We have that already. If you take a WR, which I doubt we do, then it needs to be a Coleman or Marsh type

You're right, we do have those things - but we don't have anyone who can do those things that's 6'5". I believe he was also kind of new to FB out of HS and I kind of question the level of coaching he's been getting. But you're probably right - I'm guessing he'd be prohibitively expensive even if we were interested

edit: and I agree. If we go after anyone, it should be Coleman

Realistically this is what we need on offense. Will be Arch’s last year - load up and fuck the cost.

On Defense I’d take:
DE
LB
S
CB

Again - “we pay to win the game.”

Meh. Great athlete but not a great receiver

He should've been an Edge rusher that's the position where he had the highest ceiling. Maybe he didn't want to bulk up and mess up his track speed though.

There is a large chasm between the Cam Coleman/Ryan Williams supertalents/super expensives and the lower profile guys who will fit into the culture while providing a trait/skill that the team needs at WR or any other position really. We gotta go find more of those and pick our spots on the super talents we go after.

Can't rely on developing these unproven guys. Let them prove themselves while you work to raise the floor of the team.

The problem isn't the top 1 or 2 wr recruits every year who are studs the minute they step foot on campus.  Its 3-10.  That's where you still tie up a lot of money, but they need time to develop or are straight up busts.

Is Deandre Moore leaving after this year?

I like Livingston and Mosley. Wingo is just a good athlete that’s about it. I doubt sark ever benches him

I think if we go in the portal for a WR the young kids are leaving. Of course we don’t know if they are any good since sark refused to play them.

I’d be ok sticking with Goosby and Baker at tackle (assuming both return). Funds are finite and they were both playing pretty well by year end.

I think we’re ok at Edge, absent a situational player like Spence being available. I liked what I saw from Phillips, Littleton and Black at corner, although depth would be nice.

G-C-G is an absolute must, to state the obvious. Safety, RB and WR (assuming the freshman leave or aren’t ready) as well.

We aren't getting 4 O-linemen in the portal. That's absurd.

In terms of OL, the first question is do the coaches think Cruz and Kibble will be ready to contribute next year.

The second question is, since these coaches were dumb enough to think Stroh was a D1 player, is there any chance they are going to get any of this right.

The other question is should Flood's judgement as to OL still be trusted. He is same guy that trotted Stroh out for multiple games to start season

Why is he guaranteed that? He's not good.

Because experience is invaluable? Particularly if the player has said experience at multiple spots along the line? Idk, call me skeptical if you think we'll have 2 portal/in house Gs that are better, and Cruz sets the world on fire with no injuries.

That's cool, his experience doesn't mean shit if he isn't good. You can go get someone with similar or more experience from the portal that is a better player. Your reasoning right now is exactly how the fuck we ended up with our situation this year.

Paul Wadlington is always good for an annual take-down of preseason all American teams that boil down to “this dude has started 30 games” rather than on actual performance.

I have to imagine they will be looking to upgrade the line and aren’t going to worry about Conner Robertson’s feelings if they can find someone experienced and better.  I think they’ll stay put at tackle because those dudes are expensive and they’ve already paid Baker a lot and Goosby will likely get a raise (though that family is clearly not mercenaries so it’ll probably be modest).

I guess my point is that getting 3 portal IOL, better than what's currently on roster, is going to be almost impossible. Almost. And if you've already got experience within the system, why not see how things shake out before leaving? This isn't the same as "why wouldn't we keep Stroh?" The OL, while still a problem, was much better with Robertson in it than out.

Hard to get much worse than we trotted out there this year with Stroh, Hutson, and Robertson.

We will likely take 1-2 OL players.  Goosby and Baker are back with extensive experience and will have an entire offseason to add weight.  Nick Brooks is going to lock up one of the guard spots.  He’s too big and talented to sit on the bench.  Another offseason will help him too.  We need to see if Cruz and Kibble are ready.  If so great, but that is where I look in the portal for an experienced center or guard.  We don’t need Kelvin Banks.  We just need “better than Stroh”.  Then we also will have Cojoe back and let’s see if Chatman and the Coleman brothers come on.  I probably would also take an experienced tackle that is fine riding the bench incase Goosby or Baker get hurt.

As far as WR.  Moore is either declaring for the draft only to go undrafted and straight to the practice squad.  Or him and Wingo can go play at Missouri, Tenn, UCLA.  Those two are getting paid and not producing.  Georgia got Noah Thomas, Branch.  Aggy got Craver, Conception.   There are plenty of very good WRs with experience that would come here to compete.  If I’m Sark, I keep Mosley and Livingstone if they aren’t costing much and upgrade the WR1 and WR2 spots.  The freshman can leave if they want.  Who is going to pay them what they are getting here?  None of them outside of McClutcheon warrants top dollar or has proven they can play at this level.  They may down the line, but you don’t waste dollars to sit on the bench.

