  1. Here’s a summer 2025 story y’all might enjoy from deep in the heart of SEC Tennessee country. So a longtime friend (with benefits, no pics, UT alum) asked if I would ride with her from DC to Tucson, where she was spending a few weeks taking care of aging mom. So one night we crashed in Knoxville. Next morning, we were on the road pretty early and we stopped in a Starbucks in the bumfuck outskirts of Knoxville. We decided to order inside and use the rest rooms. The only customers in the place were two old pot-bellied codgers (probably in their 70s), both decked in Volunteer tee shirts and caps. I am just wearing jeans and cotton shirt, nothing to connect me with any school. I could not resist, so I said: “Y’all gonna let them Longhorns take over the SEC” Tennessee Codger 1: Takes off his Vol cap, rubs his balding crown, and merely takes a breath shakes his head. Tennessee Codger 2: “Yeah, it was a big mistake to let them in the SEC” … said with scowl on face. Me: “Yep, they’re gonna kick butt this year. They ain't like the Aggies” Codger 2: "No shit they ain't the Aggies!" I amble over and grab the two coffees and banana bread. About this time, my friend emerges from bathroom and as we walk out the door, she flashes the HOOK'EM sign and laughs. (Looking rather smoke in her tight jeans and boots) Codger 1: “What the hell?” Codger 2: “Them God Damn Longhorns!”

  7. Quit CrossFit with the birth of my son, gained 30, lost 20. Now just treading water. I don’t hate Quinn. I hate Mack. One things for sure, I appreciate the fact that I can use your football takes as a guide stone for feeling good about feeling the opposite. Just bad take after bad take. The Venn diagram for people who still defend Mack brown are Old, Dumb, and it’s got like a 90% overlap. The guy tried to sink the program on his way out the door. After not doing his job for the previous 5 years. Fuck him. also, what a loser mentality. “Well, all his players love him.” The motherfucker wasn’t paid millions of dollars to graduate players who loved him. He was paid to win games. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone bitch about how Nick Saban’s players didn’t all love him. Man, I wonder how their fan base deals with that disappointment. Guess by wrapping themselves in all those national titles. I’m not sure how old you are man, but at some point box jumps become risky regarding injury and the returns versus step up’s just aren’t with it, imo. I hope you’re at least stepping down.

  9. Burton: We had some major questions going into the scrimmage yesterday. Some of them were answered: Back-up QB The role feels more and more like transfer Matthew Caldwell’s to lose. We’re told Caldwell looked more than serviceable again yesterday and even started with the second unit. Granted, Steve Sarkisian singled out KJ Lacey, too. The freshman engineered a two-minute drive for a score while working with the 1s. But the plan has always been to redshirt Lacey while letting Caldwell and Trey Owens fight over the back-up role. Tight end rotation Texas worked a lot in 12 personnel yesterday and the first two in the rotation were Jack Endries and Spencer Shannon. Jordan Washington has had a good training camp but Shannon has held Washington off to this point because of his skill and precision as an inline blocker. Secondary Texas seems pleased with the decision to try Michael Taaffe at nickel. That means Taaffe is likely the day-one nickel vs Ohio State, before a heavy situational rotation begins within the game. Likewise, the corner spot opposite Manny Muhammad seems headed to a stand-off of sorts. Both Jaylan Guilbeau and Kobe Black are likely to see starter reps. ** Other positional notes: Interior D-line rotation With Maraad Watson sidelined, the Texas DL rotation was reshaped some yesterday. Alex January played alongside Travis Shaw while Hero Kanu and Cole Brevard were paired together. Wide receiver rotation With Emmett Mosley V sidelined by injury, receivers other than Ryan Wingo, DeAndre Moore and Parker Livingstone must step up. Daylon McCutcheon has been circled as someone capable of doing that all the way back in spring. But more recently Sark has started to sing the praises of Kaliq Lockett, too. Lockett had a double-move on 4th down yesterday that drew high praise from the coaching staff. Aaron Butler did not receive as many opportunities yesterday as he did in the previous scrimmage. Running back Sark said it himself. He had planned all along to slow-play CJ Baxter’s return, to let him get acclimated to college ball and then push him along after Ohio State. But that thinking changed following last Saturday’s scrimmage and was further evidence enhanced by yesterday’s action. With Tre Wisner held out for part of practice, Baxter split some time with the 1st unit along with Christian Clark. Other backs eventually rotated in with that group as well. If Wisner and Baxter are 1a and 1b as Sark described them, then Clark is the clear no. 3. Offensive line What we learned on Saturday is that Texas is working Nick Brooks almost exclusively at right tackle currently. He made the move following Andre Cojoe’s season-ending injury. Brooks spent most of spring at left tackle. So perhaps this is Kyle Flood’s version of cross-training. Give the freshman heavy doses of both positions. Jaydon Chatman stepped in at left tackle for Trevor Goosby who was held out because of a hand injury. Chatman drew praise from Sark for his play. ** A couple more things: - I’m told that Arch Manning’s performance yesterday was much more “consistent”than a week ago. - Do not be surprised if freshmen Graceson Littleton and Kade Phillips are heavy rotational players in the secondary when SEC play begins. They’re “too talented not to”, according to a source.

