Some of you may remember my dog Roosevelt from the other board. He was named after Roosevelt Leaks and survived the house fire with me in 2015. Thank you so much to those of you that donated and helped us out. I don't know what I would have done without the support I received from y'all. Ro was just shy of 15 1/2 years. He'd been battling a pancreatic tumor that stole all his blood sugar as soon as he ate causing him to go into shock and start seizing up. The vet said you usually get 6 months after diagnosis, but he fought through it for another year and a half. We thought we were going to lose him in November, but as a last ditch try, started giving him CBD and it stopped the seizures in a few days. He hadn't had one since. PM me if you want more info on the CBD, it was literally a life saver and gave him a massive increase in quality of life. He'd torn both knees and had them replaced via TPLO in 2015 and 2016. He was in a lot of pain from arthritis, so we had the vet come to the house and put him to sleep yesterday. It's one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make, but there really wasn't much choice. The pain meds weren't working well enough anymore. He couldn't support his own body weight to poop and was so smart, he felt ashamed when he pooped in the house the last week or so. No amount of reassurance from us could make it better. We had him cremated via aquamation, rather than fire. He survived one fire and I wasn't going to put him back into one at the end. He was the most amazing dog I've ever known, my best friend and faithful companion for 15 1/2 years. I feel so empty without him. One of his favorite things was riding in the car when we drove through West Texas. He loved the smell of cow shit and every time we passed a feedlot, he'd go nuts smelling the air. We're going to take another drive soon and scatter some of his ashes there. Here's him on our last road trip in January. We knew it was probably his last trip, so we left outside air on for him for the entire drive. Here he is leaning down to smell the poop smell coming in the air vent and then looking over his left shoulder as the smell wafted past.15 points

Yet another aggy in the wild embarrassing themselves story: My company had the honor today of hosting a team from NASA and the ISS for a presentation on collaborative opportunities in space. The keynote presenter was a NASA astronaut who flew on 3 shuttle missions including 2 deployments to the ISS. She logged over 42 days in space. She's a certified bad-ass by any unit of measurement, and a Texas Ex to boot. During the Q&A one of the questions from the audience was to ask her to describe her most thrilling moment as an astronaut. Now, ramjet can attest to this better than most, but being an astronaut doesn't equate to being a great or inspiring public speaker. Her engineering principles were on full display. She was calculated, precise...anything but boastful (almost to her detriment; the audience wants to be wowed by tales of what they'll never experience). But she did her best to describe the immense power of the 8 1/2 minute launch, the beauty of seeing the aurora borealis plus massive weather patterns on earth from space,, etc. She also talked about how one of the most memorable and cool things she saw was the view from the shuttle each time (she was on the Discovery all 3 missions) upon re-entry when (I'm gonna fuck up the particulars) the plasma super heated and a brilliant--in her words--"burnt orange glow encased the vehicle. As a Longhorn I thought that was really cool." The audience here in Austin politely chuckled/applauded as you'd expect. Except for the dumb fuck, twenty something aggy who waited until the crowd noise subsided to let out a 5 second long "hisssssssssss." Heads snapped around to find this douche who, when he realized he was being stared down, lifted his right hand with a feeble gig em sign. This dipshit is two years or less into his career & he thinks the appropriate thing to do in a public event (we were also streaming it globally) is to hiss at an astronaut and PhD in engineering? What the fuck is wrong with these idiots?14 points

After all this time, two things are abundantly clear: 1. Trump is a pos scumball; 2. Those who support him are pieces of shit scumballs. That is all we need to know. So, get out and vote come next election time.9 points

this is going to be a fun next few weeks of reminiscing one year ago today, I started my last "no, I got this" attempt at sobering up-- I'll go to your meetings, I'll talk about the steps with my sponsor, but I'm going to do it while remaining a resentful fearful basket case. My periods of sobriety were getting shorter and shorter, the relapses becoming more frequent, and they epitomized the "bellyful of whiskey and headful of AA" misery because there wasn't a single second of fun left in the drinking. And even worse, there was progressively less escape in it. I couldn't get drunk enough to not be aware of how bad off I was, how I was edging closer and closer to losing everything, how much pain I was causing. It wasn't for lack of trying though. So a year ago today, I popped a couple of benzos and white-knuckled my way through my first day back from a 24x7, ten-day bender. I was sure I'd stay sober, this time. I was always sure "this time".7 points

Let me summarize Bobby... Bobby's told Texas is looking to bolster it's roster. Except Texas isn't actually pursuing anyone that he knows of. But they found two players last spring, so they may look again. But he's not sure what position, whether it's LB or TE, until they actually start looking for grad transfers. So we'll know if Texas is looking to bolster it's roster when they actually start pursuing players which they currently are not. Texas hasn't recruited east Texas except they did with Overshown, Ingram, Sweat. Other programs also haven't recruited east Texas. Big cities produce a bigger pool of talented players where Texas has had success. Texas will recruit talented east Texas prospects like Kitan Crawford. So basically Texas doesn't recruit east Texas except when they do. .... great fucking insight there. Someone put him in a nursing home please. 24/7 has gone to pure shit.6 points

