No lie, at one point Phil said “Shout out to good parenting!”

Taking my son to Houston to see them on the 14th. He just turned 16. This will be his first big metal show and it’ll be my first time to see Metallica too. He’s so pumped.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Bobby Rush at The Majestic in Dallas tonight (I live next door to it).

Headed to terrorize the Wicked Butcher patio shortly.  Come yell out "Mule Dick" and say hello.

After that, I'll be the dude in the front row in one of my B.B. King tour shirts (always difficult to find one in my sea of Metal tour shirts).

Bourbon and Blues on a Friday, yall!  Cheers!

Is Wicked Butcher any good? I’m in that area frequently.

It is a nice place to go dine, and they cover all the bases with some nice dining flourishes thrown in.  Obviously, the dining room is fancier, the bar/patio is more casual.

However, it seems like we hang on the patio or in the bar for random cocktails and apps more than we eat in the restaurant.  Wine list, cocktails, brown liquor are all fantastic.  For example, last night was a bottle of Ghost Block Cab with their (insanely good) Hummus and a Charcuterie plate, along with their complementary Popovers.  It was all we needed before the show.

The best Filet in town, however, after exhaustive research...The Woolworth.  Repeatedly.  And their service and bar ain't no slouch either.

If that helps...

It does thanks. I like The Woolworth. The pig face at CBD Provisions is a show stopper too.

Then I definitely need to go there.  Walk by it all the time on the way to, either, The Mitchell or The Scarlet Pumpernickel (or both!), depending on the mood.

Thanks for the rec!

Ok, @Buzzrock, mea culpa.  I was wrong.  The Primus, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle was fucking awesome!

It started off on the wrong foot as it took over an hour to get into the property, park, and then walk a loooonnngg  way to the venue.

We probably missed a good 45+ minutes of music.  But once we got in everything worked out.  As we walked in Primus was starting "My Name is Mud" and then continued on into "Jerry was a race car driver".  Then they played their new collaboration with Puscifer.  This acted as a bridge.  Puscifer continued with no break.  They were great.  I should not have ever doubted a Maynard project.  After 2-3 songs they transitioned into A Perfect Circle.  They continued this throughout the night.  Each band would play a couple of songs and then transition to one of the other bands.

The stage was set up with giant staircases on each side leading about 15'-20' up to a riser that had all three drum kits for the assorted bands.  When they moved on to a different band the musicians that weren't playing just hung out on the staircase or on the side of the stage, chilling, partying, even playing table tennis.  They were having a great time and would just float back onto the stage and perform.

The sound guy was the tits.  It sounded crisp, clear, and loud back in the grassy area where we were (cheap seats).  The bass rocked the whole environment without overpowering the rest of the band.  Good job sound guy!

There were several jams in which all 3 drummers were playing and it was fucking awesome.  Primus' new drummer is really good.  Sounded amazing.

My only complaint, other than the parking clusterfuck, would just be my hate of going to concerts at such large venues.  I hate paying so much for tickets and then essentially watching the video screens because I can't see the band.  I suppose I could shell out a lot more money to sit up front but that runs counter to my credo.  I like good music at small venues where I can tap into the energy of the band and crowd.  Sitting on a hillside is such a downer.

Also, fuck LiveNation.  $28 cocktails.  Go fuck yourself.

Glad you dug it. I went to that show last time it came around and it was a good time.

OMD was in Houston on Monday. I felt like I was watching a John Hughes concert. Fun show.

Last time I saw them they opened up for Depche Mode at the Erwin Center in 88. They still got it.

I've seen a lot of bands there over the years and they're typically very good with a good crowd. I've mostly stopped going while the beer garden has been shut down for remodeling (or whatever they're doing). The experience you described is drastically different from what I've experienced there over the last few years. Hopefully it gets back to normal after they reopen things.

How was the show?  All 4 have either been sick or injured.  Life in a van.

Def a grunge sound, like a young L7, and one hook sounded like straight Nirvana. Crowd was into it and they seemed to enjoy playing. I would’ve loved to see them at a place in Baltimore like Holy Frijoles, (think punk night at blue flamingo) metro gallery or Ottobar, where they’d prob love it, but DC9 was a pretty good venue. DC just lacks that artsy trashy combo that I miss. They were good and I’ll see them when they come through again.

Edit: Btw, that’s a wood floor so there’s some flex.

Edit, Edit: Sound quality blows on my phone.  Leaving it in the rain will do that though.

I was at that show too. I thought the weather was perfect. A nice light breeze occasionally.

I really enjoyed the show. They have a pretty extensive catalog and played all the standards, a few new songs, and a deep cut or two.

The video board was entertaining. The akron ‘88 cable access theme was pretty good tongue-in-cheek humor.

Well worth the drive down from dallas.

