I’m in Seaside on the beach. Had to head in to the house early to deal with some work-related stuff. About an hour later, my wife comes in with the four kids. She decided that it would be funny to buy the 7 and 9 year old lunatics a kazoo each. They’ve been driving me insane for an hour. So, I think to myself, “I’ll take a break for a minute. Go out on the porch, get the fresh air, maybe check out the recruiting board on Surly. “ You God damned motherfuckers. This Texas Tech 2022 game rehashing in the most pedantic ways possible makes me want to vomit. I’d rather listen to a couple of wild ass idiot kids making as much irritating noise as possible than read that shit.24 points

So, the new reality for Russia, China, and the world: NATO will be a 32 member bloc with 1 billion people. Those 32 members compose by far the biggest chunk of high income/development/innovation societies in the world. Militarily, the leading member of the bloc is the most powerful single nation and several more hover in the top ten. Combined, easily the most powerful, best equipped, best trained, most capable military force in human history. Strategically, Russia (140 million people, lucky to be a G20 nation, medium income, low innovation, miserable demographics) has seen its declared for become immensely stronger. Its Western sea outlets to the world are completely contained by its adversary. China is looking at the top Pacific power across the pond and growing assertiveness from the very same “marginal top ten” militaries. Politically, each of the “other 31” have been driven into the arms of China and Russia’s declared top adversary and are even more open to any US administration smart enough to play nice (fingers crossed). And if you must be an asshole and talk REALPOLITIK (ugh) this move and recent history means more leverage and levers to prod these rich friends to do stuff that’s NOT strictly NATO cause you don’t really have an option. So, keep this in mind as you read knuckleheads whinge about the BRICS and their rise. Understand that no one WANTS to have to rely on cobbling together a jalopy where Brazil, South Africa, India, and Russia (LOL) are wheels. They’re doing it cause they don’t have a fucking choice, they’d prefer all of Europe to not be our inalienable friends. A transatlantic bloc (basically Oceana plus parts of Eurasia for you Orwell readers) is not a burden, it’s the best source of strength we have. You done goofed, Vlad. And for that matter, you too Xi.22 points

We’ve got Tex Pete going full Football Board giving room temperature IQ takes on a game he didn’t even watch, he listened to it on the motherfucking radio! And we’ve got fully unleashed Satya off his Prozac with no word limit?! Oh hell yeah. Surly is in midseason form, baby! I really hope we don’t get a commitment any time soon to mess this up.19 points

It’s been a real luxury— and I mean that in the best sense— that Americans and even Western Europeans— have for decades been able to mostly not pay much attention to how NATO works and what it really means. In great times, it should work that way, as something you know about but don’t need to get into the details. This war has (IMO) had a “benefit” also of really shaking our most well-meaning and generally educated citizens to life and hopefully will influence the choices we make with the understanding that foreign affairs and security really matter and that making good choices in that sphere ALLOWS us the room to have the conversations about what domestic decisions are best. And (no CR) I usually believe that an educated citizen with a sense of right and wrong can usually get to the right place on this stuff faster than the DC foreign policy blob or God forbid our populist agitators. So I’m glad when we have our smart people at home asking questions about NATO and how it works and why it’s important.16 points

