FVV option must be picked up to trade him. At 44m, I don't think the Suns will find anyone willing to trade for Fred during the season, so they would be stuck with him for 1 year.  Booker, Beal and Fred is not a championship team, so the other assets they get back would need to be considerable.

However, compare that to Rudy's contract, or Vassell, both have significantly more future money guaranteed. Neither is going to be a trade asset that returns more picks. FVV is at least a one and done option for them.

The other thing about this trade is that you may need to give KD a 2 year $122m extension as part of the trade. If that's the case, that would be problematic for the team's cap situation, unless hes willing to take a moderate discount. Maybe he agrees to 2 years 90m? I know it's not 73 win Golden State, so he may not be willing to drop 30% in value, but he's 36, and the extension is for his 37/38 years. That's a huge liability given his injury history.

If that extension is part of the trade, do you still do it?

I found the answer about FVV after I made the last post (can't trade a player with a player/team option until it is exercised). KD turns 37 in September, so the extension will really be for his 38/39 seasons. I wouldn't give him $60+ per year for that. Either treat it as a one year rental (and pay accordingly in the trade) or get him to extend for a more reasonable salary based on age/injury risk. For salary matching purposes, Houston's 2025 base salaries are:

  • Sengun - $33.9
  • Jalen - $33.3
  • Brooks - $22.1
  • Jabari - $12.4
  • Reed - $9.6
  • Landale - $8
  • Eason - $5.7

They could re-sign and trade FVV (don't know why FVV would agree to that). If they decline FVV and don't re-sign/extend him, it puts them under the cap where they could sign another free agent and/or re-sign Steven Adams, then pull a trade for KD or someone else.

I've seen realistic sports writers put a fair value on KD based on his age, injury risk, and only one year left on his contract, but there are more who think Houston should give way too much. ESPN mocked 5 trade proposals yesterday and had Houston giving up #10, the 2027 PHX pick, Reed, Cam, Brooks, and Londale. The other offers they pitched seem like less capital than what they have Houston giving up. Minnesota offers Gobert plus spares, Spurs offer Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, and #14 pick, and Knicks offer OG Anunoby, Mitchell Robinson.

I don't think I'd give up Reed + multiple good assets; maybe tell them to pick two from Cam and the two first rounders plus salary filler. Can FVV be traded prior to declining the team option to serve as filler...like include him, then PHX declines the option, then FVV is a free agent (and could re-sign with Houston)? Or Jalen + Brooks?

i've noticed a lot of that as well.  i want the rockets to trade for KD and think it would significantly raise their ceiling for the next couple of years.  however, i am not interested in handing over anything that is above fair market value in return for him.  if the suns (and KD) are more interested in what another team offers, that's that.  the Rockets are not in a position where they have to make a move to try and win big over the next couple of years.  they can simply run it back and try again next summer if necessary.

Any potential trade between the Suns and Rockets for Kevin Durant would likely include Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr., per @Gambo987 (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bur…).

Durant’s preference appears to be landing in Texas with either Houston or the Spurs.

Green and Eason would be much better, but could be leverage for more picks.

Just great all of the Rockets rumors for KD involve a king's ransom and all of the Spurs rumors are for a bucket of chicken

Losing Smith would suck, but if you do resign Durant, he doesn't have a spot as Durant would be playing the PF, and you would likely lose him to FA. I would do that deal if we don't have to give back any picks.

I wonder how Ishbia's meddling will factor into this. After overpaying for KD and that horrendous Beal trade, he hilariously sent out a memo apologizing for not being involved enough.

I bet he wants to overcompensate for turning his roster situation into a laughingstock. He's going to be that idiot in your fantasy league proposing ridiculous trades.

KD sucks - didn't do shit in BKN or PHX. Empty calories jump shooter at this point in his career. OKC and Indiana footprint of building depth and athleticism is the right way.

I would love to take someone with his shooting ability and give him Green’s minutes. Unfortunately, I think you mostly have to hide him on defense at the 4, maybe he plays 3 in a big lineup and you sacrifice a lot of defense for offense.  I think that’s a bad fit unless you’re making other trades.

Aside from Amen, the current Rockets look a little like a team of mismatched parts welded together.  They each have deficiencies that can be covered up by other guys on the floor, but it also means that plugging someone new in has more fit challenges than on, say the Lakers.

