  1. A friend asked for my script. Here's what I told the lady: I am a graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Law. I view this letter as extortion of the University. It is an unconscionable restraint on free speech and an free academic environment at the University. I believe it will lead to the exodus of quality professors, which will lead to a politicized learning environment, which will lead to quality students choosing to study at other universities. I have a 12 year old who is a Texan and is currently in a gifted and talented academic program and to whom I'm introducing colleges. I take him to campus, football games, lectures, etc. to promote the University to him. If the University signs on to this letter, I can no longer in good conscience promote UT as a valid option for him. If the University signs onto this letter, I will no longer spend a single dime in support of the University. Not academic donations, not UT exes, not a key chain with a Longhorn on it. I have been a donor since I got my first real job after the University. That ends the second the University submits to extortion. I will immediately start searching out academic institutions for my son that promote an academic environment free of political coercion.

  3. where is the shine? Shine wore off for Arch too? Shine wore off for Wisner? Shine wore off for Simmons? Shine wore off for Ant Hill Jr? You guys are such fucking pussies it's actually insane. 2 years of back to back playoff runs and you turn into a bunch of entitled titty babies who expect everything to be perfect from day 1 replacing an early round NFL draft OL and a receiving/TE corps that is doing incredible things in the league. This is a very young team, they had to find their identity, they had to really grow into the new leadership structure under Arch and a few others. They showed that they can improve and against a tier of competition that isn't "air" and that's after getting deflated and having their egos checked week 1 against Ohio State. I don't think you guys realize how bad that game was from a mental psyche perspective for the team, it wasn't just the loss it was the mental implosion of the entire organizational structure that had been built up from last offseason to this one. The continuity that they thought was there wasn't. Florida is a byproduct of this team figuring it's shit out and everyone wants to sit out here and act like it was an asswhipping. Texas was never more than 2-3 plays out of the game THE ENTIRE TIME. There was a point with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter where it was very possible for Texas to drive down the field and tie the game. Get your fucking shit together - wear burnt orange all over town, talk shit to every other fucking college football fan you see and get ready to absolutely blast Kentucky. In the wise words of T'Vondre Sweat: We Gon' Run it.

  4. This is a big reason why children need to have age-appropriate sex ed at a fairly young age, so that not only can they understand that what is happening to them is wrong and evil, but also be able to express themselves to other adults to let them know that it is happening. Sex ed does not condition children to have sex with each other at earlier ages. It conditions children to reject and report sex from adults. Getting rid of sex ed helps the pedos.

  6. There are few sadder clauses in the English language than "in Anahuac." At this point, he's doing these for two points: (1) to demonstrate the benefits of absolute loyalty to the regime (bow and blow me, and you can have immunity from all laws, inside tips to millions, etc.), and (2) showing the rest of the world that he is willing to use his power in ways that have no limits or guardrails. It's rubbing everyone else's nose in a pile of "I can do anything, even batshit insane and evil shit, and there's nothing you can do to stop me." Donald Trump is the most evil American in our lifetime.

  7. This. I simply cannot understand the appeal of cultural purity. I think it, like most positions at the heart of modern conservatism, is driven by insecurity. Conservatives are terrified of finding out that what they learned as children might be wrong. They fear adapting. Their brains treat new information as a virus. As soon as they are presented with facts that challenge them to reinterpret the world in a new light, the information immune system in their frightened little minds immediately sets to work rejecting it. “You can’t tell me Christopher Columbus was an asshole! He founded the USA and gave us the Second Amendment in Declaration of Independence!” By far my most common reaction to conservative perspectives is this: Grow up. You’re supposed to be adults. The world is more complicated and diverse and beautiful than you were taught in kindergarten. Time to act like a god damned adult and face facts. Or, you know, maybe vote for a bunch of Nazis because Meemaw and Peepaw never taught you about the Requerimiento and tikka masala.

  10. I dated a French Tunisian girl. It was a lot of fun (also great food). Plus, she spoke four languages and was great fun and help to travel around. I remember her on the phone with her sister speaking French/Arabic, talking to me in English, then giving Spanish tourists directions in Spanish in Bordeaux all within about 30 seconds. She told me she learned Spanish by listening to Shakira while going to grad school in Mexico, of all things, and English by taking English lectured college classes in France. Agree that mixing of cultures is the best thing in the world and it has greatly influenced my life experiences for the better. Honestly can't imagine my life without it. Wish others would get with the fucking program.

  11. the bottom line is this: donald trump does things on a weekly, if not daily basis, that would have gotten obama or biden impeached and ousted. and that’s how this authoritarian takeover happens: normalizing fascism daily. i’m sick to my stomach that we are where we are.

  16. Hard, hard, hard disagree and the statistics back me up. Across cultures, religions, continents rising levels of income, educational attainment, employment, and economic opportunity goes right along with declining birthrates and lower/later marriages. And that even holds true within countries— higher income and options means fewer kids. It holds true despite incentives and benefits to mothers; and in fact the most generous governments see some of the lowest birthrates. A lot going on with this but one of the big reasons is introducing other options, choices, and stability for women. They can afford to be selective with mates and when they do select, there is a preference for high-investment parenting into fewer children. The data are pretty clear, for the most part early marriage and lots of kids (and for that matter lots of kids) is poverty behavior.

  17. That would be a pretty big change of narrative considering as recently as last spring, we heard praises about Cruz in practice, and that the staff loved the guy. Now, that being said, it's been made plain for all to see that the staff's concept of "elite roster talent" isn't exactly par with the reality of the world, so Cruz could easily fall in that category of guys the staff raved about but in fact are Meh. But the counterpoint is that we didn't hear shit about Connor Stroh as being even a warm body till he started, and then we got a burst of 995 bullshit about him playing his way into a starting role with the opportunity. In other words, we don't know shit about fuck.

  27. We had a yard sale one time, and there's zero reason to put price tags on anything, because they just make people ask for a lower price. "Will you take $2.50 for this chair?" Me: "Dude, it's only $3..." I told my wife that we should have put $1000 tags on everything, because someone might have offered $900 for that colander just to get a deal.

  32. Ok, so revert the wealthy tax rate back to where it was in 1961 and put that money into healthcare and wage equality. So Americans can afford to have children again.
