after 4 games

Rushing yard leaders

  • Gibson 155
  • Manning 123
  • Simon 117
  • Clark 115

Who had that after 4 games? Need to get our 1st team RBs healthy

Nice having DeAndre Moore back as well. Made a difference in the passing game Saturday.

Do y'all think we'd recruit Shipley if he had too many kicks blocked at TXST due to a low trajectory? How many were blocked last year?

I don't know, I don't have a fucking encyclopedic knowledge of Texas State football statistics for 2024. I do feel like it's safe to say that Shipley will consistently be playing taller, faster, more athletic players this season than he did last year, who can potentially do things like jump higher with longer arms.

True, but I've gotta believe we have technology that can assess things like trajectory and velocity on kicks. Similar to a golf monitor. Surely, Banks looked into those metrics too. Right?

I just want to see more of Simon. No idea if he sucks in pass pro, but he has been the most impressive RB for me this season. Ill be the first to admit it is a small sample size, but I would like to see if it is more than just that.

I'm not confident in making that assumption based on what we've seen from Banks over the last couple of years.

Simon has gotta lead the RBs in both YPC and YAC thus far, right? No, I didn't look it up yet.

Wisner is #1 with 5.0, which is sad. (The 5.0 being sad. After 3 cupcakes, you would hope multiple people would be up around 6)

And Wisner’s one game was Ohio State.

vs light boxes that led to 0 scores. So YIPPEEE!!!

I have Simon so high, because he had 67 yards after contact and 5 broken tackles in his debut vs UTEP. That was impressive, since he had 17 carries for 67 yards.

I'm not as down on the run game as y'all are. Maybe I'm being naive, but Clark and Gibson seem improved since last week. Wisner and Baxter are known quantities and good RBs, if somewhat limited. Simon looks to be the next bellcow.

Run blocking needs to improve but getting Stroh off the line will probably help with that. I can see a lineup with Hutson at RG and Robertson at C being what we need to finally have the OL all on the same page.

They're still weak at the point of attack and lack any kind of push in clear running situations. But that's the same shit as the last several seasons. And our running was more or less fine. Not elite, but good enough to win and make the CFP.

I guess what I'm saying is the ceiling is still limited, but the floor is higher than I thought it would be after last week.

Clark definitely ran the plays how they're supposed to be run and blocked, IMO. Not as much hesitation. Of course, the holes were bigger and easier to see too.

Gibson seemed to run thru contact better with more lean.

In what world is OU's offense way ahead of ours? They've looked pretty bad in their games, and that's with their QB playing well and not having the yips.

Right now that game is a toss up. Depends on which Arch shows up, and which team can decently run it.

We actually average more per game than they do on offense now. Granted they get Kent State soon, so that should help their averages across the board.  They did need the refs help against Auburn to around 20 points to barely survive a team without a QB.

Waiting to see Clark's lateral cutting ability to show up in missed tackles. He seems to go down at first contact. You can see his cutting ability but waiting to see it translate.

Yeah, I don't remember seeing any jump cuts from him against SHSU. At least he's running the plays correctly now.

I don't think we can take much, at all, away from the SHSU game. They're horrendous.

Otherwise, it was nice to see Arch not bouncing passes all over the place.

That's been pointed out to me a couple of times. I guess expecting a coach to do his due diligence on an important player is asking too much. Measureables like launch angle for kicks are probably beyond his grasp.

We should definitely have a special teams coordinator considering there is no limit to coaches now.

I thought the same thing when watching SNF last night, and they were showing Kansas City’s ST Coordinator.

”Why can’t we do that too?”

Nah, I'd go with Simon unless you're in 3rd & long and need a RB for max protect. Blue wasn't good at blocking, either. I hope the kid has good hands. I see he's caught 2 passes for a whopping 2 yards, total.

I am clearly on the Simon band wagon for now. He shows excellent vision running zone, he always falls forward, and has broken more tackles than any other RB on the year (at least that was the case coming into the SHSU game). He seems to be the most versatile of the RBs, not names Wisner and Baxter. Blocking could move Gibson above him.

I think I phrased the point poorly. I'm aware that Schloss isn't calling shots when it comes to Texas football.

Sark knows that the kid is dual-sport and probably treats him as a football player accordingly. I guarantee Schloss would say something if Jonah got thrown out there for punt duties - whether or not it's his decision at the end of the day.

Schloss’ opinion of what Sark does with a football/baseball player is inconsequential. Schloss isn’t calling Sark about it, and is going to do whatever the fuck he wants, and he should.

