Correct. He maximized leverage at a time when we were vulnerable. We caved but that's also why Texas is pursuing Hollywood. They are basically saying, "if we are going to overpay you based on one game, we are going to go all out to get a proven RB with that same money and if we get him, you can leave." Smart move from Texas.

I think "who cares?" is actually kind of an interesting question. On one hand, you're 100% right in that Hollywood Smothers most likely makes the 2026 Texas Longhorns better than Christian Clark does. That's great.

I think what's causing a lot of consternation for fans though (not just here, but social media, Reddit, etc) is that a key difference between the NFL and CFB is evaporating before our eyes. I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan, but pro sports is just about rooting for laundry. Recruiting and player development over a defined 5-year window in CFB offered fans a narrative that doesn't exist in the NFL. There was some joy in having your program identify a Christian Clark, recruiting him, developing him, and eventually seeing him on the field.

There was also joy in seeing players who wanted to play for Texas because we were their dream since middle school. Not saying that we should keep Clark based on one game or that Smothers will not be an improvement. I guess I just miss old school college football.

Kyle Flood should kiss you on the mouth

Unlike many here, I haven’t forgotten my fair share of shitty OL play at Texas the last 20+ years. Under Flood, we’ve had a Lombardi trophy winner, with 4 OL drafted and another top 15 pick on the roster. Sorry if I don’t want to fire the guy that has been responsible for it. Unless you have a guy that is a forsure upgrade, Flood can stay as long as I’m concerned. That doesn’t excuse him for not having a guard ready for this last season but he was also replacing 4 of 5 starters. I’d rather keep the guy proven success here than hire someone that hasn’t proven as much. There was a time people wanted Stacy Searels fired from Texas…. Only to end up with the guy from Oklahoma state, then Tulsa, then UH and to top it off with Herb Hand. No thank you, I’d prefer to keep Flood unless the UGA OL coach or the Michigan OL coach want to come to Texas.

Appreciate the feedback. In regards to people questioning Aggie OL portal acquisitions, Aggies have added the #6, #38, & #42 offensive linemen from the portal (247 Sports Portal Rankings). Now I don’t know what that means in terms of quality, but I have my doubts that this equates to conclusive mediocrity. What we all know for certain is, as of this moment, UT’s had more out than in at the position. We also know historically the current staff have preferred to attack the position out of high school and not the portal. And finally, we know that this approach did not produce results last season, even w/ the later season improvements along the line

I just don’t trust portal rankings. I don’t think 9.95’rs really know at all. But with that said, people last year were making fun of Aggie WR transfers and they turned out very good. Elko possibly knows what he’s doing wrt the portal.

These players/agents that think loyalty from a team will get them above market value, while displaying no loyalty of their own to the team, are learning the hard way. Texas doesn’t underpay from what I can tell. So trying to gaslight that Texas doesn’t value you and you will go somewhere that does only works if you get your price elsewhere. Has that happened yet to any of these guys? When does the learning happen?

Y'all are ridiculous. Blaming the players for wanting to negotiate in an era where the system has changed and no coach or program shows any loyalty to anyone anymore either. Where we just saw a coach leave his team right before the playoffs started for them.

The UGA OL coach is Stacy Searels, soooooooo.

Also, might as well just go back to the Mackovic era and whoever the hell was coaching UT's OL then. Tim Nunez and Mac McWhorter can fuck right off with the other guys you named.

Clark is an interesting case. He knows he is not RB1 and we need another RB even with him, but because of his injurhe needs tape to make any more money. I could see a plan as I will ask for whatever, see if Texas pays or gets close or gets shutout for better in the portal. If it doesn't happen at Texas then I am OK going for a lower deal to be a starter and then move back up.

I don't want him to leave but in reality it may be best for him.

Yeah, as much as I hate to see at lot of these guys leave, it's clear that the market is rewarding experienced starters over potential at this point. Going to a smaller school to generate some tape is probably a better bet than staying as a backup at Texas/OSU/etc.(even if the $ was the same). New world...

Kinda crazy that Terry's name hasn't come up at all (yet!) in this craziness. I'm not trying to wish it into existence, but a high 4-star that didn't play and doesn't really have a position? Surprised he's not on Kentucky's roster already.

There's not any skinny 6'4" running backs around in cfb.

Dude needs to be moved back to receiver today and developed. If not he'll be gone in a year.

I get it, but the ground is shifting beneath everyone's feet here - fans, recruitniks, coaches, players, admins, writers, etc. You want it to be one way, but it is now the other.

In the end, what we're really cheering for (Texas) and against (all enemies in other uniforms) is the name on the front of the jersey. I'm not close to cutting my allegiance in that regard, so I will do my due diligence in the offseason to understand my team and the landscape, same as it ever was, and then I will be watching and cheering happily for another season when it gets here. We're still a mostly captive audience.

