The WNBA had 22 regular-season games last year that averaged more than 1 million viewers — the first time since 2008 that a WNBA game topped 1 million viewers. If you add in the WNBA All-Star Game and the WNBA Draft, that makes 24 WNBA events that topped 1 million viewers during the 2024 calendar year.

Clark was part 21 of those 24 windows, per Sports Media Watch. And last year, six different WNBA television partners set viewership records for their highest WNBA game. All six involved the Fever.

The Indiana/Dallas games will do big numbers.

The W is about to blow up. Very good basketball product - ready-made megastar - ton of super good-looking players across the league.

I tried to fucking tell y'all...

There’s definitely a bump in youth basketball participation since Caitlin hit the scene, so the interest and ratings should build over time.

That said, it still pales in comparison to the numbers in youth volleyball, which is a total racket.

If the wnba ever spreads it's wings and has a full all-star weekend, Reese is gonna be a menace in that Sat night flat-footed rebound contest.

Cheryl Miller had the best idea for all-star weekend for the W and that is a 3 point shootout between Clark and Sabrina.

I know Aja deserves to have her signature shoe but good lord Nike not rolling out a signature shoe last year for Clark was beyond stupid from them.

It usually takes a while for a signature shoe and design. When they roll it out, it will dominate the market.

It shouldnt take over a yr.   Hell Nike had Air Jordans out by the end of MJ's rookie yr 40yrs ago and back then no one knew what they would do.    They KNOW a CC shoe will print money.

So, she is basically Texas during football season in the Big 12 which means she should be leaving for a bigger league in a couple of years.

Europe maybe,  Spain has a decent women's league, pays well comparable to the WNBA, and not a bad place to live.

Not much different than what we see from the better men's and women's soccer players going overseas.

I understand ztejas position about how viewership is going to grow because of all the participation in the youth leagues etc... which will translate into viewers.

When I was in elementary school my Mom signed me up for a youth soccer program and we went to watch Kyle Rote Jr and the Dallas Tornado play at Ownbey Stadium. That gives you a hint how long ago this was and at the time we heard the very same thing.  Soccer will eventually become very popular in the US because of all the youth players who will eventually become viewers etc.....and it did grow a bit.

If you expect Clark to raise the profile of the league similar to what Magic and Bird did for the NBA she and her team need to win titles and force the rest of the league to elevate their games otherwise she is Pete Maravich playing in obscurity in Atlanta and  New Orleans ,

Meh, those leagues arent bigger.   They just pay more generally.  Soccer is a European game.   Basketball is an American sport.  There is a reason the best players from over there still want to come here.    Higher salary but less US endorsement money isnt an upgrade especially when she would have to be away from home for months at a time.   The next CBA will fix a lot of the salary disparity anyway

Its been one yr.  Magic and Bird didnt move the league from tape delay to billion dollar TV contracts in one season.

I have no idea how you expect her and her team to have titles already.   Her team made very big moves this season and I expect them to be right there at thee end of the yr.

Your right, Magic and Bird had no impact on the NBA or their teams in their  first years.

Except,  Boston was +32 in terms on victories in Bird's first season and lost in the second round of the play-offs to the Sixers who went on to play in the  NBA finals.

If I only could remember who the Sixers lost in that final, oh yeah, the Lakers who were +13 in regular season wins and won the title in a game 6 in which Magic literally willed that team to victory with a stat line of 42 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists playing center replacing an injured Kareem.

You are right in that the 1980 final and the 1981 final were not all broadcast live as the overall ratings for the NBA were very low. We did see however, in 1982 all the finals games were live broadcast and interest was starting to grow as the Lakers won their second title in 3 seasons.

They played in the Finals a 3rd time in 1984, lost to the Sixers, and then the next season why saw the start of the run of great Finals games against the Celtics.  If the quality of the product hadn't gotten better the NBA was going to be in very big trouble and that is exactly what Magic and Bird did for the game.

I will say it again, Clark and here team need to win and force the league to raise its level of play to attract new viewers. The WNBA is not a new league, it has been around almost 30 years and the team that dominated the league in those early years no longer exists because people stopped going to the games in Houston. Why?  Quality of play.

whatever success or popularity that the wnba currently possession 100% due to two things: 1)espn cramming the league down our throats for the last 15 years, and 2)caitlin clark, the first ever women’s player with true mass appeal. the league would fold in half a heartbeat if left to its own devices. everyone outside of wnba players and their literally hundreds of fans understands this. aja wilson gets a shoe because of espn, not because amrcia demands an aja wilson signature shoe. as long as the biggest stars of this league continue to have terribly off putting, selfish, narcissistic, entitled attitudes i will continue to root for the demise of the league.

also, and i can’t stress this enough: angel reese wouldn’t get minutes on a good boys HS JV team. none. she has more privilege than HVL, CC, and cameron brink combined. she sucks, so so so bad, both at basketball and as a person.

No idea where you are going with this.  I never said anything like Magic/Bird had no impact early.   I said the league to didnt go from tape delayed finals to multi-billion dollar TV contracts in one yr.

CC had a great season and a great showing in the playoffs.  Her team was not good enough last yr but she has a better team this yr.   Not winning a title in her first yr isnt some kind of negative on her or the league in general.

