I'd just like to point out that neither myself nor any of my fellow nurses, fellow advanced nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers ever swore an oath that we would lay down our lives for strangers. We just ask that we be properly protected in order to care for our patients. We have always shown up, and our "higher ups" or "administration" or whatever you want to call them consistently fail to fulfill the duties and responsibilities they have towards us. This is just their most public failing, and hopefully something positive comes from it. But I have my doubts.58 points

I think my cat may have fucked us. I requested one fucking thing: don't roam the neighborhood and don't play chase-tail with your neighbor cat friends. That's it. Let me go outside. Let me take the risk because I can ramp up and be super OCD about this. Well she disobeyed, got out of the house and went to see two tabbies in their yards over the last 2 weeks and went to the duplex dumpster enclosure twice. Now she's had two days of poor appetite, snooty nose, and overall disheveled coat and diarrhea. I'm scared shitless. I'm seriously considering going today to buy a pistol and ammo so if this thing gets really bad for me I can kill myself before the worst symptoms of the pneumonia distress start. If I'm fortunate and don't get sick very badly I'm dropping her off at the pound. She showed she can't even put my or her own feline health ahead of her selfish cat desires to stealthily pursue small reptiles and birds. That's unforgivable.13 points

How about the takeaway is "instead of shitting all over our institutions, creating a death spiral of incompetence and failure, we actually maintain real oversight, expectations, and competence?" The last 30 years of federal governance in particular have acted with PURPOSE to turn our institutions into a shitshow. How about -- I dunno -- we stop doing that? I don't want to put all of my faith in a CDC that is the end-product of 30+ years of disdain, neglect, and hostility - instead, I want to put my faith in a CDC that is reasonably well-run, has a well-defined mission, and genuine oversight not just as to their budget, but as to their mission performance? Fuck your false choices. My life shouldn't hinge on a choice between federal agencies that the GOP has purposefully undermined and bassackwards states where the GOP has enshrined faith healing above medical science. My choice is "stop the fuckery."12 points

And it would look a LOT different if they had to depend on the governor of Bavaria saying "nein, we don't need tests, God will protect us." You love to point to the failures in the performance of the Federal government -- and I remind you, this admin has PURPOSEFULLY set up an entire executive branch apparatus that is DESIGNED to fail -- to support the idea that "we need to empower the states." You fail to note that among those states are Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Kansas, etc. If our health and survival depends on the leadership decisions of those states....fuck it, we're as good as dead. We didn't rely on Alabama and Mississippi to drive our response to the Axis in WWII. We did so on a national level, because it was a national problem. Can and should there be delegation to the local level? Of course. But it shouldn't be a "do what you want" delegation. It should be a delegation with clear instruction and requirements. If we set up a national testing plan, we can't delegate that to Mississippi so their governor can just say "in Mississippi, OUR tests will be asking people if they have faith in white blue-eyed Jesus, our lord and savior -- if they say yes, they are immune!"9 points
-
Where the hell are small rural communities and even larger cities in poor states going to get the funds to pay for local testing? Call it defunding, call it cut off, call it whatever you want, but if the US govt is dumping money all over the place, then cutting funds for testing seems insane. That's going to be a cornerstone of any plan to dig our way out of this - failure to continue funding tests is going to end up costing us a hell of a lot more on the other end.9 points

apologies for dragging you into CR, but I didn't want to upset anyone's sensibilities in the DT thread. There's a genuine issue that even if the local governments had their act together to get test collection and administration going - THERES STILL NOT ENOUGH FUCKING TESTS IN THE UNITED STATES! That's not something that local governments can fix, and frankly is exactly what the federal government should be responsible for. It's an issue that spans state borders and affects interstate commerce. Federal government is written all over it. It's a fucking failure that they have not built the testing capacity, or bought/licensed it from another country, like South Korea or Germany that has its shit together. The lack of testing capacity is the biggest bottleneck, and that's something that really only the feds are equipped to solve on a national level.8 points

Dude, shut the fuck up you clown. No one here cares. It’s the covid information thread. We’ve established it wasn’t an inane question. And we’ve established I never asked a question in the first place. I just pointed out that you are a stupid tool. No one jumped down a doctor’s throat. 2 people simply said “yeah, we’re not offering medical treatment without a doctor, and by the way we aren’t selling this for profit.” No one said shit about powerful lawyers or medical advisors. I’m sorry your reading comprehension sucks and your fantastical projections of who either of us might be reeks of the delusions of a bitter, jealous little bitch. Fuck off. for the record I live in a 2k square foot home and drive a used car. But im thrilled that the real estate I occupy in your sad little brain thinks I’m a modern day Carnegie.7 points

