TAMUK being sandwiched between a UTSA program on a roll and now a UTRGV program that is looking to get off strong is going to have to do something to jolt the program.

And both of them are FCS level while TAMUK is trying to hang on at DII.  I’m a DII fan, I think it’s one of the more fun levels of the sport and is the sweet spot of what college athletics can be for a student athlete. But it seems that division is having a hard time, you either go up to FCS/D1 or you go DIII.

You are pretty much spot on about DII football.   The transfer portal has hurt the division.   Not so much that D2 players are transferring to other D2 schools.  FBS/ D1 players do not have to sit out a year like they had to pre transfer portal.   Many of your D2 players would pick up transfers fro D1 because if they transferred down, they didn’t have to sit out.   So it was easier to attract some decent talent to come your way with kids who were looking to start or were  having some adjustment issues at a bigger school.  Now it’s wide open for them to go where they wish especially in the mid major ranks and FCS schools.

TAMUK as a school is staring at oblivion much less the football program. UTRGV is bleeding  TAMUKs enrollment and Sharp has gutted TAMUKs engineering and ag departments. So the two biggest draws to Kingsville are gone at this point and the surrounding area is just isn’t producing enough high school grads to keep the school filled.

I would agree TAMUK is stuck in the mud waiting for John Sharp to try to push the merger again with A&M Corpus, modeled after UTPA in Edinburg, merging with UT Brownsville.   Not sure UTRGV is bleeding according to this

He meant UTRGV is taking away potential students from TAMUK.

No, I meant that UTRGV is taking a massive chunk of TAMUK student body in that being valley kids that want to stay close to home. Sharp has also gutted Tamuk and all the other TAMU system schools through state politics by forcing whatever state agency or department he can under the banner of TAMU and turning College Station into a Black Hole from which no money or research grants can escape. TAMUK's bread and butter used to be valley kids plus kids coming for TAMUK's engineering and agriculture both of which have been devastated by UTRGV and CSTAT, add in South Texas having a terminal population outside of Corpus and things look fucking grim for TAMUK. Hell even the King Ranch itself is undergoing a shake up with the Clements being put out to pasture with the Kelbergs, if Sharp get's his hands on the King Ranch Institute then TAMUK will have literally nothing left.

I don't think not-so-sharp can fully get his hands on the Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute because I believe that endowment is for TAMUK

he fucked them hard trying to cut their natural gas engineering undergrad degree right at the time Eagle Ford was exploding, but he had to do a reverse on that

he has fucked them on horticulture and the citrus program that still "belongs" to TAMUK, but most of the Weslaco researchers are under the USDA or under the TAMU Ag Experiment Station so not a part of TAMUK

in the past TAMU-CS was pretty much closing out their wildlife science PhD program especially as it related to deer and other wild game common in South Texas especially right after the Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute was really heavily funded, but they have done a hard reverse on that as well

there is also TAMU-SA that was a part of TAMUK and that was basically built off of TAMUK until the state finally bought land for a full campus and SA broke away from K......that actually helped the UT System though and especially UTSA because it allowed UTSA to move from being open enrollment (as the only public university in the SA metro area) to jacking their admissions standards up to a level much closer to similar state universities in Texas

the real ass fucking for TAMUK was when that idiot irma lerma derma verma rangel fought to get a pharmacy program for "South Texas" and immediately allowed it to be placed under the TAMU Health Science Center instead of the Kingsville Campus even thought it is located on the Kingsville Campus.....at that time the HSC was not under the administration of college station, but not long after that 100% of the HSC was moved under the administration of college station

the highest enrollment for TAMUK was 9,726 in 2016 and in 2020 it is 6,915 (for some reason 2021 and 2022 are not available)

the UTRGV merger was approved in 2013 and TAMU-SA was approved in 2009 as stand alone and in 2016 as a 4 year school (vs upper division enrollment)

so those two factors probably played a part in what is happening to TAMUK, but TAMU-CC peaked in 2017 with 12,236 and they are at 10,820 in 2021

of course not-so-sharp fucked up the merger of those two schools that would have saved them a ton of overhead and that would have merged two universities without a great deal of overlap (besides core departments that can easily be administered from one or the other campus) and a lot of very complimentary programs that would have fit together very well.....because of course no one trust him especially those at TAMUK and TAMU-CC is worried they will start getting shitted on like TAMUK has been for a long time

it is pretty pathetic when your goal is to have an engineering college at your main degree factory with a larger enrollment than a COMBINATION of two of your other larger system universities

and in fact the desire to have a college of engineering at the main degree factory that is larger than any of your other system universities and that would be only very slightly smaller than a combination of the two largest universities in your system (Commerce and Tarleton) is extremely pathetic

