  1. Past hour
  2. Imports are not subtracted from GDP. C, I, and G all have some amount of imports counted in them, so those imports are subtracted to remove them from C, I, and G. Which is why imports is on that side of the equation.
  3. I was listening to Joel Klatt’s podcast, where he was discussing the game with Urban Meyer. Klatt is great- a sharp guy, open about his recovery, enthusiastic about the college game. Meyer came across as weird, like he wasn’t relating to Klatt as a human. Klatt would offer up leading questions, giving Meyer opportunities to wax about past teams and players, and Meyer never bit. Every anecdote was about something Meyer did or said, and the only players’ names were said by Klatt. We know Meyer’s history- he assembled a talented and powerful Florida squad, and was dismayed to see that he had a bunch of bad guys. He dealt with the problem he created by leaving. Arguably, the Florida program never recovered. (I understand that Texas made a serious run at Meyer in 2020). Is Meyer a sociopath? Or does he just have a few sociopathic tendencies? Football coaches, like Army Drill Instructors, see the drilling of young men to and past physical pain as part of the job. I decided to see how many coaches I could place in a list of sociopaths. Art Briles came up next, of course. He built a great team that had a culture building rite of passage where they would roofie a coed and then gang rape her. When he learned of this, his main concern was not getting caught and keeping guys eligible. To this day, he asserts he did nothing wrong. (Baylor still won’t reveal all they know). Switzer had a team blow up under criminals scandal, but I see him as more of a narcissist (which, I understand psychiatrists don’t define as a clinical disorder like they used to?) than a sociopath. Switzer spends too much time in image maintenance, and efforts to convince others that he’s not a bad guy. Meyer and Briles don’t really seem to give a shit what any of us think. Jackie Sherrill is a really weird dude, but he never had the (human) scandal the others did. He was unconstrained by ethics, was happy to create a fantasy image for himself out of made up stories, but the only human wreckage seems to be horrorscape of his psyche. Paterno will come up, because of the awful shit that Sandusky did, and he covered up for, but I don’t see him as the same type of weirdo. As I read his story, around 1999, the evidence that his right hand assistant was a monster had piled up so high that it couldn’t be ignored and he retired him. His main sins were supporting a coverup (thereby allowing Sandusky to continue to prey). I see Paterno as more of a cautionary tale- the guy who really wants to be a good guy, but who allows personal weakness and vanity to turn himself into a bad guy. Am I missing any?
  4. Outstanding, powerful, and enraging. It brought back some strong memories of that weekend as half the guys in my OG fantasy football league are from New Orleans and had evacuated to Austin for our draft after Katrina made landfall and we were all following the news and checking in on their families elsewhere as we're drinking beers and shit talking each pick. Little did we know what was to come after our draft ended because that was the time the media was reporting that the worst had past and New Orleans was in clean up mode. Fortunately most of them are white and well-off so they were mostly spared the horrors that hit the poor and working class neighborhoods of New Orleans. Fuck Bush, fuck Ray Nagin, fuck Michael Brown and God bless Gen. Russell Honore.
  5. It's not a boogyman. The DAs office seems to pick certain cases to parade in front of the public, while the rest get quietly pled down or outright dismissed. It's a combination of incompetence and malice. Look at how the Perry case went down. They've withheld evidence, outright refused FOIA requests for the case data to numerous researchers, and redacted critical evidence that would have led to Perry's freedom, but Jose needed that signature win to plaster on his campaign billboard. Again, he came in full bore talking about prosecuting police officers, while letting repeat felons walk out the front door time and time again. At one point you could call it a coincidence, but when it's a systemic problem as it is now, it's no longer a manufactured storyline, it's an actual issue.
  6. What is a wheelie bin?
  7. My bet is that donald JAIL trump would support this idea only so he could sell the plans to Putin.
  8. Wyoming/Akron at 6 may actually be fun too, but it’s ESPN+.
  9. I think that is entirely wrong and fundamentally misguided. I have the benefit of viewing this drama from the perspective of a non-Cowboys fan. I was a Cowboys fan in the early 90's for those two Super Bowls, but hiring the Football Antichrist killed it for me. Moving the team to Tarrant County put it in the ground. Marrying a New Yorker shoveled dirt on the coffin (Go Giants!). But regardless of whatever time I may support, the purpose of the Dallas Cowboys (and the New York Giants and the NFL as a whole) is to make money for its ownership. It's a business. That's it. Its purpose is to sell shit to people who will buy it. Winning football games is generally helpful to meeting that purpose. But as Jerry Jones has demonstrated, it's not at all necessary. @Iceman is entirely right in his assessment. Jerry Jones is the most successful owner in the NFL. He alone was responsible for driving the NFL's revenue stream over the past 35 years. The team is now probably worth more than 100x what he paid for it. That's not really due to any other ownership group; it's not really due to Roger Goddell's leadership. It's largely due to the changes Jerry Jones pioneered, advocated, and implemented. The Chiefs have more recent success than the Cowboys. But the Hunt family owes Jerry Jones a huge debt of gratitude for making that franchise what it's worth today. And do you honestly think that Clark Hunt wouldn't trade Jerry franchises tomorrow straight up? Has Jerry damaged the on-the-field product? I mean, yeah--maybe. But when viewed through the perspective of the Cowboys as a money-making venture, maybe not. Because what we want more than wins is drama. And Jerry has delivered drama. It's the best show in the NFL. Hell--it's the best show in professional sports. Again--I'm not a Cowboys fan. But damned if I don't listen to Cowboys talk on the Ticket because it's entertaining AF. Jerry has entertained the Metroplex (and really, all of America) for 35 years. You want wins? Go cheer for the fucking Eagles. But if you want to be entertained, there's nothing better than this fucking circus.
  10. Knowles system is very specific. I think it is unlikely that Patricia will run the same system.
  11. As for last year, Notre Dame lost the following week at home to Northern Illinois University. Remember how they discredited our win at Alabama a few years ago? That wasn't the same Alabama team as later in the season! Also, Olin dared not utter the name of near-nemesis, The Bowling Green Seniors.
  12. I bet he’s a full kit wanker.
  13. Is Livingstone a KA or SAE? Owens will do great at Sam Houston next year.
  14. The stagnant economy in Japan can be traced to the combination of xenophobic immigration and declining birthrate. The "Republicans are better with the economy" geniuses seem to have missed that.
  15. Hey, now. We were the smarties of the last mouth breather conference, as well.
  16. Holy shit. He got charged with asspelting?
  17. Good stuff. We sat by his whole family at the BC game last year. It was highly entertaining.
  18. Really? Did you miss 20 years of stories about how awful our fans were treated last time? Also, Columbus isn’t Ann Arbor.
  19. Agreed - despite the high rankings this one feels a lot less monumental than the games 20(!) years ago did. Certainly it's the playoff structure that takes out some of the pizzazz. OTOH I admit there's something nice about having a game like this that's "big but not TOO big" where the loser will have plenty to play for, including a possible CFP rematch later on. I miss the insanity of the old pre-BCS system, though.
  20. Well, @RomaVicta, it looks like the Aggies once again won the offseason!
  21. To make it fit that particular helmet it would have to be tiny. And when you make it tiny it doesn’t work on other helmet styles. They’re not going to use 3-4 different size logos on the helmets.