One will be a lot more hostile towards a progressive agenda. One has already installed Supreme Court justices who are openly hostile towards a progressive agenda. One has already installed Federal and Appeals Court judges who are openly hostile towards a progressive agenda. One is openly hostile to any idea of tackling climate change. Gotta the new model to the point where the baseline is complete. Issues with modelling the deaths seems to be gone or at least much improved. I'll know if it gets the reduction portion correct when I get a tracking version and the Goal Scenario completed. That's where the rubber will meet the pavement - it might need a little more tuning, but I'm optimistic. It's useless for predicting right now because we are on a different trajectory but wanted to share and update thus far. Large graph: We are still beating my (old) Goal Scenario, and close to flat-lining, which I didn't think was possible. Deaths are following close to how they should be - at least to the naked eye and an old model. Lower-left: The way I'm doing transmission and infection is now completely different, but I'm going to keep showing the disease growth an a similar way - this way is being calculated only slightly different than before (blue lines). The goal is 0.10 and the 10-day trend is currently 0.12. All trends are stating to scrunch up and it looks like we will land right in that area around the weekend. IFR (red) is shown for the portion that the baseline should be fairly accurate, but a lot of assumptions go into this value (1.18%), so it's very much an educated guess at this point. The likely range is 0.5% ~ 2.5%. But don't even quote that because like I said, this might need to be re-tuned.7 points

This is as of a few hours ago. Most agree there will be states that flare later but overall as of now, this seems like a fair assessment of where most states are at. As the users on this thread know, modeling can change rather quickly. https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/patient-flow/updated-covid-19-projections-are-out-the-new-peak-dates-in-each-state.html?origin=BHRE&utm_source=BHRE&utm_medium=email&oly_enc_id=7221B9683990F9B Peak demand for hospital resources due to COVID-19 is expected this week in the U.S., according to updated projections from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle. The model, first released in late March, presents estimates of predicted health service utilization and deaths due to COVID-19 for each state in the U.S. if social distancing measures are maintained through May. Researchers used state-level hospital capacity data, data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths from the World Health Organization, and observed COVID-19 utilization from select locations. When IHME first released its model, the only place where the number of daily deaths had already peaked was Wuhan, China. The data from Wuhan formed the basis for IHME's estimation of the time from implementation of social distancing policies to the peak day of deaths. That estimation is now based on data from Wuhan and seven locations in Spain and Italy where the number of daily deaths appears to be peaking or to have peaked. The model has also been updated to use three different weighting schemes to better approximate the variation in potential policy impact across social distancing mandates. Projections for peak demand for resources, namely hospital beds and ventilators, also changed after IHME incorporated new data sources into its model and made changes to its analytical framework. Access more information about the changes here. According to the most recent projections, which use data updated April 8, peak demand for hospital resources will occur at the national level on April 11. However, this varies by state. Below is the projected date of peak demand for hospital beds, ICU beds and ventilators in each state according to the IHME model. April 1 Vermont April 2 Washington April 4 Louisiana April 7 Michigan April 8 Colorado New York Ohio April 9 Delaware District of Columbia April 11 Illinois New Jersey April 12 Hawaii April 13 California Pennsylvania Wisconsin April 14 Idaho Indiana April 15 North Carolina West Virginia April 16 Mississippi New Hampshire April 17 Alaska Maine Maryland Nevada Tennessee April 20 Alabama Georgia Kansas Massachusetts Montana Virginia April 21 Connecticut Florida Kentucky Missouri New Mexico North Dakota April 22 Arizona Oregon Texas April 23 Minnesota Oklahoma April 24 South Carolina April 25 Arkansas Rhode Island Utah April 26 Nebraska April 27 Iowa South Dakota April 29 Wyoming7 points

Keep one thing in mind, the loudest voice is not necessarily the most accurate voice. Social media/News media are always going to pick the worst areas with the worst problems to highlight. I'm not saying it's fake, but it's not indicative of what is going on everywhere.7 points

Of course, EMAW- the guy who posted a photo-shopped headline 24 hours ago and refuses to acknowledge it- also refuses to acknowledge that the Mueller Investigation, appointed by Trump's DOJ, corroborated the intelligence community's consensus that a foreign autocratic government- Russia- interfered in the 2016 election, continues to interfere in American elections, and that the president failed a take-home, open book test with the help of his lawyers. EMAW and the GOP have set the bar so low that an investigation that spews out over 40 indictments, guilty pleas, convictions, sends over half a dozen Trump associates to prison, and spawns another dozen federal cases is, in their deranged heads, more than just sweet vindication, but bizarrely, evidence of a hoax.7 points

