So if I’m reading right we accept the strike out and interference gets called game over by rule

There's another rule, 12.17.3, governing retired "runners," presumably including retired batters, in which interference puts out the lead runner.

When I worked for Texas Softball we'd regularly practice intentionally walking a batter.

Catcher would signal it and it was a 50 mph soft toss way off the plate.

The arrogance or ignorance of what Tech did tonight with our best hitter up was wild.

you know it's gotta be ignorance, right? i mean this is tceh we're talking about

and that fuckup is the most tceh thing ever

that shit right there is why tceh will never amount to anything in any sport

So, I didn't remember that the catcher must set up behind the plate.  Seems I have vivid memories of catchers standing to one side of the plate or the other catching a walk pitch.  But it appears that they had to stand up and step over there.

So, a Canady issue or a Valdez issue or maybe a little of both?

No - with batter interference, batter is out, runner returns to base.  The rules discussion on air was a total mess.  No one in softball knows the rules of their own sport, even the umpires.  Just a total clusterfuck.

https://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4683-2024-and-2025-softball-rules-book.aspx

11.20.2 The batter shall not hinder the catcher or any other fielder from catching or throwing the ball by stepping out of the batter’s box, or intentionally hinder a player (for example, on a steal/pickoff throw or a play at home plate) while standing within the batter’s box.

EFFECT—Delayed dead ball is signaled. The defensive team shall choose either the result of the play or the batter is out and each base runner must return to the last base that, in the umpire’s judgment, was legally touched at the time of the interference. Exceptions: (1) If a base runner is advancing to home plate and there are fewer than two outs, the base runner, instead of the batter, is out. (2) If the catcher is not making a play on a base runner but the batter or umpire interferes with the catcher’s return throw to the pitcher and the base runner, consequently, advances safely, the umpire should suspend play and return each base runner to the base occupied at the time of the accidental interference.

good catch.  the only thing they could say is that because Kavan caught the ball it was a throw back to the pitcher.  Atwood was obviously trying to "make a play on the base runner".

that whole play should have ended the game and the reason is logically Tech who is causing interference should not benefit because the umpire hindered Atwood.

Pretty sure German thought the 3-2 pitch was inside, so she was heading to 1B. We caught a big break on that liberal strike call, which then set off the cascade of weirdness. But after the bogus reversal of Goode's tag, I'm not feeling a bit guilty about that K.

both I think.  they had clearly not practiced that at all.  In baseball the catcher would cheat and move before the pitcher released the ball but nobody complained because everyone does it.

That strikeout pitch was thrown 4 times in that AB, thrice for a strike. But I understand her confusion bc the pitch before was a ball to the same spot

this.  It was clearly batter interference.  But the runner would have just returned to 1st, which she did any way because of the ump interference.  So a stupid challenge IMO.

They were saying that the runner would be called out, which doesn't make sense, but softball has some distinct rules from baseball apparently.

Hilarious the main account posted this

I was at the game. Surprised that Singleton wasn't ejected. He was yelling at the home plate umpires strikezone the entire night. He also had words with all the umpires after the game.

Canady imo. Catcher just has to stand there behind play with arm out and then slide out to catch. No need to be pitching as fast as she did down the pipe but high.

Setting the umps up for tighter zones on Canady next game I think

So it wouldn't have matter then, right? The batter was already out and the runner returned to the base already.

The obstruction rule needs an addendum that if you’re out by a fucking mile, you were never obstructed from reaching the base

it's already in the rulebook, plain as day, as an addendum.

Not surprised.  It sure seemed redundant.

There is an addendum that, when the runner was out before or notwithstanding any obstruction. in the judgment of the umpire, the obstruction is not called.

I noticed that the replay we kept looking at didn't really show how dead out she was, like the view from the third baseline.  So, I'm guessing the replay official didn't see it and didn't exercise that judgment.

Pitch to Atwood earlier in the game that was called strike was below the knees low. Call it a wash.

I wish we had taxed Canady more, she only threw 88 pitches. Hopefully we take more pitches and get more base runners to drive up the pitch count tomorrow

Up thread, I cited a rule dealing with retired players, which presumably includes out batters (as opposed to not out batters), in which obstruction/interference by a retired player results in the lead runner being called out.

I think in the end though, the ump interference happened first and resulted in a dead ball, so the rest of it didn't matter.

To me it almost seemed like Canady didn’t agree with the decision to intentionally walk her so she was phoning it in. The 2nd pitch in particular was 100% a strike. I don’t think the ump knew what to do. Probably a good thing he didn’t call it a strike because that might have woken Canady up a little bit.

This is exactly right. Worst ball/strike call all night was the second pitch to Reese. But who was gonna complain?

Sorry if this has already been covered but do y’all think the Tech SS was completely unprepared on the single? It doesn't seem like she got a good break on the ball. I think she had a shot at it in a normal situation.

The umpire judgement is a problem though

this is the issue but in a different respect.  in one of the posts upthread about the rule it says something about it not being obstruction for impeding the runner if in judgement of the umpire  the fielder is just making a  play or somesuch.

they aren't using the judgement.  they are just letting replay review obstruction and replay just says "where is her foot in relation to the base before she catches the ball?".

replay should ask the umpire if in their judgement in game action did the fielder impede the runner from getting to the base.  if the ump says yes then they should have called obstruction at the time of the play.

But this team has won games in weird ways all year long

Name the only player in a college World Series history to get their first hit on an intentional walk!

Yep. Tennessee has a much better offense than Tech and they were not prepared for Mac to pitch half that game.

Definitely. Looked like she was just standing. Glad the ball wasn’t hit right at her.
