  4. lol Kane missed that pk on purpose
  5. I guess this is the best active thread for this. Using AI to monitor kids’ online text/speech is being abused. Of course, I understand concern on the other side of the argument, but the big, bolded last sentence quoted below (there's more at the link) is a broad societal problem, imo. Normalizing Big Brother shit. Let's train the next generation to "watch what they say." Yeah, that's not an original sentiment or statement, but I don't get why we're putting up with all of this stuff, as it's increasingly being spread throughout all aspects of our lives and disturbs my libertarian nature, in the free speech and civil liberties sense. It's not really an AI issue per se, except for how the tech can be abused, which I guess you could argue is the whole AI problem thing. https://apnews.com/article/ai-school-surveillance-gaggle-goguardian-bark-8c531cde8f9aee0b1ef06cfce109724a Lesley Mathis knows what her daughter said was wrong. But she never expected the 13-year-old girl would get arrested for it. The teenage girl made an offensive joke while chatting online with her classmates, triggering the school’s surveillance software. Before the morning was even over, the Tennessee eighth grader was under arrest. She was interrogated, strip-searched and spent the night in a jail cell, her mother says. Earlier in the day, her friends had teased the teen about her tanned complexion and called her “Mexican,” even though she’s not. When a friend asked what she was planning for Thursday, she wrote: “on Thursday we kill all the Mexico’s.” Mathis said the comments were “wrong” and “stupid,” but context showed they were not a threat. “It made me feel like, is this the America we live in?” Mathis said of her daughter’s arrest. “And it was this stupid, stupid technology that is just going through picking up random words and not looking at context.” Surveillance systems in American schools increasingly monitor everything students write on school accounts and devices. Thousands of school districts across the country use software like Gaggle and Lightspeed Alert to track kids’ online activities, looking for signs they might hurt themselves or others. With the help of artificial intelligence, technology can dip into online conversations and immediately notify both school officials and law enforcement. Educators say the technology has saved lives. But critics warn it can criminalize children for careless words. “It has routinized law enforcement access and presence in students’ lives, including in their home,” said Elizabeth Laird, a director at the Center for Democracy and Technology.
  6. Your mom was Bill Cosby‘s plug
  7. I wonder how big it's going to be because Serrano's was small, at least the seating area was. The new place will be enclosed from what I've read. Catherdrale has also closed, so maybe they're combining the spots.
  8. I get where you're coming from. I often feel the same way about you as a poster on this site.
  9. "Life like hair and beard." Shit, half of the Surly posters would KILL for that. Also, reminds me of the sex toy etc. catalog we got at our house in college. Someone had ordered a blow up sex doll as a party prop (yes, we were degenerates). Once you place such an order, you get on the mailing list, catalogs show up. We get one, and paging through it, get to the section on artificial vaginas/pocket pussy devices. And one of them has a graphic on the ad that looks like this.... Except instead of "new and improved," it says "NOW FEATURING REAL HAIR!" First....dear lord, the 80s were a dark time in so many ways. Second...I couldn't stop laughing at the idea of some board meeting of the Acme Sex Toy company, where they were gathered around the board table, and a guy was griping "sales of our pocket vaginas are flat. We just aren't moving product, there's no enthusiasm or buzz for it." Then Jenkins, the new marketing guy, pops up in his chair -- "I'VE GOT IT. Hear me out, fellas....two words....'REAL. HAIR.'" Long pause, then the chairman smiles -- "Jenkins, you're a GENIUS!"
  10. sure it wasn't just the Pittsburgh baseball team?
  11. Um, what show is this and why am I not watching?
  12. Hope it works out for the young man.
  13. Looked off Boooo. No var in a friendly.
  14. Not one of those guys would take a job that reports to a guy like Nagy, but the bigger overall issue is that a coach needs money to win big and OU just doesn't have it. There is no cavalry coming.
  15. Loved Serrano’s back in the day, but this is a massive upgrade. If Dishoom takes off in NYC I’m expecting a Vegas expansion as well…
  16. Sounds like something a furry would post on a message board.
  17. Am resisting making Beaver jokes.
  18. Is he new to the internet? Also, is someone paying him to do this shit?
  19. Sure, if we hold an actual election, and it's not called off because of some "emergency." Every single thing I can do in defiance of the regime, I will. But I have no illusions that my vote will be counted, that it will matter in the big picture, etc. There are 100 different plays to make elections not happen/be irrelevant. And the GQP is running every one of those plays simultaneously.
