Trading messages with the boy. He says he feels generally fine, mostly he’s bored.
But, the cute Dutch girl he’s friends with who lives downstairs is also positive, so maybe they can hang out together.
Pretty sure he has a crush on her, so I hope he guts up and makes a move.
Quarantine might be as long as ten days. If he tests negative soon, he can shorten it, but we’re not expecting that will happen at this rate.

It lasts too long and you might being seeing a completely different positive test.

I'll be praying for your boy. He's gone from bentos to Dutch girls in such a short time.

He already broke up with the cute and cool Swedish gal who was super into him (no idea what he was thinking). Then last week, he spent a coupla days in Strasbourg at the invitation of and visiting a French girl we didn’t even know about. So….he’s doing alright.
But I really think he has a crush on the Dutch gal, and now it’s on HIM to make the move, and he should gut up.

Holy shit.  You guys really are going to just pretend that Covid was the Dem's fault and it was never a big deal aren't you?

Who is saying COVID was the Dem's fault and never a big deal on this thread?   If you are bitching about people saying COVID is no longer a big deal on the back side of the Omicron wave if you are vaccinated and/or have a prior infection, then yeah, there are plenty saying that.   Like it or not that's a majority opinion in this country.

I don't remember what I said the over/under is on federal mask mandates being lifted (5/1?) but I'm leaning towards the under.  Because yeah, people are done.  When my NY clients (that are almost always hesitant to ever talk politics and were cautious as hell during peak COVID) are actively bitching about getting harassed for forgetting to put on a mask when walking into a building I know the tide has turned.

it's like nobody remembers what happened to the guy after he yelled at tommy.

Exactly I’ve never gotten that phrase as some sort of insult. He tells tommy to go get his shine box, and Tommy leaves and comes and beats the ever living shit out of him and eventually kills him with a knife and gun in the trunk of Henry’s car.

Go get your shine box indeed.

Tell that to Stacey Abrams.  I cannot BELIEVE that she would put all of these children at risk like this.  For shame!

So wear your mask? I’m sure you’ll get Covid somehow, someway if you haven’t already.

A year from now when you’re one of the 1% who looks ridiculous because you’re wearing your mask alone in your car , the rest of us will welcome you back to the sane world when you rip that worthless thing off.

The thing about the mask debate is both sides are right.   By and large they aren't a big fucking deal and there has been way too much bitching and moaning about them from the right.   They are also largely worthless and complete Covid Theatre because anywhere that has a "mandate' of any kind doesn't require N95's or KN95's.  So the whole "you are putting me at risk" bitching and moaning from the left is also ridiculous because they can just wear an N95 and it doesn't fucking matter.

There have only been 2 instances the entire pandemic I've been annoyed with the mask rule.  A Vegas casino blackjack table when I was admonished for moving it down to sip my beer (so I took my $200 in winnings and went back to the bar area where of course there is zero mask requirement, go figure) and at a recent musical in Dallas where my wife and I had to pound drinks pre-show after learning you couldn't bring them into theatre because of mask "at all times" requirement.

So I guess that means I'm largely only anti-mask mandates to the extent they impact my ability to booze.

are these people who got j&j?  did they get their first shot last month after waiting a year because reasons?  did they get one shot several months ago and are just like, "i'm all set"?

This I can subscribe to. Way too much bitching about it on both sides. It’s not that big of a deal to have to wear a mask so stop bitching about it. On the other hand, unless it’s a legit mask that actually helps it’s not that big of a deal not too. Bottom line though is it doesn’t hurt to wear one unless masky hurt facey.

Vaccines and social distancing on the other hand can and do work, with the former having very little consequences and the latter definitely does. Social distancing by its very own name hurts society, so should only be done when necessary. I think unfortunately it was but in contrast to the vaccine, at least that is up for debate.

Cnn’s dr leana wen, “also the science has changed…we also know about one-way masking: the idea that even if people around you are not wearing masks, if you wear a high quality mask, that also protects you -the wearer- too

brand new science, bro. if i was screeching hysterically about your lack of mask and labeled you an anti-vaxxer, it was from a position of care. but now the science has changed, so we’re totally pals now.

The people who get labeled as anti Vaxers are the idiots who oppose the vaccine and post vaccine misinformation.  Has nothing to do with masks. Those anti mask people are just being whiny bitches.

