff has made some of them...weirded out to say the least. Or ask them that if Musk is such a great guy, why does he have 14 kids by 5 women, why does he argue with 12 year-olds late at night, why does he post creepy anime shit, etc.

There's ways to do this stuff without beating them over the head, and at least making them think a little, even if they revert back to MAGA.

Yep. The Vance-Thiel-Yarvin connection has been really effective on two GOP voting friends. It helps that they're both conspiratorially minded, which I knew and why I brought it up to them in separate conversations. I also let them know about the data collection that Elon and DOGE did. Both have come back to me after doing a bit of research and have said something to the effect of "That's some scary shit, man." What makes that a good one to bring up is that they go in knowing nothing and haven't been battered by endless talking points from all their shitty podcasts and Fox News. Also, it doesn't attack Trump directly but places strong doubts in their minds and nudges them to put pieces together on their own.

This isn't hard if you can keep your cool.

Edit: Also, be sure to mention Palantir and what they do and all the contracts they have. Add in that shiny globe thing, reminding them what it does in LOTR, is where that word comes from and they really start spinning.

Don’t sweat it. Nobody is going to change anything based on a shooting in a different state. That’s just not going to happen.

I hear ya. It took me some practice to get there when dealing with my family. The situation I don't want to put myself in is with protesting and seeing ICE or cops start fucking with people. I absolutely don't trust myself to keep my cool in that kind of situation.

this is me... but im not really finding it that difficult bc i've prioritized avoidance lol

mom passed in 2019 and i'll say it... i'm grateful, not that she's gone, but that i do not have to witness and she does not have to suffer what i am 100% sure would have happened to her during this entire decade, from covid on 😕

extended family is big and a mix of rural east Texas simple folk and UT/aggy grads with deep financial and political ties...all 'conservative'/maga. we've only seen each other at weddings and funerals for a couple decades, i will not be surprised once dad (78) and my last surviving aunt (90) are gone if we never see any of them again. they are not, as they say, my people, and i've never lost any sleep over it and neither have they lol.

ngl, leaving Texas made avoidance a thousand times easier. and my algorithm is pretty void of any politics - animals, music, nature, cooking, and GRWMs bc they're fun, shut up.

really... it's just my dad 💔 i do think he's wrestling with his amygdala. he's become very involved in local philanthropy and the past year has been eye-opening for him, he's unironically talked about it 🙄. he has said outright he does not like Trump. but...he voted for him, almost certainly all three times. give him a few drinks and the ugly starts coming out. and he still shares god awful shit on fb which i just chose to ignore. but our family is very small, and in general he's outnumbered 4 to 1, and we are also all he has, so for the most part we all manage to just avoid topic(s). and i personally do not drink with him, ever.

we all just have to make the call. some of y'all with larger families and kids and whatnot, y'all have a lot more on the line and i really feel for you. i've had a loving but conflicted relationship with both parents since my youth. i'm not afraid to confront directly when pushed, and i'm not particularly sentimental which helps. also, no kids is the best decision i've ever made.

at least this lady can say she knows what she would have done in 1930s germany.

I'm sorry. Just know you are not alone. I had lunch with my family yesterday and had a similar experience.

Just remember, your values haven't changed over the last 10 years. These other people have to twist and morph themselves into something very ugly to believe and support this bullshit. It is disheartening, but stay strong.

I just had a conversation with maga FIL about the California billionaire tax proposal, which I didn’t even know about until he brought it up last night. Weird how much Texans care about California. Anyway, after researching I found out it would only affect about 200 people.

His response was, “yeah, and those 200 people will move out and not create jobs in California anymore.”

Me: “So you still believe in trickle down economics?”

“Well, they are all coming to Texas and giving us jobs, so I’ll take it!”

This then devolved into red vs blue migration and education levels in rural vs urban areas. He extricated himself from the conversation before it could get too heated and I also felt my blood pressure rising, so probably a good thing.

I just can’t deal with it when I realize I’m talking to a Fox News propaganda machine instead of a human being.

Not sure why you're getting into the weeds on education and housing. Every question should be probing him on when and why he began to support child rapists and turn a blind eye to child rape.

Don’t tell him that California is the fourth largest economy in the world. We alright

I’ve compared taxes, expenses and all that shit with my FIL in San Diego and I promise my cost of living in Austin is higher. It’s unbelievable that people still fall for this shit.
