The Guitar Pron Thread

I'm struggling with a potential purchase.  And I have no idea how I would explain this to my wife if I make a move on one of these.

Either this for $1900, it's a rare 4003 with a cieloglo  finish and it is in mint condition.  I have a  black one already.

Or

A single humbucker Dargie Delight for $1800.  Only 25 of these made.  I have a double humbucker Dargie already but these things are very cool.  They rarely go up for sale.

Geddy Lee all the way.

Last time I bought a guitar it was sort of a spur of the moment deal. Went in to buy a music stand. Came out with a new Taylor. Was talking to the Mrs. later and said I bought a new guitar. She said how much? I said do I really have to tell you? She said yep. I said $1900. She said, well that could have been way worse I suppose. Do you like it?

Just sayin....

Welp, I just pulled the trigger and will have a NGD waiting for me when I get home next week. Since I'll have to wait I will let y'all speculate with the hint being that it will be my 8th Gibson, 9th if you count the lap steel. The few of you who know my collection might know the glaring gap in the lineup. This one will fill it perfectly.

I'm looking forward to sharing pics in a week.

Yeah, it snowballed. She got sick at 16 weeks. Spent 3k at the emergency vet, because, you know, emergency vet. Then got sent to a specialist that supposedly could take care of it. After 3k there, he was like, you need to go to A&M. They operated on her this week to the tune of 7k.

She's a great dog.

It did lead to some good times with a vet tech half my age, so there's that.

I'd still rather have 13k in gear, though.

I know the next guitar....... So I'm out of the contest. Can't wait.

Anyone have a suggestion on jazz books? I know very little about jazz guitar but I found out my new group I'm playing in is interested in jazzy stuff Things like everything off of Willie's "Stardust" to start with. And also Elvis stuff... Just more jazzy versions. First practice is Sunday.

I also need to buy a small, portable, handheld recording unit.

So... Fender bought the Bigsby brand and assets. Very interesting.

Fender acquires Bigsby from Gretsch

Quote

Fender has announced its acquisition of the Bigsby brand and its assets from Fred Gretsch Enterprises.

The company will run as a standalone business under Fender Musical Instruments Corp’s Speciality Brands, which include Jackson, Charvel, EVH Gear and Gretsch.

Gretsch, of course, frequently features Bigsby vibratos on its guitars, and the storied musical instrument company’s own relationship with Fender has been in place since 2002.

Quote

“We are excited to acquire Bigsby and add to our esteemed portfolio of specialty brands,” said Jeff Cary, Senior Vice President of FMIC Specialty Brands.

“There is such a rich history with the vibratos, and a mystique around the guitars, pedals and steel instruments that is fascinating. Fred and Dinah Gretsch have been wonderful owners and we look forward to working with them to ensure a smooth transition.”

“Paul Bigsby, Ted McCarty, Dinah and Fred Gretsch and Fender Musical Instruments Corp. all have one thing in common, an unquestioning dedication to product excellence over the long haul,” said Fred Gretsch. “We congratulate team Fender on this strategic acquisition.”

Does this mean we’ll see Bigsbys popping up on more Fender designs? We wouldn’t say no to a reissue of the Cabronita Telecaster...

EHX is putting out their own strings. These guys almost never strike out, even with their non-effects products (speakers, microphones, and especially their vacuum tubes), so I'm going to snag some pairs and see how they sound.

NAMM 2019: Well, we weren’t expecting this. Electro-Harmonix, famed effects manufacturer, has turned its hand to strings with the announcement of its debut electric sets.

Made in the USA “by a premier string manufacturer”, the packs feature wound strings that have been precision-wrapped with round nickel-played steel onto a high-carbon hexagon-shaped steel core. Plain strings, meanwhile, are made from the same high-carbon steel as the hex cores.

EHX claims the high-quality steels and computer-controlled winding process results in strings that deliver improved intonation, tuning and sustain.

Quote

The strings’ ball-ends are colour-coded, and each set comes in a corrosion-inhibiting bag. Sounds suspiciously like another New York-based string manufacturer we know…

“We used our experience in sonic innovation to create strings that will please the most discerning guitar players,” enthuses EHX Founder, Mike Matthews. “They’re long-lasting and deliver lightning-fast playability with great tone and intonation. Try a set!”

There’s no word on pricing yet, but anyone after more info would be well-advised to visit EHX. We’re hoping there will be a few pedals announced before the show, too...

Supro guitar offering - 1961 style Dual Tone

Quote

NAMM 2019: Supro has announced a reissue of its 1961 hardtail Dual Tone, which featured heavily on David Bowie’s Reality album and tour.

This new version features a number of tweaks to the Bowie-favoured formula, including a 12”-radius pau ferro fretboard on the 24.75”- scale set maple neck.

The guitar’s mahogany body features a tummy cut and ergonomic neck joint, while hardware includes a reverse stair step tailpiece, tune-o-matic bridge, butterfly tulip tuning pegs and a matched set of period-correct Vistatone pickups.

Supro is proud to introduce the David Bowie 1961 Dual Tone. One of two Supro Dual Tone guitars owned and loved by Bowie, this hard-tail version was the first Dual Tone that David acquired, just prior to recording the Reality album. This Supro Dual Tone became such an integral part of the sound and imagery of the Reality album that David purchased a second one for the ensuing Reality Tour

I just remembered.  I was super drunk at a gig at a guitar store ages ago.  I bought a project Supro Dual Tone they had hanging on the wall (it wasn't for sale).  But drink me wouldn't take "no" for an answer.  It's been in the closet for ages because I couldn't find parts for it.  Plus the neck was messed up.  I'll post picks.

Cien por ciento.

But the guys at the store were even bigger dicks.  It was a small shop/venue/bar near my hometown.  There'd never been a music store when I was a kid there, so I wanted to spend some money to make sure it was open for the next guitar lovin' kid.  I kept pestering them to sell it after the set was over but I was still hanging around drinking.  They kept, "Oh,  you don't want that old thing."  They were probably right.  Finally, I got them to sell it to me.  Not crazy money, but not insignificant to younger Chad.  When the deal was done they immediately showed me online that, essentially I'd over paid and they'd fooled me (they hadn't).  I could've had one in pristine shape for a little more than what they sold this parts guitar to me for.  I was like, "Why did you guys tell me that?  I don't care, but I was trying to do y'all a solid, not be insulted."  Owner got it at that point, and couldn't look me in the eye the rest of the night.  He didn't apologize though.  Anyhow, I collected parts for it for a while, then realized the tuning keys were nearly impossible to get and the neck was going to be a pain to repair.  Put it away and haven't thought much about it in years until now.  That shop's been out of business for years.

I'm kinda stoked about this. I doubt it will effect Gretsch since Fender handles everything for them anyway. I hope it leads to more Tele's being offered with a B3. I love a B3 on a Telecaster, obviously that's how I built mine.

On the other hand, I've always liked the rare Les Paul and 335 fitted with a Bigsby, I hope those don't vanish.

Moby Ric needs the Rick.

AUTF has a Firebird on the way.

jj’s daughter is the truth.

I need to post pics of the Strat as soon as i can make some sense out of my place after having been away for over a month. Holy shitsnacks, way more beautiful than I imagined. And I have a vivid imagination. Neck is almost white. Against the olive it’s downright striking. And slicker than owl shit from what little I’ve played it. Damn good decision.