  16. No, that’s the amazing thing is it’s all Ukrainian territory they are talking about. Russia is prepared (allegedly) to move out of of parts of occupied Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts in exchange for Kyiv handing over parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts that Russia is currently around 1k men per day trying to capture. The analogy here is that someone who stole your electronics and guns is now offering to give you back your own TV in exchange for some of your wife’s jewelry that he didn’t manage to steal yet. Media need to stop using the Russian and Trump framing.

  17. It's all good. I'm not changing, so people can react to me however they're going to. I find all of it entertaining. I write really long posts that aren't for everyone, so I feel like taking shots at me for it is very legitimate. What I'm getting a huge kick out of is doing the same kind of thing on SEC Rant. I mean, I'm an oddball with my long posts on here, but at least there are people who have known me for a long time who know that's what you're going to get with me. Over there I might as well be taking a huge dump in the middle of the dinner table.

  29. Trump requiring these Airmen to roll out the Red Carpet for a war criminal who started a war in Ukraine & abducted 20,000 Ukrainian kids (among other war crimes). Putin should have been arrested & imprisoned to be tried in international court just like Slobodan Milosevic. And Milosevic has alot in common with Putin, Trump, Kim Jong Un, and Orban.

  35. This may be a hot and unexpected take from me but it was appropriate in 2000 to take a pragmatic but firm and principled approach to Putin to see what could be accomplished. And in some ways this happened, Putin did attempt to make a half-hearted pivot West and position Russia as a GWOT partner and we did get stuff out of it. A lot of people forget how key the Russia facilitated Northern Distribution Network was to sustaining operations in Afghanistan all the way through the mid-teens. It was never on the table for him to be a democrat. What happened is that we fell down on the “pragmatic and firm” part in a lot of ways and Putin cannily exploited us by trying to make everything purely an issue of pragmatism. We also scored some own goals by blundering into foreign adventures where Russia could make itself either helpful or harmful at relatively low cost (Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iraq fallout). But even worse we had a bipartisan series of leaders who allowed him to do what he does everywhere: turn Russia relations into a political issue instead of a national security issue. Russia and how the United States relates to it have been important campaign issues since 2012, with the GOP and Dems switching sides based on how Putin wanted them to. And even before that, we had the very stupid and political reset button whipped out by HRC for a photo-op with Lavrov; thus forcing Obama into either an admission of failure or to keep fucking the chicken long past the point of enjoyment. This was an own goal long after GWB came around to McCain’s view; and then in 2012 you had Obama gleefully pretending like Russia was still a potential partner. This is all incredibly stupid. Russia should never be an issue in American elections; Russia is a solved but difficult problem that we keep trying to find different solutions for. Only Putin wins when Russia takes up this much oxygen in internal political discussions and its truly a grand strategic masterclass that he has put on by keeping a declining and brittle Russia on the front burner.