All very good points and pretty much spot on.   I would differ on one thing though.   They are not crapping on all the System Schools.    Tarleton seems to be getting the love both on the academic and athletic side of the coin    But this probably has to do with the fact they've been part of the system for decades.  One thing for sure, UT certainly treats it's system school much better than aggy.  Even the outpost schools in Odessa and Tyler get more love than aggy schools in some larger population centers such as Corpus, Laredo and Amarillo.    aggy likes to take credit for alot of the construction that tool place at Corpus, Kingsville and Laredo, but alot of that was due to litigation that took place in the 1990's by MALDEF.   True, UT had to do somethings down in the RGV and El Paso,  but after all the points in the settlement had been achieved, UT kept  investing in those schools and others.

Really interesting divert to the academic discussion.  Wondering if the disparity in how UT system and TAMU System treat their system schools will play a part in the decision for SFA - Nacogdoches

D2 used to get D1 players stuck in the depth chart transferring down because they did not have to sit a year.  Now they can transfer to a D1 with a hole in the depth chart and not sit a year.

They also used to get some of the academic washouts from D1 transferring down but I don't think that happens anymore.

Tarleton is the new fallback school for the A&M rejects and it’s become the hick party school for all the suburban kids playing country who don’t have the balls to go to Tech with the real west Texas party crowd.

Pretty much.   Like SWT , now Texas State was the same for UT rejects or dropouts.  Probably still to some extent.

Looks like they have picked a HC. New Braunfels Canyon coach Travis Bush

Spoiler
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has confirmed that current New Braunfels Canyon High School head coach Travis Bush will be named the first head coach in UTRGV program history.
Cory HogueCory HogueDec 11 11:09 am

Sources tell Dave Campbell’s Texas Football that Travis Bush will be named the coach for the UTRGV football program. Bush has spent the last two seasons as head coach at New Braunfels Canyon High School.

Bush has an extensive coaching history in Texas college football. He began his coaching career at San Marcos High School following his career as a wide receiver at Texas State.

After spending three seasons as a graduate assistant at TCU, Bush returned to his alma mater to coach wide receivers. He was named co-offensive coordinator for the Bobcats in 2007. He served three years in that position before becoming the offensive coordinator at UTSA, where he recruited now UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque.

Bush moved to the University of Houston and served as running backs coach in 2012 before transitioning to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars. He was promoted to associate head coach during his final two seasons in Houston.

A native of Portland, Texas, he transitioned to the high school ranks and was head coach at Seguin from 2016-2020. Bush became the head coach for New Braunfels Canyon in 2021 and led the Cougars to a 9-2 record and an appearance in the playoffs this year.

Bush’s first head coaching job at the collegiate level will entail building the UTRGV program from the ground up. The Vaqueros are expected to play their first game in 2025, with their first recruiting class coming in 2024. UTRGV recently announced it would spend $30 million to build football facilities, including a 48,000-square-foot performance center with a weight room, two practice fields (one covered), team meeting rooms, office space, and a sports medicine facility.

Sucks they didn’t incorporate 956 ALV into the design somehow

Meh

Looks like a TXHSFB helmet with the state silhouette. Too many HS teams have it. Yeah, I know, state pride. "Rally the Valley" is good slogan, though.

Well in that case they need to bring back PanAm! Always thought it was such a cool name.

They didn’t want to piss off the 106 total UT-Brownsville alumni that existed. The much larger community wanted to keep the UTPA name and Broncs mascot. But I actually did think UTB had the cooler mascot with Ocelots. But the UTRGV name is growing on the younger people so it’ll probably stay for a while.

What, are they going to play that Mexican college team that normally plays high schools over and over in 2024?

Monterrey tech also has a feeder private high school and their team is who comes and plays the American high schools. Their college level team is called the Borregos Salvajes (Wild Rams… high school team has same name iirc) and they’d skullfuck any American high school team. They’re the class of Mexico football and I’d say they’re about the level of an American NCAA D2 team. Not quite FCS level though. They’d really be a perfect scrimmage opponent for UTRGV.

PanAm pumped out a ton of hs / ms coaches back in the day, especially hs baseball coaches. That program has a long legacy.

I highly doubt any Mexican HS Team, even recruited nationwide, would beat a “solid” 4-5A TXHS team, let alone the 6A’s of just North Shore, Katy, or any team from greater D/FW.

I referee Thursday JV night games between like Smithson Valley vs Cibolo Steele, or what have you. Those “Thursday night JV teams” would beat most of the 3-4A teams that I officiate the next night, just based on depth of athletes that they have. Jimmy’s and Joe’s - they have them and the smaller schools, they don’t!

Hook’em!!!
