In Texas .357 or .44mag make more sense.  Animals are not too big, the ammo is much cheaper, especially using .38special, and it's just more fun to shoot.  45-70 can get expensive.

Meh.  Just makes slightly larger holes.  We shot all kinds of shit at our place:  old toilet, refrigerator, cinder blocks, propane tanks, etc.  Years back we had a .50bmg.

.308 with ball ammo will do more damage to a car than a 45-70.

Agreed.

I’d go .357 but I’m getting a .44 from my uncle so that’s the route I’ll take.

Gun accessories talk

I would like to procure a high quality leather strap for the Marlin with bandolier style bullet holders in 357mag.  Black with some custom name engraving.

Any leads on that type of strap.

Something like this

Looks like the unthinkable may actually happen. Suppressors removed from the NFA.  Thank you Lord Trump.

GUN SILENCERS: Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) had already won the elimination of a $200 transfer tax on gun silencers. He got more on Wednesday: It further strikes the $200 tax on the manufacture of gun silencers and otherwise removes them from the regulatory purview of the National Firearms Act.

None on SBR's. It should be noted that the NFA is part of the tax code,  so removing suppressors from it can be done under reconciliation. The definition of a firearm under the GCA is not part of the tax code and still includes suppressors as firearms. That can't be changed under reconciliation.

We’ll see if it makes it through the Senate. I don’t care about the $200. I care about all of the other shit, mainly going on their list of people that have them.

Honestly, I don't care if they do or not.   But I do like not being on another government registry.

@Elvis hit up Durbs_Leather on Instagram, he’s in Georgetown. Makes damn nice leather products.

Thanks for the recommendation.  I talked to Matt at Durbs.  He is really cool.  I sent a few pictures and I am also working on a drawing for the strap.  This will be fun!

You’ve been able to get a 300BLK kit like that for a while.

Compare .357 to .45-70 retail ($$$) ammunition and you’ll have your answer.  .45-70 isn’t for “plinking” at cans and shit down range.

I used to reload .38s for my Son for Cowboy action shooting.  The .38/.357 platform is so manageable to the specs that you want is amazing.  I’d have to adjust the overall length of the rounds of his .357 lever action or it would jam up if the rounds were too short (lighter pistol rounds).  After a couple shooting sessions I understood that the .38s needed to be the length of a standard.357.

I still have hundreds of “pistol only” .38 special for target/Cowboy shooting.

1873 or other similar toggle link action?

1860 and 1873 lines (.45LC) were what we shot.  But the .357 was a replica 1882 model fitted for .357 that was finicky on OAL or the rounds fed into it, trying to lower into .38 for my pre-teen son at the time for recoil purposes. Meaning trying to cycle it really fast for a novice.  Cowboy action shooting is all about speed and accuracy on target at a not too great distance, but one must move the sights to other targets down range.

Just picked up my newest toy. Put a Surefire x300 Turbo and Holosun EPS on it. Went back and forth on the optic with the EPS vs Trijicon RCR vs Aimpoint Acro. Wanted an enclosed emitter for sure. If it sucks I’ll throw it on my p226 and get the RCR

And then there's my 444 Marlin. Glad I loaded up on brass, bullets and powder way back when. Bought 600 1x-fired RP cases on ebay way back when for $99. Add to that several boxes of Remington factory ammo and I'm good, but not plinking with it. Wondering if Ruger will ever do a limited run of them ... maybe through Grice or Lipsey's.

There’s nothing wrong with that EPS.

Also that’s the test bed for the new gun.

Basically the bill zeros out the transfer and making taxes for suppressors as well as removing them from the definition of a firearm under the NFA, which is part of the tax code. The GCA of 1968 still lists suppressors and suppressor parts in its definition of firearms, which is in a different section of the Code of Federal Regulations. So suppressors and suppressor parts would still require a 4473.

But since this is a reconciliation bill, Senators can challenge provisions that they don't think are related to the revenue under the Byrd Rule. If the Senate Parliamentarian determines they don't qualify, it takes 60 votes to overrule. Lowering the tax to zero should qualify, but removing them from the definition of a firearm in the NFA may not survive. It does have a chance, however, since the NFA registry is the mechanism for collecting the tax, and the methods by which taxes are collected can be modified within running afoul of the Byrd Rule.

Just shy of a pound of tannerite vs. a most modestly-sized watermelon. Shot at 100yds with .308

We did that with an old fridge at the trash pit at the ranch.  I was picking crap out of the surrounding trees for hours.  Not my finest hour.

Finally picked this up (long story....had to go twice, because my ID didn't match my federal ID name, because DPS decided to gringo-fy my middle name).

Not sure when I'll manage to get to the range to shoot it.  Been a LONG time since I've had/shot an autoloader (never been a big handgun guy).  My wife sees it last night.  "What are you gonna do with it?"  I looked at her funny -- "umm, shoot it?"  She wanted to make sure I wasn't going to keep it in my car or something (I'm not, not big on carrying....although I have carried from time to time when work situations seemed to require it).  In any case, looking forward to getting it out and putting it through its paces.  Last time I shot one was my uncle's -- it was his service weapon as an ATF agent (he got permission to stick with it when they switched to 9mm).

Nice, I'd swap out the sights for something you can see in low light situations, but other than that nothing more iconic that a clean 1911.

Fascinating period when those came out.  Different worlds were still colliding out west.

Went to presentation some time back by the Cody Firearms Museum covering the guns of the west and it was amazing that they had pictures of cowboys with their 1873s, 1876s, Thompsons and even some Spanish Mausers - in the same picture.

Always laughed at the scene in The Highwaymen with Costner going into the gun store and walking out with an arsenal of Thompsons, BAR's, 1911's, shotguns, etc.

Picking up a Glock 10 mm I bought on sale from PSA today.  Need something for bears in addition to spray as I do a lot of summer hiking in bear country (Montana).  Glocks aren't pretty.  But they sure are functional.  Wanted something bigger than my 9mm and more capacity than my Sig 45.  Bought some 220 grain ammo made for big game to pair with it.