You can keep trying to equate the two if you want but it’s not fooling anyone.

yeah, the problem with the evolving data is the evolving narratives, finger-pointing, and high-fiving.

i casually listened to joe rogan's "apology" the other day, so forgive me if i heard it wrong, but he was going through all the shit that "if you said it 6 months ago you'd be banned" or some such nonsense.  basically implying that a bunch of stuff once thought false was now magically true and all these prophets got falsely accused.  while there are some isolated incidents of this with a brand new virus (novel if you will), the people who yelled about it 6 months ago weren't "ahead of the curve" on the facts, they just got ~lucky when the clock stopped.

one of the several he listed was about cloth masks.  saying if you claimed cloth masks were shitty 6 months ago you'd get in trouble, but now everyone is saying it.  this is both true and absolutely fucking false.  generally people who were bitching about cloth masks 6 months ago were bitching about all masks 6 months ago.  those people rogan is talking about aren't "correct" now that cloth masks are being exposed as "kinda pointless when n-95's are an option".

people take the weirdest victory laps.

One notable exception is the lab leak theory. Authorities (including Fauci, Collins) knew it was the likely source from the beginning but smeared people that suggested it. Nothing’s changed about that science.

I would also humbly suggest that people who believed/predicted that natural immunity would be durable and similar to vaccination were more than just lucky when the clock stopped. That was just basic science/immunology.

And nobody asked, but I was likely vaccinated before most of you. Just to preempt some inevitable distortion of characterization….

Look we all know (or at least I do) you’ve evolved over time and now claim to just be anti vax mandate when your past handle was clearly just anti vax. You’ve now softened your position to adapt to the clear sentiments of the board. It’s good trolling tactics I suppose.

There's no fucking "feel" to it. They are useful. If you want to argue that they're not useful enough to warrant all the mandates and hand-wringing--especially on kids--then I'll listen. But going with the "anything short of an N95 is a charade" angle just shows your ass.

You didn’t answer the question but ok. My focus on natural immunity and side effects in young people going back to the summer was always based on the fact that I knew people were going to be coerced or mandated wrongfully and unnecessarily.

This goes without even delving into vaccine passports which are a much bigger picture concern.

Masks are useful. If you like them, wear them.

Mask mandates are a charade, for a stupidly-high number of reasons, including the silliness between distinction of standing up vs sitting down, “eating” vs not eating, requirement for then outside, no real enforcement on masking quality and consistency of wear, etc.

All pales to the *practical* fact that by and large, if you mask yourself, youve reaped 99% of the masking benefit….(which is now brand new science).

And you need to lift a mountain to get full compliance from everyone else to get the remaining 1%.  The juice is not worth the screeching - which was absolutely a thing

Some people live to dunk on other people. Claim victory any time you're right and just forget about any time you're wrong. It's like gamblers who love to talk about how much money they made while leaving out how much they lost.

See this is largely a reasonable take and I agree with a lot of it. If we had plenty of n95 masks at the beginning of the pandemic, I'd at least understand the complaints against mandates back then. We didn't. We had cloth masks that provide enough effectiveness to slow transmission by the wearer, but didn't do that much to protect the wearer from exposure. To make them work, everybody had to wear them. We now have vaccines and plenty of n95 masks, so it makes sense roll back mask mandates. I still think vaccine mandates make a shit ton of sense and would save another 200,000 Americans from dying this year. But apparently we don't care about that anymore. I don't get it.

It sounds like you would have respected mask mandates more if they were harsher and more rigid. Why do I doubt that?

ok, so let me see if i am following this logic...

people wearing masks are getting the benefit of the mask, which is protection against a contagious disease.

so the more people wearing masks, the less the contagious disease spreads.

the less the contagious disease spreads, the fewer people get sick, hospitalized, or die.

therefore masks are...a charade?

if what you're actually saying is that "mask mandates are pointless because the nation is like one big swimming pool and there are idiots in so many states that peeing in california will eventually reach people in texas because state borders aren't literal borders and we're only as collectively smart as the dumbest among us", then yes, i would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

the other misleading part of all of this is that people who were doing everything they could to stay safe (wearing 2 masks, getting n95's, getting vaccinated) were also the people staying home, staying away from large (or any) crowds, and so forth.  the people that were all crowding together like morons were the same people not wearing masks, not getting vaccinated, spreading anti-vax nonsense, and so on.

tough to measure stupidity but i think we'll get there eventually.
