Quick we need another post about F-15s

“Outsized weapons is the nomenclature we use right now,” adds Lt. Col. Joe Gagnon, commander of the 85th TES. “We need aircraft that can carry outsized weapons that don’t require an internal carriage capability, and right now our best platform for that is the Strike Eagle and the F-15EX. If you’re thinking about hypersonics, things like that, one of the platforms most likely is going to be an Eagle, because it’s the big airplane that can carry it and not have to carry it internally.”

“What the F-15EX brings that other F-15s do not is what you hear being talked about as the digital backbone of the aircraft,” adds Maj. Eshkenazi. “It has ethernet wiring running throughout the airframe and it’s linked to the weapon stations. This opens up future potential in terms of integrating weapons. We might have a separate computer or a tablet that can be linked [to the jet] that allows us to connect to the weapons stations while keeping our safety of flight elements [in the mission software] isolated. So we could run apps but not have them running through our main computer, which isolates this from the safety of flight things like the flight controls, for example. This means I’m not concerned about an app coming from a vendor that might affect my ability to fly the airplane.”

“One of the big capabilities that the F-15EX brings to the fight is the ability to rapidly put new weapons on it, because of its external carriage capacity and its ability to carry a lot of weight,” Col. Daniel Lehoski, 53rd Wing commander, further explained. “We have the independent ability to upgrade the jet’s Operational Flight Program [OFP] as well as actually working around the OFP to add some capabilities. I’ll give you an example; we have a jet that we’re using to push situational awareness and command and control [C2] capabilities to the leading edge of the fight. We’re doing that literally with an iPad hooked up to the jet in order to get information into it. That sits outside the OFP. It’s a little clunky because you have an iPad in the cockpit, but that is enabling us to add capability in conjunction with our agile OFP upgrades. The iPad is getting power from the jet and then using Link 16 datalink to communicate with the aircraft.”

“We are bringing in other sources of information to the jet other than what’s provided by the radar and the other sensors. We’ve already added an external antenna to the jet, and it’s pretty straightforward because we don’t have to worry about the radar signature and outer mold line of the design.”

I’m not owned or crying about anything pal. You’re aligning yourself with a guy that claims Israel has no outside threat, just 9.5 months after Hamas killed 1300 Israelis and would’ve killed all 10 million if it could, as it (and many other groups) repeatedly state. That’s about as dumb a comment as has ever appeared here. But I’m “owned”. Fucking clown show man.

Evidence is mounting in support of the Rex is illiterate theory.

Explain how Israel has no existential threats aside from its internal right wing. Would love to hear this.

None of the external threats it currently faces has the ability to threaten its ability to exist. The most dire existential threat is from within right now.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination but suspicion immediately fell on Israel, which has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other leaders of Hamas over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage.

Iran’s statement gave no details on how Haniyeh was killed.

Iranian state television reported on his death early Wednesday, and analysts immediately began blaming Israel for the attack.

Israel itself did not immediately comment but it often doesn’t when it comes to assassination carried out by their Mossad intelligence agency.

Israel is suspected of running a yearslong assassination campaign targeting Iranian nuclear scientists and others associated with its atomic program.

In its campaign since, Israel has killed more than 39,360 Palestinians and wounded more than 90,900, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, whose count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

I figured it was wildcat or Aggie that was gonna say this. This is bullshit. I do agree that with most existential threats, the IDF / Iron Dome can sustain them, and if not, the US will lend support.  But they’re surrounded by hostile states.  They’re a tiny country.  If they can be surprised by a ragtag Hamas, what’s to stop Iran via Lebanon from a major attack?  In combination with that, what’s to stop a coordinated attack from many countries like in the 60s and 70s?  I suspect a lot can and would stop it, but to assert there are no external existential threats is absurd.  This isn’t the US - we absolutely are the only ones that can destroy us (and we will).  Israel is the exact antithesis of having a geographic advantage like the US.  They’re like Rome in 400 AD except much much more tiny.

Though, I do agree the manner with which Israel has conducted itself in the aftermath of October 7 is inviting more future attacks.

Also, wildcat didn’t qualify this.

Well, I don't think any of those other threats are currently existential, maybe at points in the past and perhaps at points in the future, but not right now. That doesn't mean they couldn't do damage. Just that Israel on its own would eventually beat them and that's before accounting for US support, which would be overwhelming.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is assassinated in Tehran

BEIRUT (AP) — Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said early Wednesday, and Hamas blamed Israel for the attack.

Israel has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other leaders of Hamas over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage.

An Israeli military spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Israel often doesn’t when it comes to assassinations carried out by their Mossad intelligence agency.

Hamas said Haniyeh was killed “in a Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of Iran’s new president.”

Zero problem with decapitation targeting Hamas leadership. Certainly better than the genocide and ethnic cleansing play we’ve been watching. There will be ramifications wrt ceasefire talks though. Haniyeh was one of hamas’ lead negotiators. How much that may have played into the assassination who knows. Probably just taking the shot since he was  vulnerable and outside of Qatar.