The Well seems like an odd band to book for the hipster douche bag crowd that’s usually at Central Machine Works.

What's the story on the Bomb Factory in Dallas?  Is balcony worth the extra cost?

Yes. With a caveat or two. What show?

16 hours ago, GenXer said:

I’ve never spent extra for the balcony. In fact, I’ve never considered it.

Downstairs can be an absolute shit-show for a packed show. Caamp last week would’ve been miserable on the lower level. The crowd downstairs can get “chatty” and will ruin a show if you’re a little further back and not with the die-hands closer to the stage.

It’s also nice to have a chair in between opening act and headliner. (Fuck, I’m getting old.) I’m also 5-10 and seems like the majority of concert-goers are 6-foot and up so you’ve got to bob and weave at times to get a good view if there’s no “grade” to the floor and there’s not at the Bomb Factory.

So I’ll leave it at this — if it’s a show that you absolutely do not want to risk a bad experience, spring for upstairs. If you don’t care if there are a bunch of college frat kids around you talking during the show (depends on the show for sure), then maybe it’s not that big of a deal. The good news is there is not a bad upstairs seat in the place though I’d say front row on the left (opposite the “suites”) are the best upstairs seats.

Just got home from Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, and Die Krupps.

This was great top to bottom. Die Krupps hasn’t played Austin since ‘96 even though Jurgen lives here. They killed it. I would love to see a full set. Nitzer Ebb is always good for just being two dorks on stage. Ministry is only playing Twitch, With Sympathy, and earlier Wax Trax singles on this tour and it absolutely killed. Yeah, Al has to use a vocal track to keep up but the crowd loved it and the reworked versions of the songs were great.

Sadly, Douglas from Nitzer Ebb died today. He has been ill and wasn’t on this tour (it was just Bon and another dude). He had a commanding stage presence and voice, for sure.

Skatenigs with Long Black Car and Razorblade Dolls at Reno's Chop Shop in Deep Ellum tonight.  I'm guessing I won't be the only old fart there.....

How was the show?

I've given up on seeing old punk/industrial bands.  I realized that half the appeal of them was the atmosphere of the show, but now they and the audience (us) are just too damn old.

Instead of moshing and hurling insults at each other we just stand there quietly sipping on our cocktails.

I now only see nostalgic bands that never really had a crazy stage show.

Case in point, I just bought a ticket to see Tears For Fears in September.

for those with hulu...bonnaroo is streaming today through sunday. looks like die spitz will be on tonight.

I heard about that . . . we don't subscribe.  It looks like hulu can dvr and there are converter apps out there so if anyone wants to generate an mp4 video, I'll happily venmo a case of beer.

The "live stream" claim is not a thing.  They play mid-afternoon.

Flipping through the streaming services and found Bonnaroo on Hulu.  Plenty of names I don't know, but Luke Combs, Insane Clown Posse, and the one and only Die Spitz are on the schedule tonight.

Saw Andrea Bocelli on Wednesday at the new Moody Center in Austin.  Wasn't able to make it down to the mosh pit, but it was a pretty good show otherwise.  He sang the several songs I recognized including one from Loony Tunes and one from the Bad News Bears.  You have to be pretty refined to appreciate this type of concert.

Here's my report from 2022.  I probably wouldn't see him again, but I enjoyed the show.  He is a beautiful singer.

My experience, too... I like seeing shows there.  Good food (tacos from the truck are legit albeit overpriced), lots of space and usually good times.  I'm a fan of going there for shows or the occasional wrestling match.  Those are a lot of fun!

kevin mckinney at batch last night. kevin on acoustic and david ramirez on electric. played a mix of soulhat and solo stuff. quite enjoyable. apparently he'll be doing this once a month at batch. they cut him off promptly at 9:30, which was kind of weird because he seemed like he wanted to play longer.

soulhat is playing antone's on the 28th.

Thanks for the reminder. Bonnaroo has a pretty good lineup this year. We are going to The Head & the Heart tonight but will catch some streaming when we get home. Rainbow Kitten Surprise is playing earlier in the evening but looks like it won't air until the "Late Night" at 10:30 or later so that's perfect. Other bands I'd like to catch some of include:

  • Glass Animals (Fri) -- won't because this will air during our in-person show tonight
  • Red Clay Strays (Fri)
  • King Gizzard (Fri)
  • RKS (Fri, 10:30)
  • Modest Mouse (Sat)
  • Mt Joy (Sat)
  • King Gizzard (Sat)
  • Vampire Weekend (Sun, 8:30)

Don't count your chickens.  Bonnaroo has been canceled.  Weather.  I'm glad the girls got to do their set, but at least half the artists won't do the same.

Wow. Was trying to pull up the RKS stream as we left Head and the Heart show and saw the news. That is huge.
