RIP Golden Richards

Its crazy. For guys like him, the NFL was just a chapter in a life full  of surprises, good and bad. The average player just didn't make that much money. Today, a 7 year  career as a WR probably means $15-20M in salary minus expenses/tax/etc.... It ain't a goldmine, but no reason you cant end up with a few mil in the bank.

He made one of the greatest catches I've ever seen in a loss to Kansas City, that year they didn't make the playoffs with an 8-6 record, I believe. Tipped a high ball up and caught it on the way down. Shame they never show that in the old highlights. I remember after that game I was so upset I broke the shower head. Golden was cool.

An 8-year career pays even better. Jk

RIP. Although a Cowboy fan in my callow youth, for whatever reason I tended to like the black players better.

Robert Newhouse was my favorite for a long time and I later worked with him as a bankruptcy trustee.

Richards was almost too pretty.

I was the same age as Newhouse’s kid.  Competed against him in damn near everything.   He had his dad’s thighs, which made it not so fun to try to tackle him.

Played in SB 10 that season and iirc, Chiefs were without Dawson that game.

A heartbreaking 1995 article by a writer who, as a boy, idolized Richards.  They drove around Salt Lake City during the interview. What started as an innocuous interview, turned into an overdose.

Damn, that was painful to read.

Agree.  That was a painful read.  I have to hand it to the author, Joel Reese, for being transparent about his role in the entire overdose.

My Jr. High Biology teacher was also an Asst. Football Coach. I remember him trying to impress upon us how superior Robert Newhouse was to other running backs. It was simple, his thighs were the size of their waist.

Shit... you don't give prescription pills to someone else. If they need the pills that bad, you get em to a doctor. That's just basic How To Handle Drugs 101. Journalist should've known better than that.

And the "oh he seemed fine to me" and "everyone was doing it" shit from the Cowboys staff is about as honest as a 3-dollar bill. You hear that same insincere bullshit from the porn folks who exploited Traci Lords.

Fuck all those enablers.
