At this point they have to be running a bit and are laughing at all of us. Imagine a group so blindingly incompetent they make Big12 refs seem decent.

we’ve got epl officials being paid ridiculous amounts by saudis to go officiate matches over there once every blue moon, and back in england the saudi owned teams keep getting blatantly erroneous calls to go in their favor week in and week out. at best jr’s a horrible look and totally unethical, at worst it’s an actual conspiracy. either way, something has got to be done.

In most cases it’s the system and var rather than the refs.  They make the right decision a high percentage of the time regarding offside and for stuff like sendings off and possible handballs they wait for var to tell them what to do.  The whole Arteta thing was ridiculous, his usual whining. no clear and obvious error on the header, it’s already been calculated and shown the ball was in and there was no way to discern offside.  More controversial was Havertz and Bruno not getting sent off, strangely he didn’t comment on that.

there’s comments like “ it doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as it’s the right decision.”  That’s complete bollocks.  It’s terrible when you are in the stadium; very little info is shared and you sit around puzzled for minutes on end.  VAR should be binned, it solves nothing and makes the game less enjoyable with constant stoppages.  Goal line technology, great.  I’d be fine with retrospective punishment for egregious fouls that are missed but remove var.  the Championship does fine without it, things aren’t at a point of no return

2010 Portsmouth. They went Bankrupt (aka Administration). Were docked 9 points.

I would add it does happen to top clubs around Europe. Juve was hit with a 30 point deduction and relegation last year, but it was reduced to 9 points on appeal. Serie A is not shy about hitting teams with penalties as Fiorentina, Lazio, and AC Milan have all docked points in the top flight all this century.

Experts say Chelsea could face points deduction?

sure, sure.  When was the last points reduction for a club in the first tier? (sincere question)

damn.  today.  but not City.  Everton.  this is my shocked face.

this is like Podunk U getting slapped with significant NCAA penalties for recruiting violations while Bama gets a slap on the wrist for its major infractions.

Just doing some light reading - this doesn't seem to absolve Chelsea or Man City of anything. There just hasn't been a ruling on either of them, while Everton has had a ruling. As the EPL continues looking into City and Chelsea, it is possible (and because of this, people are saying likely) that either will get a penalty if they are found to have taken part in wrong doing.

everton lost money over the last three years.  no shit, they have sucked, they are building a new stadium, we had the pandemic, and we don't have a state sponsor or a russian oligarch thug to create fake entities to sponsor us.

ten points is insane.  they have condemned the club to relegation.

Have they?

Everton has been playing well the last few weeks - they were well clear of relegation before this. This dock of points puts them into relegation, but only by 2 points. If they win a single game they are out.

They don't look at all like the teams that are in the relegation race, most of whom are conceding a massive number of goals (everyone beyond 15th place except Everton has a double digit negative GD, while Everton's is only -3).

While this 10 points hurts, I think if they keep up their play, it shouldn't be a death sentence.

That's the real question that has been asked by some (quoted from this Defector article😞

Everton will certainly feel aggrieved by the timing of its punishment, and will likely see itself as a convenient sacrifice being held up by the Premier League in order to get the government off its back. The club will also, as it stated in its response to today's punishment, be keeping a close eye on what shakes out of the ongoing case against Manchester City. If one breach of the financial rules gets you a 10-point deduction, what kind of punishment fits over 100 alleged breaches? What's the league going to do about Chelsea's alleged secret payments?

I mean, what if we saw either or both of those clubs slapped with 30-40 point deductions?

they had a great run between the last two international breaks...but the schedule ratchets up a lot in the next leg.  next 7 matches include united, chelsea, spurs, city, and newcastle.  not going to be a lot of points there.  gonna be stuck in relegation zone for a while.

IIRC there was a risk of Everton going out of business had they been relegated last year.

it was a near certainty.

i'll say this, a ten point penalty for a technical, bullshit violation of just not making enough money for one random three year spell better mean an smu death penalty for chelsea and city.

That stretch also includes Nottingham Forest and Burnley - both very winnable games. Win those and even if the other 5 games are losses, I would venture a guess that Everton will be out of relegation again.
