Got to agree with you. 5th round picks are quite valuable, you’ll find them starting all over the league.  My Lions got both Malcolm Rodriguez and starting OG Christian Mahogany in the 6th.

The Boys have made Dak the highest paid QB in the league. So Milton will never ever even see the field in all likelihood.  Poor use of resources by GM Jones

This is the correct answer.  Also, a 5th might be the difference when needing to make a trade up or down in the draft.  Jerry is the worst GM in the history of all professional sports.

He's bad but not even the worst owner/gm in DFW.

Disagree comepletely....they had three 5th rounders, and they gave up one of their two very late comp picks, and got a better QB prospect than anyone else they'd get on day 3 and picked up a 7th for them to throw at some priority FA.

I know the default is to hate everything the cowboys do, and other than the coaching staff, i've been very unimpressed with the offseason so far, but THIS was an actual GOOD move.  I really don't get ya'll even debating this.

A 3rd or 4th(which they don't have) or even their early 5th, maybe...but not for a comp pick.

No, its not the default to hate everything the Cowboys do.  I would love for them to sign a legit free agent to help them in areas of need.  They don't do that.  They already traded away a 4th round pick for Trey Lance and then paid him $5.7 million to be the third string QB.  I would much rather take a chance on a decent QB falling to the 5th round.  Yes, they had three picks in the 5th round.  5th round picks contribute quite a bit in the NFL these days.  My point is that they may need that pick when the draft comes around if they decide to move up or down in the draft. Just because its a compensation pick doesn't make the pick less valuable.

I just don't think the Patriots trade a qb for that low a price if they think he can have starting potential, regardless of how much they believe in their young starter because they have Dobbs as a backup. I think he's likely a tools guy that has a limited ceiling as probably a backup, but lacks the vision and processor speed to be much more.

If you have a qb you believe has a high ceiling for a mil a year, you keep him. Things happen in the NFL. You don't fuck around at qb if you really think you have a jewel in the rough. The Patriots marketed the shit out of him and got something for what they think was not much of a loss.

They're just gutting too much of their middle round draft and ammo to move up when they keep getting sniped a pick or two ahead of their target guy.

Correct. I am a reasonable fan with no expectations or much hope for a big jump above mediocrity. I'm neither a hater or a polyanna cheerleader. I like a lot of what  they did in free agency plugging holes so they don't have to reach for drafting guys at certain positions, and  probably upgraded in some areas, definitely got some decent quality depth. I just don't like them getting too cute with the underrated areas of the draft that will hurt their chances of being able to react when a player they really covet falls down later than they thought, or the quality market at a position is really drying up ahead of them.

If they draft another injury case or some kind of problem child with their second rounder again, or reach a round or two ahead for a player at a need position again when they didn't get their target guy, I'll start getting more depressed.

Yall act like Dallas was gonna use that 5th to draft someone of need.    We basically got Milton for a no name d tackle from the Savannah bananas that Dallas would Hve drafted in the 5th. And when Dak pulls his hamstring in week 2 Milton will come in a lead us to 6 wins like a boss

The Cowboys apparently put a much higher value on 7th round picks than 4th and 5th round picks.

The more I read about Milton's pre-draft evaluations the more pissed off I get.

You'd much rather waste a 5th on a QB in a MUCH worse QB draft than on a guy who's graded higher, and has actually played in the NFL even if was week 18?

You are getting WAY too caught up in a very late 5th round. And ignoring they got the first pick in the 7th back. They basically moved down 34 spots AND god a backup QB with amazing traits.

There literally is NO reason to hate this trade. At all.

There was not a QB outside the top 3 rounds that was going to be any better than Milton, and in most cases, probably not as highly graded.

They gave up on of the last 2 comp picks to get it...not there own 5th, AND they got the first pick in the 7th to boot.

Using 1 of 3 comp picks is NOT going to hurt them in the fucking draft.  Jesus Christ.

Also this.  At least Milton has been thought highly of, has amazing traits, and has actually played downs in the NFL, regardless of compeition.

I'm fine with the trade, but what are these assumably newly discovered amazing traits considering he was a 2024 6th round pick?  The trade is fine, but the backup QB position is way overthought by fans.  This guy or a 5th round QB pick in this draft has a 95% chance of sucking.  Experience even a little > rookie so yeah good move.  But it doesn't make them a % point better of a team.  Cooper Rush was considered one of the best backups in the league and it meant jack shit for this team.

Milton has thrown 29 passes in his short NFL career of one game played, all against backups.

That doesn't qualify as a backup qb. It's like a preseason game. If that's the Cowboys' backup, that's a shitty situation. Maybe they're will be signing another veteran, then it makes at least a modicum of sense. Because right now Will Grier isn't looking like a great option to back up, either.

Either the Cowboys have another plan, or this move was stupid as fuck. They won't be drafting a qb, because they already have a long range prospect on the roster they gave up a pick to get. They're not likely to go into the season with 29 total passes between their second and third string qbs backing up a qb coming off a major injury and has missed a bunch of games in the last three seasons.

You do realize that last years QB class was way more highly rated than this one?  Milton would most likely be a Top 5 QB this class if you're reading the tea leaves.

He has amazing traits, and massive canon of an arm, and absolutely no touch. That's what they're hoping to prove.

Once again, it's a like one of the last 5th round picks, and you're upset over it.

Also agree it's stupid to go into the season, with a QB coming off injury, and has been hurt 2 of the last 2 years, with a very inexperienced guy behind him...not if you're seriously trying to compete.

Milton wasn't even active until week 18. He wasn't the backup in New England, wasn't getting backup practice reps. He got showcased in the last game that was meaningless.

