Why are you guys so protective of Mamdani? It’s super weird.

How is Mamdani a nepobaby?

His mother is Mira Nair- a world famous, Academy award winning movie director. His father is Mahmoud Mamdani, a Columbia professor and one of the most important public intellectuals in the world.

AND, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not as though he’s risen from obscurity.

That sounds like privilege more than nepo baby since he's not in the same profession as either of this parents. Semantics, I guess.

1 of 2 things. Either we've already seen the last free election in our lifetimes or Dems will squeak back into power in a few years and we'll get the spiritual successor to Biden's term.

When the other side of this is reached, and it will be because again history is a REALLY GOOD guide as to what is going to transpire, the first thing Democrats need to do is purge all the olds that want to reconcile with the fascists. The second thing they need to do is completely abolish the Republican Party from existing. The time for working across the aisle is gone and it's an antiquated idea from what is now another time in American history. They are going to have to go General Sherman scorched earth on the whole apparatus. None of that party can be allowed to move forward. Anyone who currently holds elected office as a Republican/Cult Member has to be barred from ever serving in politics again (At any level) and needs to be on a permanent probation for the rest of their lives. The consequences for destroying America have to be harsh and a reminder to future generations of what you have to do when confronted by future Stephen Miller clones or people like TFG and his little couch fiend buddy.

We are a good long way away from that time, but when the time comes it'll take leadership willing to bring the hammer and not just empty rhetoric. I think the suffering this country is about to go through as a collective will make what happens after this bout against fascism be okay and understood to be necessary.

This is just another example in a long list of examples of mainstream Democrats who are considered "good messengers" that are just completely unable or unwilling to read the room. This mealy-mouthed garbage that comes out of Buttigieg's mouth when asked about Gaza should be an immediate disqualifier, considering the overwhelming support for the Democrat base on the side of Palestinians.

The question is posed at 41:28

The guy whose whole deal is supposed to be smart political opportunism can’t see where the party will be on this in 2028. For fuck’s sake. This is like Obama deciding it’s still best to support the war in Iraq in 2005.

Man.  I know you said this will take a long time to coalesce, but it just seems so unlikely, considering where we are right now.  I think there is a better chance of the country splitting into two nations.

Yeah. We don’t get to a purge mentality without a Great Depression/civil War level event. If the GOP for some reason doesn’t understand they’ve jailbroken the system and actually allows for elections they end up losing, any Dem regime will just be more of the same delaying action we’ve seen since Reagan.

Many comparisons to the rise of Hitler have been made, but it might be better to think that we’re in about 1857 of this particular disaster cycle. Maybe even 1853. It hasn’t gotten bad enough to believe we can heal anytime soon.

Of course a broader view of history points to authoritarian and oligarchic control being the default in most countries. We’ve been spoiled by humanistic progress, and maybe we’re just reverting to the mean.

It certainly doesn’t feel like a real resistance is forming. Just ticking boxes, as RomaVicta put it, along with influencer grifting.

The splitting up won’t happen. A lot of things seem unlikely when you’re in the midst of the storm, but there’s always the other side of it. Human beings, as tribal as we are, will eventually decide this whole fascism thing didn’t make life better and eventually the whole thing will come crashing down. How long it takes to get there is just guesswork because the populace and how it eventually reacts is the key to the length of it..

As someone that has been a Buttigieg supporter for a long time, I completely agree with you. This is a bunch of bullshit, and the other clips I've seen from this interview are super disappointing as well.

The powers that be keep wanting to pretend we're in 2012, when all it took to win elections was a strong orator. Fortunately some people are beginning to wake up, like Gene Wu.

This.  All rules, norms, and old ways are gone.   Dead.

Fighting based on policy, ideas, and the ability to communicate them is like the British army lining up for an orderly battle when the enemy is picking you off from the trees with squirrel guns.

There are no rules anymore. None. Correction.  There is one rule: win.  And a corollary rule: once you win, do not cede power.  Ever.

The playing field and rules have been set by the opposition.  So be it.  Play to win.  It is LITERALLY the only thing that matters.

The British lost the war after a Prussian turned the Continental Army into a real fighting force and the French blockade and assistance. Most engagements were with line infantry. The citizen soldier in the bushes is mostly a myth.

Battle of Concord says get fucked, orderly Brits.

And I say get fucked, all old rules and norms, and all Republicans.  Go after them using every tool you have.  Attack asymmetrically.  Ruin their businesses, their families, their personal lives.  Lie about them, plant rumors about them, use all power you have against them.  Weaponize EVERYTHING.  Those are the rules now.  Use them to your advantage.

It is honestly difficult to imagine a better scenario for the GOP than the Dems debating “who is correct on Palestine” as part of 2028, FFS.

Foreign policy in general is a big loser for generals and this one in particular is the biggest loser.

Yep, fuck Palestine. Shit doesn’t matter, just win elections. Dems will eat themselves alive over it making it easier for GOP.

NYC is the textbook example of a place that it is rich enough and deep enough with human capital that it’s almost impossible to fuck it up unless you’re a committed ideologue. All you need is “good enough” and things will buff out.

Eric Adams is a super corrupt moron and he’s managed to make NYC mostly better by confining himself to grifting off of Erdogan.

That's all you need to know about the state of the Democratic Party.

Chuck Schumer has been winning elections to the U.S Senate for 26 years and elections to the House since before I was born, so I’ll need another argument for how his political instincts suck.

It’s really bizarre to me how much shit Democrats shovel onto their most successful representatives.

Once you get to his position your instincts (in terms of relection) matter a lot less and winning elections is much easier.

Because he’s a dumb mother fucker in politics in this landscape. Yale used to win a lot of national championships but it’s 2025.

Yep. Being impressed at him winning re-election is akin to marveling at the Globetrotter's W/L record. Same goes for every statewide official in Texas, once they're past their first primary.

I mostly agree. I’m not worried about Mamdani, I just think he’ll wind up making no meaningful progress on the housing shortage in NY.

That said, I’m glad I don’t live in a city with a strong mayor system. The bigger the city is, the less sense it makes.

I also don’t like the “strong president” system.

The guy wants to be a Senator from New York and he’s wildly successful at that and delivers for his constituents. The entire gripe here from John Oliver is that he tries to triangulate what he should do based on where he needs votes.

He is responsible for the party's worst approval rating in 30 years.

Cool, how does he combat republicans now? He doesn’t and see above. He and Pelosi have turned the working class party into an elitist celebrity driven party.

Welp, it looks like I was wrong and Doggett and Casar are likely to wind up facing each other in a primary for D10. That’s a shame.
Doggett is still extremely effective, but he really should pass the torch to Sarah Eckhart, and Casar should sack up and break the gerrymander in the new District 35.