I thought the hold up was:

Hamas wants to exist after a removal of troops and hostage release.

Israel insists Hamas cannot exist after a removal of troops and hostage release.

My understanding is that the Israeli position has broad popular support in Israel.

I see an argument for depth of support against Netanyahu. I don’t see an argument against breadth of support against his negotiating goal.

If you want to argue that eliminating Hamas altogether is an unrealistic goal, well, that would be an interesting discussion. It’s not going to get anyone closer to peace, though, nor the Palestinians any closer to a state.

The protestors in Israel are literally protesting the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of his negotiations. If you read the Haaretz article I linked, the perception within Israel is that Netanyahu continually torpedoes these negotiations for his own personal gain. I'm not sure how you glean that somehow this is about him as a person and not about his "negotiation goals".

The snag we're hitting here is that Netanyahu's "negotiation" basically boils down to demanding that Hamas hand over all hostages, and then kill itself. Of course, that would be fantastic for all involved, but it's entirely unrealistic because no one would ever agree to those terms. It's so insanely irrational as to be intentionally obstructive, which is why the families of the hostages, and many many more within Israel, think that he's simply stalling for personal gain.

Again, this all circles back around to the fact that Bibi needs to stay in power to stay out of prison. It's an inarguable fact that people continue to try and ignore for reasons that I cannot fathom, as if it's not incredibly relevant to how he handles this war.

Not that I don’t agree with Israel’s goal (elimination of Hamas), but it’s ummm, a tough negotiation point. “Hey…my negotiation stance is that you have to kill yourself” is never going to bear fruit.
A ceasefire is something different than a full surrender. But here we are.

I think Hamas’ planned negotiation was: “we’ll trade hostages for prisoners, let’s say at the rate of a a couple hundred of ours for every one of yours. Then, we’ll pretend it’s October 6 again”.

I’m sure a lot of Israelis miss October 6. Here’s the thing about October 6- October 7 is just around the corner. I can see why so many of the Israelis see that as a non-starter.

No it’s 100% Bibi. Lulz at the notion that Hamas is the reasonable negotiation actor here. Hamas will find no shelter. If I’m in charge, I tell them “you can return all hostages and surrender, and we’ll cease firing. Or, not return all hostages and there’s no ceasefire.”

They can infer from that what they will, but their lives are all over, as they should be. Either they surrender and they’ll be in prison, or continue to not agree to our terms, and we’ll kill you all. If they don’t like that, then they should’ve thought twice about 10/7.

Who is saying Hamas is the reasonable actor here? No one here is going to disagree with what you're saying here.

It's the people within Israel and the families of the hostages that think Bibi is purposefully obstructing the deal. That notion didn't come out of thin air. That's why we're seeing massive protests within Israel right now plus the Jewish Voice for Peace protest, etc. It's not American Libruls or whatever other bogeyman you're making up in your head.

Caveat here because of the sensitive topic: the Israeli government. I’m not claiming anyone is an anti-Semite or supports terrorists. I have said so as hyperbole before and it’s gotten me into trouble.

Of course, the happy secondary impact is that he was one of the chief negotiators and foreign relations reps involved with the ceasefire talks.

Nothing wrong with empathy. You’re wasting everyone’s time attempting to understand what Hamas thinks, though.

You don't think it's important to understand the motivations of your enemy? I try to understand Hamas' motivations as the enemy as much as I try to understand the Israeli government's as the ally.

As much as I despise Netanyahu, he's not a stupid man, he knows that he is offering terms that the enemy can never accept. He also knows that the most extreme members of his coalition (a la Bezalel Smotrich, Itamar Ben-Gvir,, etc) have openly declared that they will bring his government down from the inside if a ceasefire agreement is ever reached. He is staring down the double barrel threats of the extremists within his government, and the three outstanding criminal cases within Israeli courts that he will face once and very likely go to prison once he is no longer in power.

It is completely crazy to dismiss what we know to be true right in front of our eyes when analyzing the situation. I literally cannot fathom why you and others around here continually dismiss Netanyahu's darker motivations and the multiple Swords of Damocles that hang over his head as if they are irrelevant to the moves he makes in this war.

This is NOT what I'm saying, and if you were capable of analyzing any situation or anyone's motivations beyond the superficial, you would understand that. Fucking OBVIOUSLY Hamas is a bad actor here as well, that goes without saying, and everyone here fucking knows that you imbecile.

What I was saying was that many, many people now consider Netanyahu's negotiations to be purposefully irrational in order to obstruct any possibility of a ceasefire so the war can continue indefinitely (as described above). He is essentially offering Hamas terms that effectively boil down to "release the hostages and then kill yourself." Yeah, that would be great if it happened, but no one on Earth would ever accept those terms, and Bibi knows that.