Listened to the Sunday Sirius XM show this AM driving back to Dallas.  Not much horns talk obviously but they didn't give Arch or the horns much credit for the blowout given the opponent which is fair.  But then went on to say how Texas will be fortunate to win one of their next 2.  Talked about how Florida is really solid on D and will be tough for us to score in the Swamp.  Then talked about how much better OU and Mateer is offensively than Texas is and how OU should be favored.  I don't take exception to any of those points independently.  But they did not say a single word about the Texas defense.  It's kind of amazing how from the national perspective the only story is Arch and our offense (and we've pretty much been written off given the struggles) and everyone has somehow forgotten we have an elite defense.

If we handle Florida, and I expect a blowout, we will be a 5-7 point favorite over OU. With a win of any kind in Gainesville, we will be a favorite in Dallas. Because Vegas isn’t moronic.

It amazes me how absolute anyone can be after the very beginning of a season, much less every sports media member. What I saw this weekend was an exorcism for Arch, who very much needed one, and the opponent did not matter.  I also saw the struggle of a better-than-expected OU squad over a marginal Auburn squad.

I disagree with the notion that we can't learn anything about a team in a game against an opponent like SHSU.

Arch was able to throw a 60 yard pass in stride. He was able to throw a 25 yard pass between the linebacker and safety. He was able to accurately place the 10 yard hitch off the rpo.  These are things we needed to see before the bye. They are also things that translate in any game.

If the whole game was Arch completing low, inaccurate passes to wide open receivers like on the first drive, I'd get it. But I'd say we saw an improved version of Arch versus a cupcake from what we saw against UTSA and ULM last year, which is what you would have expected before the trainwreck start.

Did Neto not play at all? Truly bizarre if not, he's looked fairly capable when he's been in there. Feels like there's a solid OL in here somewhere, but not sure they've found the right combo yet. I feel pretty good about Goosby, Campbell and Baker.

62.4 grade vs SHSU. I have given up hope he will ever be seen again. 25 snaps

I would hope the bare minimum would be during practice they set up obstructions with close to a worse case scenario - a 6'-8" lineman's typical vertical leap that has penetrated 2 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

hell, soccer teams have these.

Disagree. I think OU will enter the game as a favorite no matter what happens. With all of the national media bullshit about Arch over the last two weeks, every talking head on the planet is going to say that Mateer is the better QB in this game even if he balls out at Florida, and hence will be the favorite. They are going to look at 10 sacks versus Auburn and think that their defense is more disruptive. It is lazy analysis, but that will drive the opening lines.

Yes, he looks good as well.  What I find encouraging about Gibson is that when the play is blown up 3 gang tacklers cannot get him on the ground.  His fucking legs looks like tree trunks too.  Can we put super glue on his gloves so he won’t fumble?  Kidding…sort of.

it's Vegas, the line ultimately is dispassionately set by the betting action.

I got to see the game live from my perch high above the North endzone with the rest of the poor but faithful.

I wanted to take a win as a given, and to try and watch critically. I was happy to see us put the defense out on the field first, and of course, the defense did exactly what we've come to expect.

When Texas got the ball, my stomach sank as Arch promptly did what we're used to from him. His feet were happy. He jittered around. He tossed passes at odd arm angles. One hit the OL and was lucky to be incomplete instead of a short-field INT. The OL put the offense behind the sticks with penalties. The usual.

Arch then started with baby steps. His passes hit stationary receivers in the knees. They were able to grab them for 1st downs. Then, he was hitting receivers in the hands on curl routes. Small flats. Easy outs. He tried one deep out (right hash to far left boundary) and sailed it 3 feet wide. Came back and hit the same out perfectly. Moved on to crossers. Hit moving targets in front in the hands. Slants on time and in rhythm. He was largely moving through the WR passing tree.

Coming out of halftime, was the 9 route to Wingo. A little uncertain, but took the correctly necessary crow-hop to fling a ball that went directly over 1's shoulder into the basket (Wingo's gotta start grabbing passes with hands and not body them). Directly after, he relied on instinct to smash a quick slant fastball to Wingo as pressure got home. Touchdown.

Yeah, it's a sample size of one, against one of the weakest teams in FBS. However, the opponent didn't cause the struggles over the last 2 games. Arch can clearly do the job when he stays out of his own head.

Just saw an article about the Cotton Bowl spruce up being completed. Not too bad tbh, but my expectations weren't sky high because of the price.

This means we're mudholing the cheating gooners this year, right?