We absolutely NEED a stud RB.  It may be the biggest need on this team.  We don’t have a single back that can do the things Sark requires.  Wisner is a good but he’s not a RB1 consistently.  Baxter is a shell of his former self.  The young guys didn’t instill confidence with their play.  If there is one position I throw money at, it’s RB.

I think the defense has a ton of young talent.  I don’t think we need as many guys on defense.  A safety and CB.  Maybe a LB and DT for depth.   Simmons, January, Watson, Zina. Spence, Lefau, Smith, Littleton, Phillips, Black is a great starting point.  Add a few guys for depth and let the young 5 stars compete for depth.  I feel much better about the defense than offense as far as holes in the roster.

Bell cow RB is a must. Running game was pure ass this season. Mizzou and Michigan hit the jackpot with portal RBs last offseason.

OL needs complete overhaul - will require $3M for 4 starters. Everyone but Will Baker will need to be replaced. Goosby prob late-1st early 2nd rounder. Robertson needs to go back to being a backup.

DB room needs a lockdown corner to replace Manny. Kobe Black is inconsistent and Warren Roberson is ass.

WR will be tough given the above priorities.

K is Shipley getting another year?

I doubt Goosby goes pro.  Bobby and Gerry have said that the family understands development is needed and they’re not looking to play one year and go late in the draft like Cam Williams.

Same, also the potential money for being a safe first rounder versus round 2-3 justify the delay if a kid is getting good counsel.

Agree with the posters above that we need spend whatever it takes for a top RB and then see what is leftover for other priorities.

If Wisner was either bigger or faster, he would be a really damn good back.  But he's not, so he doesn't have the top end speed to take advantage of his agility and vision or the size to get more yards on inside runs and in short yardage situations.

Largely agree with this, except I think safety is a major need. First order of business is convincing Jelani to take the Barron and Taaffe route and come back. Derek Williams was super jaggy this year, and I would be surprised if Jonah is ready with his attention/practice divided.

Lacy from Ole Miss should be a top priority with no expense spared. Unless Lane brings him to LSU then that would open up a potential Harlem Barry or Caden Durham.

I think between Jonah (assuming he goes through spring practice), Hicks, JJR, Filsame, and D. Williams… there is plenty of talent.  If McDonald comes back, even better.  Definitely think 1 experienced safety in the portal would be good but I don’t think it’s a must.  Personally, if I’m Jelani, I would go pro.  He’s got great measurables, had a very good year on film and safety is not a position of value in the nfl so staying doesn’t exactly improve his draft stock much.  I think he can easily go rounds 2-4 with how well he will test at the combine.

Wisner

Baxter - Can't rely on him
Coooper - True freshmen

You think that entire room comes back? I'd be perfectly fine with just Wisner and Simon.

It's crazy that Baxter played in 10 games this year and I can't recall one meaningful play. I'm not sure he ran for a first down the entire year, or had a run longer than six yards. Or broke a tackle.

Keeping Goosby in school is gonna be critical. Outside of that, iOL is the biggest need. Wisner is solid but another RB would be good. I also think a solid veteran LB and S would be huge, even if not superstars.

Feeling better about CB with the emergence of Phillips alongside Littleton but a veteran take wouldn't hurt.

@victory88 is pretty spot on.

The OT take should be for a backup. Behind Baker and Goosby there isn’t a lot of experience.

We have three holes in the interior. Large ones.

If you can get 3 interior and a backup tackle, you do it. Next year is critical IMO.

The other interesting side of portal season is who becomes a "cap casualty"? Some guys might be good players but not worth their NIL. I don't know who makes what but based on recruiting rankings etc, you could imagine some guys not being worth their money compared to what's available in the portal.

Based on recruiting rankings, I assume guys like Baxter and D Williams are highly paid backups. And some starters may even be in that camp.

Jonah is playing baseball. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what he ends up focusing on after next year.

Hicks, Filsaime, and maybe JJR are the guys i could see us counting on for next year. D. Williams has lost a step following his injury, maybe he's still recovering, but he wasn't great out there this year. Even if we look to move a nickel/corner back there, we still need to bring in a proven guy at both safety and corner.

McDonald coming back would be amazing, and he would benefit from another year unless he gets a day 2 grade like you said.

Black finally showed some promise in the a&m game playing more press man. Kade and Littleton are also quality, but a fourth guy here would be nice. Not sold on Roberson at all.

Assuming Wilson is a bust at this point, so unless we rely on more true freshmen, we need at least two guys at DB in the portal.

When is the portal opening?

I guess Sark doesn't have to worry about juggling portal with playoff prep this year. Put everything in to the portal and final HS class

No sark was just a jacksss last year with portal. Ryan Day recruited the fuck out of the portal during playoff prep.