(Edit: Transcript of an IT video. Did it so my head wouldn't explode because of all the crap on the last few pages.) The Recruiting Breakdown July 11, 2023 GERRY Hills: Feels good about RPM; thinks LSU wants him, even if they say the don't; checks all the boxes; Texas big time favorite Jayden Jackson: NIL big factor; OSU, Ok, Texas; Texas and OSU favorites; tougher than Hills recruitment; element of surprise (not told any school as of last night). OSU 191 miles away, so distance-wise, OSU makes sense. Family in Houston. NIL key factor. Miami making a run at Jackson and Lindsey. Wingo: More like and AD Mitchell / Neyor outside receiver; Wingo is like Cook, inside/outside, versatile. D'Antre Robinson: Thinks Texas over Florida, feels pretty good about Texas; don't see how he doesn't end up a 4 star prospect. Not been in much contact with Fla. TJ Lindsey: Texas or Aub. Miami/A&M also trying. If Lindsey decides before July 20th, positive for Texas. Else, Texas/Aub visits end of July, becomes a coin flip. Dominick McKinley: Wants to announce at UA. As of now, doesn't think LSU. Or OSU. Will LSU/Ala get Official Visits? Mom likes acads (she commented grad rates among DLs has gone up, since Sark - not an easy to find data point.) Hills: July 12th Jackson: July 13th Robinson: July 21st Corian Gibson: July 22nd Lindsey: Late July McKinley: UA game Simmons hanging out with JJR and others somewhere. Not much info on Zino; thought it would be done by now, but slowed down. Texas confident. Simmons - nothing changed, very street smart, media savvy. Believes Texas in the lead, depends on where he shows up end of July. Visited Miami, Oregon, SMU - not going there. Thinks Texas, LSU, Aggie. Last weekend of July important next step, if still uncommitted. Danny Okoye: Into fall. Will Mom show up at OU BBQ? Jordan Ross: Not expected to go to FLA. Visited Texas, liked the visit. Mom into Texas/academics. Tennessee big player. Wardell Mack: Texas team to beat, decision maybe late July or Aug. If he goes to Fla late July, could change thinking. When does he commit? Does he then visit LSU? Numbers buster for LSU, that talented. Kobe Black: May go into fall Selman Bridges: Ark. Myles Davis: Aggie lean. Corian Gibson: Would be an upset if not Texas :-)). Not told Clemson he's not coming. Thinks Texas/Clem, OSU not a player. Thinks he entered June knowing where he was going. Brandon Baker: Thinks decision late July or Aug. Oregon slipped. Now, Texas, Ohio State, Oregon. Sark/Flood zoom call tonight. Plays right tackle. Jones leaving, playing time positive. When moved up timeline, called Texas for OV - thinks positive data point. Blake Ivy: Aggie favorite over Texas, LSU right there. Sark/Flood zoom call with him too. Wanted tackle, realizing guard is where he may be long term, Texas was honest. Acad/business, Texas/Ag avantage there. Eugene Brooks: Not recruiting any longer. DeAndre Carter: Visiting for Kansas game. Aub, Texas, Mich State, USC/UCLA - recruitment going into fall. Good communication. Q - will he leave the West Coast? (Baker will - will Carter?) Tackle - Ory Williams, Westin Davis, Poton(sp?) still on the board. Still think 16/17 by end of July … JUSTIN Wells going to meet Wingo; Texas has really pushed; Sark has relationship; different predictions, no one knows for sure; IT thinks Texas (Gerry - he had said ESD, but may not stick)13 points

Is there anything that sums up aTm more than a guy giving his recollection that no one else “ever gets quite right” as a real accounting, when the rest of the world relies on the literal video evidence of the incident we’ve all seen a million times? They’ve all got QAnon brain. “I was 15 at the time, and let me tell you that there are some aspects of the Zapruder Film that just didn’t properly capture the moment Kennedy got shot in the head.”12 points

Democrats need to acknowledge what the GOP has become and that their sole duty is not just playing defense. They need to play offense. To offend fascists. Not tyrannically- the opposite of. Righteously, because more Americans are good than evil. Because more Americans believe we are all created equal than fuckstick Americans who think we aren't.12 points

I mean, why are you inviting more posts from FartingMonk and GREHorn? This is stupid. You think the Russians need movitvation to fight? They're all brainwashed dipshits who think Ukraine is fulll of Nazis and are harvesting children. It's better off to continue to kill leadership in any way possible and continue to ratchet up the fear and pressure for the entire regime and even the populace. You think Russians didn't give a fuck before but now that a sub commander got shit, fuck, they're all in this war? Come on man. The motivations of the people don't matter one fucking bit.11 points

NATO allies have agreed to simplify the process of Ukraine's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said . "We reiterated that Ukraine will become a member of NATO and agreed to cancel the requirements for an action plan for membership in the alliance. This will change the path for Ukraine to join NATO, instead of a two-stage process, it will be a one-stage process," Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Vilnius. According to Stoltenberg, the NATO summit also agreed on the establishment of a Ukraine-NATO council, as well as a multi-year support program aimed at bringing the Ukrainian Armed Forces up to NATO standards.10 points

This is rage inducing for me... This poor idiot has no idea where he is, who he is fighting, what the goal is or even a basic grasp of simply military concepts or terms.. The Ukrainian interviewing him is just absolutely at end because of how do you reason with that? How do you show them the folly of their ways? He is interviewing a guy that from day one was determined as cannon fodder and the poor guy has no clue that in the eyes of Russia he is completely expendable. The lack of basic knowledge, even simple ideas about the world is disturbing. How can he make it to the front and not at least know the basic military objective of the operation is taking Kyiv? So he did 9 years of remedial school, gets ordered to go to the front, has no idea where he is, what the objectives are, any basic concepts of strategy and then put on the front.. I guess the grand Russian strategic view is that he either he gets killed or he gets captured and is a drain on the Ukrainian system, but until then they can use the overall numbers as a way to slow down the Ukrainian advance... When you have one side flooding the battlefield the dregs of their society what recourse do you have but the wholesale slaughter of fools?10 points
