I’m assuming it’s another pitcher. Still some dead weight there.

Or, maybe Jayden wants a starting spot somewhere else.

What are our total scholarship numbers now? I know we're going 34 in baseball according to CDC. What is number of pitchers on scholarship vs positional players on roster?

I'd assume you'd want roughly  1/3 to 1/2 your roster being pitchers?

Probably want to go:

9 positional starters including DH

2 back up catchers

2-3 extra OF

3 extra IF

Rest are pitchers

1/2 is more like the minimum

Yep. I’d imagine so. Much easier to move around a position player than get stuck without extra pitchers of a certain type.

Makes sense...

1b, 2b, SS, 3b, C, LF, CF, RF, DH(9)
Middle Infield backups(2)
Corner Infield backups(2)
Backup catchers(2)
Outfield backups(4)
Utility Guy(1?)
Fri-Sun Pitchers(3)
Bullpen(10)
Closer Type(1-2?)

I would have my eye on someone like Navarre, considering the lefty arms we've brought in.

The roster numbers are going to be a mess for a few years because of all the grandfather rules for guys that signed prior to the house settlement. You can also designate guys as dudes who would have been cut, and I'm pretty sure they don't count against the 34-man limit for Texas or any school they transfer to (think dudes like Duplantier, etc.).

Yep, I agree. My thought was neither Moffett nor Navarre would make it past the portal close without leaving, and one of those has already happened.

Edit: Lol, welp...

I know it's the age of pay to play and that lowers the threshold for criticism but I'm still not one to criticize college athletes like professionals but that said, there's not a single guy on that list that I wished was staying. not one.

While we are at it, Easton Winfield was maybe the worst defensive outfielder I've ever seen at Texas.

Did you see Tommy Farmer personally cost us at least one game by dropping two balls that were in his glove when he ran into the fence?

He also saved our ass several other times with outstanding catches.

Winfield had 2-3 different instances where he dropped routine fly balls 100 feet in front of the fence, and also had a noodle arm.

In this vain, I will say that Lil' Nigel played quite a bit against several players on the roster this past season.  Two were good at 15-16 but didn't really develop past that, and two were players where we just never saw it.  All of them were head scratchers to us and all 4 will not be on the roster next season.  I have said on here plenty of times that Schloss is a relentless recruiter and a good judge of talent historically.  The differences we saw between Schloss and Pierce were stark.

Let me guess:  dads standing around a BYOB ballgame tailgate waiting on players to get out, and at some point the other team's middle reliever comes up in conversation soon followed by "THAT kid got a scholarship to Texas?"

Let’s not play both sides of the fence here. You want to implicate all of them rather just the 4.  Who are the players you know?

Yes, you’ve said that multiple times about Schloss.  Most fans that care about that sort of thing are likely well informed and know that going back to TCU Schloss has found and/or developed talent.  You could argue that once he got established at TCU there’s been better talent at TCU than Texas.  If you were to use MLB as the measuring stick.

If I’m interpreting 64 analytics properly, Tennessee has had 19 guys enter the portal.  And I see a recent article from the Knoxville News that kicks it up to 22.  LSU and UGa last year were at 14 and 15, respectively.  These are amongst the best rosters in the country.  I’d presume they are at or near the top of the NIL food chain.  All these guys are not leaving due to the lack of natural ability.  They also aren’t all leaving because they’re supremely talented.  Teams are churning 25 to 33% of their roster.  I’d wager even the best have similar guys to those you reference.

Do you even new roster limits bro? This was obviously going to create chaos. The reality is we may see the last class of freshman come onto campus unless they are truly elite. Freshman recruiting classes will dwindle and the teams without solid nil will end up being feeder schools for the haves. Moose out front and all that.

Roster limits or not this is the likely outcome for a number of programs.  It’s probably more NIL/portal than roster limits.  It’s the Saban methodology.  Sign and churn the roster with churn being even easier due to the portal.

The Texas 2026 commit list shows 21 players.  I can’t imagine there’s close to 21 of those guys on the roster come spring 27.  There’s 17 for 2025.  Yes, I’d expect the freshman numbers to dwindle at some point.
