Lots of silly, fun memes in there, but this offers a good explanation for why it resonates, telling us, "You too can make a difference."

What's funny to me is when Rian Johnson did this with Rey, and tried to make Luka an actual fucking person who can make mistakes and atone of them, the annoying vocal part of the fan base went absolutely nuts.

Rey was supposed to be "Just some girl" who happened to have the force, and Luke was an old man who was beaten down by a very horrible choice he ALMOST made, but in the end didn't.  But it was too late.

This is not to say that movie didn't have it's flaws(Canto Bite sub plut can be shot to the sun) but he WAS doing something similar...no one was ready for it.

Or he wasn't a good enough storyteller to pull it off.

I still hate that the backlash had them course correct back to JJ and gave us the shitastic RoSW...I would have loved to see Rian finish the story, or hell, do the entire trilogy and see his vision play out.

Couldn't have possibly been worse than the final installment.

I don’t know if I can get into cartoons.

I’ve tried both Clone Wars and Rebels but gave up. They just seem cheap, childish, and overly drawn out.

I don’t need a cartoon to salvage Anakin’s character or water down the significance of Obi-Wan and then Luke but introducing a whole shitload of refugee Jedis and critical characters who weren’t included or even referenced in the films. The live action stuff should stand on its own merits.

I think the anthropologist is trying to make a point that's pretty unnecessary and nothing Gilroy was even trying to attempt. I don't think he was trying to subvert anything Lucas had done. He was making Star Wars where you didn't actually have to have one drop of knowledge about the Force or frankly anything else to pick up what was happening and what the stakes were. Yes, that's appealing to a larger, non-SW nerd audience. You didn't need to know Anakin's fall or the Jedi being wiped out. If you've heard Gilroy talk about the time frame he's trying to build his world in, there are only a few people who've ever seen a Jedi. They are very few Force believers. It's very much like the first movie. You can just be dropped into that world and it was fine. He was telling the story of the average people who make revolutions happen under extraordinary circumstances but I disagree about the notion that it wasn't a hero's journey. The Force healer seeing Cassian's future plays up a bit that he's fairly special. Bix felt it to I'd imagine.

Andor is very much a hero's journey because Cassian tried his best to not get involved until he had no choice at the end of season 1. He was only it in for himself and to scrape by. Then he was fully in after Marva died and Bix was hurt because of him. Very similar to Luke just wanting to drop Obi Wan off at Anchorhead and go back to being a farmer. Then the only family Luke had ever known was wiped out and he had nothing else to stay for. That motivated him to want to learn about the Force and go on his hero's journey. And Luke only succeeded because of Han Solo saving his ass multiple times. I think Andor hits so well because it captures a lot of what made the original movie great. But the story is timeless because revolutions and resistance have always happened in our history.

Jesus Christ. This take is worse than all of Helobious’ bad takes put together. Face it, Episode 8 sucked. It’s on par with Episode 1 as the worst Star Wars ever.

The PT and ST all suck shit and none are worth rewatching. In fact, I wish I’d never seen any of them.

The OT is great, Rogue One is good, and Andor is fucking fantastic.

Whats great about Andor is that its about the characters and the story. The star wars universe is only a setting and not the entire show.

Its not about getting the minutia of canon correct down to hair follicle placement. People obsessed with that shit are fucking losers. They know it, we know it, everyone knows it.

Andor is everyman, but he can fly anything that moves.  He was also rescued as a ute in a very, very conveniently miraculous circumstance to grow up under the influence of Maarva.

The force is with him in a lot of ways, even if it's not throwing X wing fighters out of the swamp.

Sir, you should know screws and bricks do not belong in the SW universe. By having those small details in a show like Andor, it takes away the aesthetic appeal of SW and the story being presented. /s

Episode 1 isn't even the worst movie in the prequel trilogy, and Episode 8 isn't even the worst movie in the sequel trilogy, so... don't try to accuse someone else of helobious while doing a helobious of your own. 🤣

Which of 1-3 is worse than 1? Are you kidding me?

and which of 7-9 were worse than 8? At least 9 gave us the Death Star remains. They all sucked, but 1 and 8 are the worst it gets.

2. Episode 2 is the worst. It’s not close.  There is a decent story and some good acting coming from quigon. If they had dialed back the amount of acting the child had to do and just a bit of the jar jar bullshit and that would have been a good movie.

Here's the problem with this take.  The execution sucked SO fucking bad that it didn't matter what the original vision for Episode 8 was.  Good intentions and poor performance....well that's just poor performance.

In other words

SHUT THE FUCK UP DREW

Maybe, but there is very little Jar Jar. Everything Jar Jar related is fucking awful. It does not get any worse than Jar Jar.

Dude. The fucking droid factory scene in Episode 2 is nearly TWENTY MINUTES of crappy CGI slapstick. It adds nothing to the story - Jar Jar at least provides meaningful connective tissue to the story being told in the movie. Jar Jar even puts Sheev into power!

For all the bad filmmaking of the prequel trilogy, they at least actually built a cohesive world and were telling a story. The Clone Wars animated series really does the yeoman's work to contextually enrich the PT

Uhg, The Acolyte fell into the same trap as the sequel triolgy I feel like. They didn't know what story they were trying to tell, and seemingly changed mid-thought several times.

You’ll get no argument from me about how bad the CGI and acting is for Episodes 2 and 3.  It was purely awful. But the “always a bigger fish” scene? That king that shakes his head and spits everywhere when he talks? The utter ridiculousness of a shield that the droids can just walk through? Even the pod racing scene was bad. There is nothing redeemable about that movie other than the Darth Maul scenes. And even then, those stupid shields that would come up for no reason at all that “trapped” Obi Wan and prevented him from helping with DM? Utter and complete garbage.

You should check out the "Light and Magic" docuseries on Disney+, I think it may change your mind about at least EP1. They were really doing some incredibly groundbreaking technical filmmaking in that first film. It wasn't the best story telling, but it sure did expand the universe of Star Wars

And you're right, some of it is just ridiculous - but it's a space opera fantasy adventure about space wizards with laser swords! There's gonna be some silliness like that.

Which is why personally, I don’t subscribe to the SW has to like Andor from now on for me to enjoy it attitude.

The CGI work done in TPM was pretty big for the movie industry. The pod racing scene alone is ridiculous for a film that came out in ‘99. I’m technically a prequel kid, and while there was some bad CGI in those films, there was also really good ones as well that still hold up today.

I remember thinking the technology is only going to get better with CGI and movies will able to do some awesome stuff. Then Marvel did their thing and I’ve yet to see a CGI scene from that franchise better than the 5 second close up of Grievous in ROTS. I don’t watch a ton of marvel stuff so I could be wrong.

Finished Andor last night (yeah, sue me). So damn good. You guys have said it all.

Has Stellan Skarsgaard (best name ever) always played such a perfect heavy? I feel like I've been missing this actor

I went back and read this thread - I did want to touch back on this one - RONIN. IYKYK. Skarsgaard , DeNiro, 3 Bond villains, Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone, Katarina Witt (both in their prime) and one of the two best car chase scenes ever committed to film (French Connection).
