Name the only player in a college World Series history to get their first hit on an intentional walk!

Now can that get her going? She was 0-10 before that hit.

But to the point, when Henry gets on base, good things usually happen for Texas. A lot of pressure to pitch perfect with the 3/4 batters behind her

That’s not the rule. Batter interference calls the runner out. Umpire interference just sends the runner back.

I just don’t see how you can call both, because the steal attempt doesn’t actually occur if umpire interference is first. But that’s just my logic, not me reading a rule book.

So if the runner gets thrown out at second you think she gets to go back to first because the ump interfered?

so now we have to start a "softball trivia" thread?

When I worked for Texas Softball we'd regularly practice intentionally walking a batter.

Catcher would signal it and it was a 50 mph soft toss way off the plate.

The arrogance or ignorance of what Tech did tonight with our best hitter up was wild.

The first time she did it, I thought she’d correct herself and over compensate. Then she kept doing it, lol.

Btw, COYS!

Why the hell did Najay NOT throw the ball to walk to the outside of the plate? That just doesn't make sense.... I'm glad she didn't and we hit it, but that was a bizarre strategy if your intent was to walk her.

In the post game press conference, this was the first hit she’s ever given up on a 3-0 count, and her first intentional walk this year…but, she took responsibility for the mistake.

I'm trying to decide if they'll pitch to Reese with RISP tomorrow. Mainly because I'm still trying to decide if they pitched to her with RISP tonight.

Tech has very little HR power other than Canady, and she's controllable with good pitches. If Mac starts and keeps the ball down in the zone, Tech won't earn much on the scoreboard. Then again, they didn't have to earn what they got tonight. Tighten up the middle IF defense and I love our chances.

I don't know anything about her but every news blip I see with NiJaree(sp?) Candlestick(sp?) makes me like her.
Or at least, I've not found a reason to dislike her.
Other than the whole red uniform thing.

I can understand why she was recruited by Stanford.

So, I didn't remember that the catcher must set up behind the plate.  Seems I have vivid memories of catchers standing to one side of the plate or the other catching a walk pitch.  But it appears that they had to stand up and step over there.

So, a Canady issue or a Valdez issue or maybe a little of both?

yeah, they would stand behind the plate an hold their arm out to give the pitcher a target that they would then step to.

I don’t dislike her. She can be a little too much in the circle with her emotions, but so can Pickens and Bahl

She’s very close to a Cat-like career - never having the offense to back up her pitching.

FFS, she leads her own team in HRs

I don't know how the rule is adjudicated in that scenario, but I am assuming not. The out was made, so interference doesn't matter. But that's not what happened, so the sequence of events and how to apply the rule is probably different.

In football, a coach either gets to tack on a penalty to a catch even if there's DPI, or gets to decline a penalty, so maybe it's something similar to the latter (you can decline it/not call it). While I watch Texas softball, I'm not intimately familiar with the rule book like I am college baseball.

What I've learned tonight is that @bschoolprof should probably be a college softball umpire - and a pretty damn good one, at that haha. Maybe he'll weigh in on this one too.

other than the over the top "Nijaree Stomp" thing she seems like a good egg.  but she chose to play for tech so there you go.

I saw James Street do that in little league……really….cool then…..even cooler now!

Calling for an intentional  walk in little league during the 1960s should have resulted in that coach getting his ass kicked by the dads of both teams.

FWIW, the ump barely grazed the catcher's arm. It's likely that the catcher moved a little to her left because of the batter's obstruction. It certainly simplified the end result.

No second base for you! (The Base Nazi)

A thought that I haven't seen mentioned. On that 3-0 pitch, not only is Reese swinging at a pitch she can easily hit, but I have to imagine the fielders are not 100% in their normal ready mode to field. I don't think it mattered in this case, because I don't think they are ever getting that ball, but I do think it makes swinging on the 3-0 pitch just that much more of a "home run" move.

I watched back for this specifically and everyone is surprised and gets a late start. Runners were surprised.

I wish we had taxed Canady more, she only threw 88 pitches. Hopefully we take more pitches and get more base runners to drive up the pitch count tomorrow

They’re cooked

mentally they are done.

throw up 1 run in the top of the first and it’ll turn in to a run rule

What a crazy ass game.

Getting out of that first inning no runs was wild.

Knew Bennetts fielding would hurt us eventually.  Hard hit ball and she was playing in but still needed to be made.

The obstruction call is stupid if she still has a sliding lane to the outside of the bag and thrown out by a mile.  Thought we should have walked the lead off hitter anyways.

Canday was so scared to throw a wild pitch and wasn't usedto the intentional walk its was primed up for that.    Also no fielder was ready for someone to swing during an intentional walk.

Tomorrow just throw TK again, only two hard hit balls off her

Sorry if this has already been covered but do y’all think the Tech SS was completely unprepared on the single? It doesn't seem like she got a good break on the ball. I think she had a shot at it in a normal situation.

It's a valid point.  She looked flat-footed, and probably a little out of her normal position too.

She got caught farting around.

I *hope* we play a little more small ball. You know Canady’s mental fatigue is probably pretty high, force her to make plays. Same with the catcher and 3rd base.

Talking about Maloney, Henry, Scott, KB and even Goode can lay down a bunt single

the are saying that umpire interference means it is a dead ball but IMO the batter interfered before the umpire interference.  Logically the rule is BS because Tech should not benefit because the umpire screwed up.  they are treating it the same as if a batted ball hits ump where the batter is awarded first and ball is dead.  the issue is that in almost every case a batted ball hitting and ump is a base hit anyway.

Something that is underrated right now. Mike's call to have the runner steal second during the intentional walk. It would've been easy to just leave her at first...Reese is being walked anyway, what's the difference? But the fact that she stole second during the intentional walk means that she was able to score on Reese's "fuck your intentional walk" swing.

No shit. Hadn’t thought of that.

Atwood “Kelly Leaked” Tceh.

She was definitely caught flat footed because of the attempted walk. I think she’d have had a really good shot at making that play but for the “walk.”

This.  Should have done that more in game 1.  We are not gonna simply gonna go up there and belt a bunch of extra base hits on her.

hope you are right but Canady is a machine.  she screwed up something they obviously never practiced. my guess is she'll be ready to go and it won't phase her.  doesn't mean we won't win 2-0 or something like that.

I totally agree. You gotta force defenses to make plays. Team speed kills

Agreed.  Add Henry’s huge at bat to that.  Multiple foul balls down the line fighting off pitches with two strikes, only to finally battle and straightened it out enough to get on base.  Then her speed takes over

This SA sports show I listen to in the AM said he wants to root for a team with a girl that looks like an old school softball player and a listener told him to look up Morgan to which he immediately said this what what I’m looking for I’m pulling for Texas!