It is absurd to think he's ready to be any NFL team's primary backup at this stage. He won't be, unless the Cowboys are just even more idiotic than even the haters believe they are. He is the new long term prospect so they won't have to spend another draft pick on a qb in this draft.

They still need a backup, whether they settle on Grier, who at least knows the offense and has been around long enough to have some experience. I believe they still sign a cheap backup at some point before or after the draft, like Drew Lock or maybe get Tannehill out of retirement if he's cheap enough.

About Milton, while I'm as circumspect as anyone about his ability to master the nuances of the game, especially mentally, to be a starter or maybe even high end backup in the league, the Cowboys didn't overpay.  Apparently some other teams were in the mix and interested and the Pats got a slightly better offer (I don't know about that)...

https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1907809290015973677

The major issues continue to be problematic.  First, the team has zero depth, at almost any position save maybe OG.  And as usual, Dallas has done almost nothing in UFA.  They basically signed a solid LB and then a bunch of camp bodies.  So they desperately need a talent infusion and the front office has turned their 4th and 5th rounder into Mingo, working himself out of the league and Milton, champion of the underwear Olympics but still a ton to learn.  Additionally, the front office continues to leak like a polish submarine.  The rumor had swirling around for a week..... they just don't know how to do anything without tipping off the press. At least Milton is known as a hard worker and very good teammate.

Who's everyone wanting at 12?  If you don't know the player, what position?

As much as I am not crazy about drafting RBs in the first round, I wouldn't be sad if Jeanty lasted to 12 and the Cowboys took him. He seems like the closest thing to a safe pick that settles that crucial position for the next five years. Checks all the boxes. But he'll probably be gone.

I'm not crazy about the WRs that will be available, and I'm not sure they should burn a first rounder. Second round would probably offer the best value, maybe third. Golden is flashy but I don't think he's the kind of WR that would be the best match to pair up with Ceedee. McMillan would be a better fit, but I'm a bit skeptical about his value at 12. But I wouldn't hate it that much. I think there is likely good value at 2 and 3 wiithut a ton of dropoff.

I would love to see a permanent DE replacement there, but I'm not really seeing the draft stack up for that particular guy at 12.

I don't like guards at 1, either, or a "versatile" shorter armed guy they say can play tackle or guard, which usually means he is an NFL starting guard or a marginal tackle. It just piles up too much onto the cap when you can get good guards later in the draft. Get a true guard in the 3rd round. At 12 you gotta get true left tackle, not a development guy like Guyton, that can fix that spot would be pretty awesome, but I see that as unlikely from the Cowboys perspective. There isn't an interior DL that I love at 12, and they tend to go later if they aren't just a total no-brainer stud player.

I don't want to see a big reach for position of need over a better prospect.

I don't think they need to panic and take a corner too early, it's just going to add to the drama in the coming years. And I don't want to see a TE in the first three rounds.

I'd be OK with a small trade down, inside of 16-ish depending on how things are falling, to get another 4th rounder if none of the "guys" are there at 12. Another 4 or better could be extremely useful to fill some more of those needs, since they have pissed away so much mid draft capital. I like Mykel Williams a bit later than the Cowboys are picking if they went that route.

With no 4 it's going to be hard to get solid picks at all the immediate needs that have a chance to start or rotate, solid guards, safeties, linebackers that might have been available there, or even a good RB with early starting potential.

Other than Jeanty, there's not a particular player prospect that has me really drooling that might possibly be there.

Is this a joke? Dude has earned more than $30 million and just signed with the Chargers for $6.5 million. Caring about one’s career is maximizing your value and that goes for any of us. Why would he go earn $55k in the UFL so he can start?

if he played in the UFL for a couple years and actually became capable of starting in the NFL he could suck and still get 20/year.

Why give up fleecing NFL teams for big $$? Get paid big $$ and get the best football coaching in the world. Why take vastly less $$ to go to Canada and fail there when he can fail here and show juuuuuuust enough to get another big NFL contract?

I expect Dallas to trade out of that spot. My first instinct is that they’ll trade back to try to recoup some of the mid draft spots they traded for Mingo (how fucking stupid was that fucking trade?), but I wouldn’t be shocked if Jerry made a big move to pick up a player that the media has top ranked that has fallen some on draft day.

Part of me wishes he’d draft Shedeur and burn the franchise to the foundation.

he doesn’t have a “big” NFL contract and he’ll never get one again, unless he becomes a starter.  starting for a couple years in the UFL would be one way to do that.  my original point was also “if he cared about his career” which implies sticking around for another 10 years or more and trying to actually play the game.  he won’t make shit from the chargers, and that’s just if he makes the team.

The best paid QB in the CFL gets $600K/season (2024 season)

https://3downnation.com/2024/05/07/the-cfls-15-highest-paid-quarterbacks-for-the-2024-season/

Lance has a $6MM contract, and he’s a backup.

Lance’s contract isn’t “big” relative to the best paid NFL QBs, but it dwarfs the contract of the best CFL QBs.

Making all the $$ he can right now is the correct thing to do. That way he’ll have some pennies left over when he finally does move to UFL or CFL.

I'm team trade back, even if Jeanty is there...heck that would make it easier to fall back.

Pick up a 3rd if it's a small drop, a 2nd if it's into the 20's.  Take your WR there...can still go DB/DL/RB with the other top 100 picks easily enough.

I'll take whatever WR is left at 20+.  It'll be Burden or maybe even Embuke.  Hell I'm okay with Golden too.

I have a feeling if Jeanty is there at 11, he's a Niner. Seems like their kind of pick. So I see the possibility of the Cowboys getting him as minimal, and I wouldn't be a trade up guy. Small trade down a few spots, maybe, if they are guaranteed of getting at last one of their top targets remaining with the few picks in between.