I’m sure they would share similar sentiments towards you if they were forced to hate read your post on this thread. Wishing demise on this league because these women don’t give you the warm and fuzzies is a weird take especially when you watch and enjoy other leagues with men as stars that are total shit bags. Your post gives incel vibes.

it’s such a regular foul too. there was nothing dirty or excessive about it, in fact i wouldn’t even call it a hard foul. it was literally just the standard play that the situation called for, and then reese goes full on

giphy.gif?cid=9b38fe91wc2gg3gqxkt8xzsso9

out of nowhere, followed by her getting up and acting like she was just assaulted. angel reese absolutely has a very real hatred for CC and it’s as embarrassing as it is one-sided.

To be fair, reduce the measurables on most pros and they'd be working elsewhere. If Jordan was 5'10" he would have played at UNC-Greensboro before his insurance career.

Wait.....the investigation into the Fever fans for racism is because they cheered after Reece missed her free throws?  That's it?

They need to make something else up to justify this investigation, if not, shut this charity down now because the "sport" charade has jumped the shark.

The WNBA is one torn ACL from Clarke from being completely irrelevant again.

From what I have gathered is they played shit sound bite after a miss or something and people are calling it "monkey noises" while she was shooting. Yet no player on the court confirmed there were monkey noise or racist stuff yelled.

If we create a heel, people will watch our games.

Maybe true.  Maybe false.  But the drama creates discussion, for sure.

I like the wrecks in NASCAR too.  I haven't watched a race in over a decade.

They damn sure ain't fighting it either. The foul calls/ way the game is called and tolerating the hateful behavior is damned sure something.

I agree  that it is almost certainly too effective to be deliberate.

It draws attention and the social commentary is compelling.  I ain't watching the games though. Instead of, "Did you see the game last night?" it is "Dem bitches still fighting..."

I understand the increases from abysmally low base numbers.  They are also almost single-handedly driven by one player, but not completely.

NEW YORK, Sept. 27, 2024 – The WNBA delivered its most-watched regular season in 24 years, finished with its highest attendance in 22 years and set records for digital consumption and merchandise sales in 2024.

Highlights from the league’s 28th regular season include:

  • VIEWERSHIP: The WNBA attracted an all-time record of more than 54 million unique viewers across ABC, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, ION and NBA TV. A record 22 regular-season game telecasts averaged at least 1 million viewers.  The season was consumed for a record 136.29 million hours across all national networks.  Additional viewership highlights include the following:
    • This was the most-viewed regular season ever across ESPN platforms with an average of 1.19 million viewers, a 170% increase from last season. The 2024 season featured the top seven most-watched WNBA games ever on ESPN, the two most-watched WNBA games ever on ABC (2.23 million, Seattle Storm at Indiana Fever on Aug. 18; 1.71 million, Indiana at New York Liberty on May 18) and the most-watched WNBA game ever on ESPN2 (2.12 million, Indiana at Connecticut Sun on May 14).
    • CBS Sports delivered its most-watched regular season ever with an average of 1.10 million viewers, up 86% from last year, as well as the most-streamed season ever on Paramount+. CBS had its five most-watched games ever, led by 2.25 million viewers for the Chicago Sky at Indiana on June 16.
    • ION averaged 670,000 viewers – up 133% from last season – and had seven telecasts average at least 1 million viewers.
    • NBA TV more than quadrupled its viewership from 2023 and had its 13 most-watched WNBA games ever, topped by the Las Vegas Aces at Indiana on Sept. 11 (678,000 viewers).
    • In addition to the 22 regular-season games to average at least 1 million viewers, ABC’s presentation of the 2024 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game delivered a record 3.4 million viewers, an increase of +305% versus last season.

  • ATTENDANCE: The WNBA had its highest total attendance in 22 years (2,353,735), up 48% from last season. The league’s 154 sellouts marked a 242% increase from last season (45).  Below are additional attendance highlights:
    • The WNBA averaged 9,807 fans per game, up 48% from last season (6,615 fans).
    • The Indiana vs. Washington Mystics matchup on Sept. 19 at Capital One Arena set a WNBA single-game attendance record of 20,711.  It was one of three games to draw at least 20,000 fans this season, along with 20,366 for Indiana vs. Las Vegas on July 2 and 20,333 for Indiana vs. Washington on June 7.
    • The Fever’s total home attendance of 340,715 fans was a single-season record for a WNBA team, surpassing the previous home attendance record of 250,565 set by New York in 2001 in 16 games.
    • All 12 WNBA teams enjoyed at least double-digit year-over-year growth in attendance this season, led by Indiana (+319%), Los Angeles (+69%) and New York (+64%).
    • The 30 games as part of the Commissioner’s Cup presented by Coinbase averaged 9,377 fans, up 42% from last season.

I saw a CC Fever shirt in Bastrop, Texas today. In case anyone is wondering how big she is.

Yes it was being worn by a butch lesbian but that's not the point.

The league office will be thrilled if the public and media keep talking, arguing, raging over the CC/Reese "rivalry." The more the better, as its the WNBA soap opera that keeps it in the news and drives viewership.
