Greatest year.  Not just at the top, but the bottom has films fun to watch coming up on a century old.

I’d choose 2026 so I can see something new.

I’m not a big fan of watching movies over and over. There is probably no movie I’ve seen more than 5 times and probably less than a dozen that I’ve seen twice.

I’ll catch Project Hail Mary and whatever else comes out next year while you guys reminisce.

I think you missed the entire point of the thread. Sure, go ahead and pick 2026 so you can see something "new". Then you're stuck with 2026 movies for the rest of your life. What if PHM is the only decent flick in '26? Then you just fucked yourself.

Better than the year you suggested.

Sure, if you're a 12 year old Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fanboy.

Gotta have OG Star Wars so for better or worse, 1977 is my year.

The most memorable of that year:

Star Wars

Close Encounters

A Bridge Too Far

Saturday Night Fever

Eraserhead

Smokey and the Bandit

Annie Hall

The Spy Who Loved Me

Slap Shot

Airport '77

The Kentucky Fried Movie

Still waiting on your list. Will it include Bob Newhart?

Hmmm well, if you have to stick in the line of logic I'd argue Empire Strikes Back was a better film and in 1980 you also get:

The Shining

Airplane

Raging Bull

The Blues Brothers

Fame

Ordinary People

Brubaker

The Dogs of War

American Gigalo

Altered States

Stir Crazy

Where the Buffalo Roam

9 to 5

The God's Must be Crazy

Friday the 13th

The Elephant Man (David Lynch directing Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt and Anne Bankcroft)

There is also the Blue Lagoon which I never saw and honestly just looking at the quick plot summary... I never knew they were cousins. I knew they were both teens.. that um... yeah that plot aged very, very poorly.

ERRONEOUS!!

And I mean it's not logic, it's opinion.  As much as i like Empire, I still prefer Star Wars.  It's my favorite movie of all time.

So 1977 is still my year.  Feel free to choose 1980 if you so desire.

Nah, you can have either. I'll stick with 1994 or 1999. Lots more I enjoy re-watching.

And Blade Runner is better than either anyway. That's the fact, Jack!

1984 movies were iconic for a young F250 as they showed up on HBO several years later during my middle school years.

Conan the Destroyer: Olivia D'Abo's boobs.

Bachelor Party: Nude sloots.

The Woman in Red: Kelly Le Brock's bush.

Blame it on Rio: Jesus, that was a spanking festival movie.

Hardbodies: Fap time

Hot Dog the Movie: Fap time

God y’all are so young….

1939 is the greatest year in film history and it is not even close.

Look it up.

That's not the point.  The full 1939 film catalog would pale in comparison to any of the last several decades.  How many of those 1939 films are rewatchable?  Sure, you get to watch a handful of the best films ever made, but that is all you get, and they are dated.  I want films I can watch over and over, many of which are total crap if evaluated critically.  I just want to be entertained, have a good variety of genres, and rewatch some of my personal favorites, even if they are pure shit.

There have been some really solid years offered, with countless films that I wouldn't hesitate to repeatedly watch.  Here are a couple of others that I would personally consider.

2003

  • Oldboy
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
  • Memories of Murder
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  • School of Rock
  • Mystic River
  • Love Actually
  • Old School
  • Lost in Translation
  • Holes
  • Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
  • The Last Samurai
  • Matchstick Men
  • The Station Agent
  • Elf
  • Open Range
  • Intolerable Cruelty
  • Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
  • Capturing the Friedmans
  • Girl with a Pearl Earring
  • Seabiscuit

1996

  • Happy Gilmore
  • A Time to Kill
  • Twister
  • Fargo
  • Scream
  • Independence Day
  • Mission: Impossible
  • Trainspotting
  • Jerry Maguire
  • The English Patient
  • Sling Blade
  • Phenomenon
  • Swingers
  • That Thing You Do!
  • Bottle Rocket
  • Big Night
  • Star Trek: First Contact
  • Secrets & Lies
  • Tin Cup
  • Waiting for Guffman
  • Beautiful Girls
  • The Daytrippers
  • When We Were Kings

Quite a few, that's what made it a special year.  2003 was also a special year, I recall Ebert saying so.  But we will need to wait 50 more years to test the quality.

I have seen most of the celebrated films from 1939 more than once, so I suppose that you technically have a point.  Nonetheless, I never find myself scouring TCM for guilty pleasure viewing options, and would definitely not want to be limited to that year's offerings if forced to choose.  There simply aren't enough films from that year that resonate with me and many of my viewing moods would be missed entirely.  I enjoy an occasional visit to Hollywood's golden era, but I would not want to live there for eternity.