I think Miami is going to overpay for Durant and stun everybody. Riley and Spoelstra treat that Heat culture bullshit like a cult. They’re desperate to be right.

best move we could make this offseason ...

Just In: Houston Rockets center Steven Adams has agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension to stay with the franchise, sources tell ESPN. After playing a key rotation and leadership role in the Rockets' playoff run, the new deal keeps a top center out of free agency.

I'm ok with less defense for more offense on this team. This team's half court offense was ass. I would prefer to see Reed and Whitmore get more minutes (earned), Thompson get a better shot, Jalen become consistent from 3fg and midrange, Smith get a better handle, Eason stay healthy., etc.

That's a lot of improvement that isn't all going to come in one offseason with 20-23 year old players, so I'm ok with Durant for 2 years... That is when this current squad should be championship contenders.

That is, unless a Durant trade means too many players get shipped out. I'd rather he go elsewhere and the Rockets keep the PHX picks.

Good to keep Adams

Agreed, that’s also a very moveable contract.

True, and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to test this prediction, but if we do get Durant be prepared for him to speak out about how shitty our offensive sets are and that he has to do all of the work.

I find myself wondering if the sets are bad because the shooters aren't great, but I think Smith, Green, and Brooks should have had better looks with better ball movement and thus better numbers.

Keeping Adams is huge, obviously. Good for him. He seems genuinely happy in Houston.

He would start on the following playoff teams:

Lakers

Knicks

GSW

Grizzlies

Celtics (I assume they’re dropping Horrford ASAP)

Heat

Magic

The more I think about it, the less I want to trade the PHX picks.

I'd rather contract an (additional) shooting coach and an offensive assistant and send the team on a bad ass shooting vacation, and run it back. Go get Craig Hodges to pair with Ben Sullivan. Send them to Costa Rica for a month. Hire a motion offense assistant coach and send his ass, too.

I want to see if this team can get buckets or not.

Tell Cam you want him to be great... Within the structure. If he doesn't buy in, bench his ass again and assign a sports psyche to figure him the fuck out. I think he can be great. Not ready to trade him. And since the psyche is on contract, assign them some Jalen and Alp homework... Unlock Jalen as a competitor. He seems to have a block at any adversity. Settle Alp down... He wants to do everything all at once, which isn't bad, but he can only get great at one thing at a time. Pick I W new thing for this offseason and master that thing. Don't try to come up with a floater in the playoffs, do it now.

Yes, all of that can happen with KD, but I like the idea of having trade or draft assets. Keep stacking.

Man those picks are gold; I’m good with dealing the one this year because the last goddam thing we need on this roster is a rookie.

If Giannis is really out of play and if the asking price for KD is really what the intergoogle says it is, I’m good with starting the season in by and large run it back mode. If we sign FVV to a revised deal that gives us enough flexibility to get a veteran shooter off the bench with the MLE. Maybe we can package Landale and Holiday’s no-guarantee deals with #10 and Whitmore to get another non-starting shooter.

Lets see what Milwaukee thinks about the Freak when they’re 20-32 at the trade deadline…

the Adams re-signing is fantastic and also takes away the need to draft a center with the #10 pick if we keep it.

jalen green + dillon brooks + #10 pick for KD is an easy move to make if phoenix will take it.  i'd put that on the table and tell me to let me know by draft day.  I'd probably let them choose between the #10 this year or their 2027 first if that made a difference, but they only get one pick and i'd do everythign i could to ensure it wasn't the 2029 pick.

The Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant's preferred trade destinations out of Phoenix, sources tell ESPN. Those across the NBA have been made aware in recent days that those are the three teams that Durant would commit to long-term.

very damn cool ...

The Rockets traded for Steven Adams when his future was uncertain following knee surgery

Then gave him all the time he needed to work his way back to health and form

Discovered that Adams-Alpi is the best double big lineup itl despite modern conventions

Leaned on Adams as their 6th man in the Playoffs and showed him what his role will be when it matters most

This was all in stark contrast to Memphis who traded him without discussion post-surgery

Adams felt gratitude and loyalty to Houston and resigned prior to free agency on a team friendly deal