So the Russians interfered with the 2016 election, and the president obstructed justice to cover it up? And the answer is not to impeach because impeachment would politically help the president? Meanwhile, Russia, whose interference is documented in an over 400 page report and a bunch of rage tweeting on witch hunt/hoax gets to interfere again in 2020. Seems like a winning strategy on the dems' part to hope this all magically gets solved at the polls.6 points

It just comes down to competing narratives. I think "the partisan hacks in the Senate protected a corrupt president on party lines" is a much, much easier sell to the people you are talking about (and everyone, really) than "I trust the honor of Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP over all of the testimony and evidence that came out during impeachment." IMO, too many people are approaching this as if there is an inevitable outcome that we should figure out in advance and go with — the public will think this or that. Trump has proven that there is no such inevitability: he made Hillary's emails the main issue in 2016, even beyond his supporters, and he didn't do it by subtlety or reasonable nuance. He did it by calling her a criminal who needed to be locked up in prison. Over and over again. It's up to the Dems to set the narrative now, sell it, and move the public/polls in the direction we want them to go. IMO the way to do that is to go hard and Trump's corruption, hand in hand with anti-corruption policies. Exactly what Elizabeth Warren is doing, BTW.6 points

Seems that the bulk of folks -- from a somewhat broad swath of the spectrum -- think that: 1 - no, you don't get to vote while incarcerated for a felony. You lose the most essential freedom -- your actual liberty -- as part of your sentence. It seems fair that you lose this additional freedom/right while you are incarcerated. 2 - yes, you should be able to vote after you have served your time. You get your liberty back, you should get your right to vote back. Our goal should be full re-integration into society. 3 - and we can help reduce the problem altogether by real criminal justice reform so that the system doesn't churn out a huge class of "felons" for bullshit drug offenses and the like. Fewer felons means this issue is much less significant (and of course, brings a whole host of additional benefits). The extreme right (see chicken sammich) says "no vote, no way, never." The hard left (see bt) says "all voting, all the time." The 60-70% (my guess) in the middle has this one right. It would be a big change, but motivated by a broad social change in opinion. That's the main kind of legal change that ultimately ends up being successful.5 points

Impeachment is a political process and that’s unfortunate because it is the only way a president can be held accountable for high crimes while in office. Trump is above the law while in power until Congress holds him accountable. It’s really that simple. The American people didn’t choose Trump to be president, the electoral college did. The people chose another candidate and when the American people were given an opportunity to check his presidency they overwhelmingly voted to do just that. Unfortunately the American people weren’t given the opportunity to alter the Senate enough beyond partisan lines to outright remove Trump if evidence of his crimes became public. However, that doesn’t mean the House should abdicated their responsibilities because the Senate has too many cult members. The world is watching. History is watching. Now is the time for Article 1 to take a stand against Article 2. The American people have elected them to do it if necessary. It is necessary.5 points

She remains my candidate and will likely remain so until she drops out. We live in a country where too many will not listen to her because they're a little annoyed by the pitch of her voice or that the physical package is slight. She's brilliant and bold. She's so clean that the hate engine can only generate Pocahontas to ridicule her. A debate between Warren and Trump would be a delight. She'd likely crush any other GOP candidate on the stage. Go, Elizabeth!5 points

Apparently she died of cancer in Guatemala. For those who don't know, she was in a horrific car accident in Austin in 1999, caused by a drunk driver, which resulted in permanent disabilities and disfigurement. The car caught fire before they could get her out. She was my age and her accident happened my first semester at UT. I've seen her post-accident face countless times and it still jars me. In the 20 years since the accident, she did a hell of a job raising awareness of the consequences of drunk driving. RIP.4 points

Anyone with a half a brain, which we can’t assume for David Dennison, knows that death toll by Islamic terrorists dwarfs those deaths by neo-Nazis, caused in Pittsburgh or NZ by lone wolves. I also get pissed at “both sides” progressives who like to pin NZ and Pittsburgh and act as if they were perpetrated by right wing Christians . If any of those fucking morons cracked open a book and learned the tenets of national socialism like I have, they’d realize how much contempt Nazis have for Christianity. How many murderous terrorist groups around the world exist that are driven by Islam. Compare that to similar terrorist groups inspired by Christianity to kill. It’s laughable to even have to make this point. Also, love the douchebags hating on EMAW for citing the source. That’s the Cunt Rules way. Lib asks for a source and then when provided the messenger is tagged for being stupid, a liar, etc4 points

Sigh. Because of course, we all have GLORIOUSLY efficient experiences with our cell phone carrier, the cable company, our credit card bank, etc. etc. ad infinitum. If you are dealing with anything outside of a mom and pop business where you are known, odds are that you are getting crappy customer service. But there are exceptions, and I'll hazard a guess that the percentage of those is similar in both the private and public sector. I get great customer service from Southwest Airlines. I also get great customer service from a number of state and city offices around Texas. Friendly people, willing to put in a little work to make sure my question gets answered, etc. Wanna know what the common thread is for shitty customer service? Not spending money on customer service. If you are a private enterprise that saves money by making me go through a 10 minute long phone tree before I get a real person, and then it's someone in a call center in Timbuktu, OR you are a government agency whose budget allows you to pay $29k a year for your front office folks, the consumer who interacts with those systems is probably going to have a sub-par experience. We do love our myths, though.4 points