Hello there. So here's the deal: although I'll be posting much less frequently than before, I want to stop in here to say that I'll try to continue (er, pick back up) posting in here or a few weather threads. Why? Because this is the cold and flu (har dee har) season, and because it's the height of severe weather season in Texas. However, as this spring has been exceptionally great (as in no severe weather and a very mild, more wet than dry pattern), there's been little need. And, this has been a terrific winter-to-spring IMHO.. warm, rather wet, and mild - that is very few days way down below normal or way up above it (today's getting close). Hell, we had an overnight Austin freeze in December, then didn't see one again until late February - and only one more. I'll take that every time. Add to that I think at times I help people with this, and if I don't I allow them to laugh or give them a target of hate rather than their wife or pet Chihuahua. Anyway, like everyone, I make mistakes at times, in this case in weather crapshooting, but if I can help one person avoid a hardship through this I'm happy. Yeah that last sentence was barfingly clicheish but true. The rest of "the stuff" involving myself I'm just gonna leave be, perhaps another time, maybe at some point I'll offer a PM of the past half year. But not now. Moving on... Since it's been so mild the past few months, does that mean a blistering summer? I'll work on that in the other thread. But the answer is no. At least one doesn't happen because of the other, although of course it might happen. Spring trends DO NOT portend similar summers, period. So when it gets to be 100 again every day for 5 months, you can look back on this and laugh. Anyhoo - I will mostly chime in with "significant" weather happenings. A chance of a nice shower or two isn't "significant". Nor is a spot of rain after a hot spell. I'm talking stuff that's worth noting because it's really a big deal or dangerous. As for today, this is a "life shits on me more than anyone else" day. That's because what's forecast to be severe today is unlikely but minimally possible. But if it hits, in a very narrow pocket, it could be really shitty, as in huge hail (tennis balls). Now big hail like that rarely lasts long and is very pinpoint, but still... if it falls on you, your life will absolutely suck (glad I readjusted my homeowner's to the minimal coverage to get much more hail reimbursement for the roof the other day!). My guess is almost no one here will see that hail. But a tiny pocket might. The rest of us might see a nasty brief little storm. Better chances the more southeast of ATX you are. But even since yesterday some of the models have said the moisture conditions aloft have sorta swung to less severe chances. Still, if it happens, it'll start firing up about now W or SW of us, then move over us. Somewhat unusually, this severe possibility area is small - and Austin city is directly in the center of it. Still, not worrying. There's a warm cap above us and the crap has to break through that to get nasty, and it's a tough job. So the deal today is I wouldn't worry much but keep your good car in the garage unless you want to paint it later with TItleist or Top-Flite advertising. Tomorrow looks even less of a chance again unless you're E or S of the ATX area. Then it gets pretty chilly for most of a week again. LOVE this weather right now! More if/when severe is an issue this week, but I doubt it. Love, Frankie the Yanker.7 points

I guess my wires are a little crossed here, I had the understanding that FDA and CDC dragged their feet on doing anything, and put roadblocks in place because that was the directive from the chief executive. It sounds like you're arguing that those agencies (and by extension, the chief exec that orders them around) weren't trying to downplay the pandemic and that the delays were only because of administrative bloat? Not trying to twist your words, I just don't get what you're saying. The bureaucracic centralization is what enabled the fucked federal response, but I don't think that they would have botched the response as badly as in literally any other administration (on both sides). And I (probably naively) hope we'll never see our public institutions assaulted and undermined to the extent that they have been since 2017, so I don't understand why the CDC and FDA are the boogeymen here. Seem more like scapegoats to me6 points

Yes, that's exactly what Texas did. Governor Abbott -- illegally, mind you -- "suspended" the statute by which cities and counties impose SIP restrictions, "to the extent that those restrictions are MORE restrictive" than the governor's. He flat-out does not have the authority to do that (I mean, the legal argument isn't even nuanced -- it's clear)....but he's not being challenged on it because he's a mob boss, and if any local government stands up to him, he will punish them relentlessly next legislative session. Yeah, THOSE are the folks we need to trust our lives to -- shitheel despots beholden to anti-science fuckholes who govern with a cruel iron fist. Sounds like a PERFECT plan.6 points

Yeah, a zone read/RPO with Ehlinger and RoJo against Dime would be catastrophic. Imagine Ehlinger only having to worry about reading a single linebacker or RoJo only having to make one guy miss to bust a big run. Really glad Herman is smart enough to avoid such a terrible scenario so we can run into a Nickel package that doesn’t have to respect one of the slot receivers, so they can essentially add numbers against the run all so we can have more run plays available to us that we ignore so we can call inside zone for the 30th time that game.6 points

It's anger from the market not reflecting the reality of the situation due to people giving too much weight to the stimulus. It will amplify future losses when the other shoe drops and the market realizes how bad the economy is in late May. Basically, instead of finding bottom naturally, the bottom has been delayed and will now possibly be even deeper. But yes, some short sellers are mad because their puts didn't pay off. But others are mad for macroeconomic reasons.6 points

Some of them were. Some of them weren't. The really amazing thing is that hippies or buzzcuts, and all points in between, the common thread of the generation is selfishness. They are the "ME" generation, with remarkable consistency across the board. They rode a wave of the greatest era of economic prosperity in perhaps all of human history -- most of which was an accident of history and circumstance (the USA's unique post-war position, which had us sailing for 30+ years), and they view that as 1) their birthright, which cannot and should not be shared with anyone else, and 2) as the way things still ARE, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary ("I paid my way through college ]$800 a semester tuition] delivering pizzas 10 hours a week, why can't you? Lazy slackers!") Fuck em.6 points