You speak for yourself when you say you'd take Smothers over Baugh. I wouldn't. Texas is going to need a Mr. Inside in some regard, and I doubt that's Terry. Cooper doesn't see himself in that light, either. But, if Texas lands Smothers, great, he's really good, and the other guys will have to embrace their roles.

People offering concern about Clark leaving or apprehension with guys like Barnes and the like, their points are fine. Texas has already shown that they'd rather keep those guys than not. However, they're not going into 2026 relying on those guys to live up to long term expectations as starters. Texas, for all of the pissing and moaning on this thread, is pushing every chip in for this upcoming season. We can disagree with how they're going about it, but they're doing it irrespective of what handwringing dipshits here might think.

They've had multiple guys on campus that have not been named. All announcing players does is drive up prices. They've landed their top target at CB and arguably the best one in the portal. We may not love the ST takes, but Texas signed their top target at all 3 positions. Texas didn't land the first guys they tried to get into the portal at RB, but they landed one of the best options that opted in and they're on the verge of landing another. They landed their top target at in-line TE. Top target at NT. They're fully aware that they need 2-3 more OLs. They've made an aggressive offer to the best overall non-QB in the portal in Cam Coleman. They're after big names at LB and S still.

They are looking at their roster and actively upgrading for the following season. They're then going to work on retention with some guys who don't want to leave, but won't be ready for major roles in 2026. I remain a skeptic, but I will not be surprised if Texas comes out of the cycle smelling like a rose and upgraded across the board.

IMHO, the summary so far for Texas is they've done a pretty darn good job in the portal outside of OL so far. solid double off the wall. if they land Coleman and 2 more good OL it will be a HR. If they land Coleman and Smothers and 2 good to very good OL it will be a grand slam.

There’s been a narrative around here for a decade plus that Texas high schools are not producing the best offensive linemen, and that the position gets better results recruited from elsewhere. I know people debate that point, but Texas sure struggled at the position between 2007 and 2023 which would seem to add fuel to such speculation. Perhaps that’s the problem w/ the Stroh data point

I know who the UGA coach is… that was my whole point. People complained about Searels only for him to go on to have continued success. Our OL looked like hot garbage half the season and also looked good against some good fronts in Ohio State, ou, aggy, and Michigan. I’d rather them upgrade position personnel before just burning it to the ground.

We know you're cool with it, hell probably enjoy it, seeing your wife get drilled by different dudes every week. But that shit isn't normal. Most people feel disrespected in this scenario.

Terry is a weird deal. Super talented dude who didn't have a position during his recruitment and a year later still doesn't have one. If we don't think he's a WR then imo we shouldn't be investing money and time in him at RB, because he ain't that.

Can Vasek or Zina contribute next year or do we absolutely need a portal DE to replace Burke?

Bullshit. He was offered 400k, a raise from this last season. He was still going to get play a lot and get to catch balls, he just wasnt going to be our featured receiver. Instead of taking the raise and working harder to earn a feature role for the next season, he bailed, talked shit on the way out, and went to our biggest rival. Fuck him totally and completely.

I get the idea that oustide of Wingo, this staff didn't mind losing anybody at the skill positions. Unless they could get them back at a low price where no resources had to be committed. Rightfully so.

I feel the same way. The only guys I feel that have elite traits are Wingo (straight line speed), and Lockett (ability to win 1 on 1 jump balls). I think both Townsend and Winston also are guys with skills they excel at whether it being physical and a complete athletic freak in Townsend or sticky hands on Winston. The rest of the TEs, WRs, and RBs can be replaced. There is nothing special about their skill sets that cannot be replaced via the portal.

Incorrect.

But if a rostered player asks for x and Texas thinks it can sign a better player for x, why shouldn’t it do that instead and improve the team? It’s more that the market is…not well defined at present and leading to more change than should probably be happening.

Just now, Hermanator said:

Because it’s a business and they’re not bitch-made like you? You’re literally arguing they should market their abilities and get paid while also saying they should be emotional and cry because of their fee fees. It’s not going to be both things you fucking gash.

Well, according to Gerry, ou was his dream school growing up who never even offered him in HS. Did he not feel disrespected by ou? He left bc he got what, 800k, from ou? His decisions were one of a mercenary where it was about the money.

"Making fun of" is dbeasy putting an unexamined spin on the Aggie WR class versus the entirety of the Aggie 2025 transfer class, which was far more roundly mocked by us and the results of the season bear that out for anyone actually reviewing. But, yeah we were down on Concepcion as part of that. I was vocal about it, He'd had a poor season in 2024 at NCSU after being a freshman sensation in 2023. There were no known injuries. He just got worse. He averaged less than 10 ypc. So, it was weird seeing the aggies crow about it. No one had a strong opinion about Craver except that he was mostly a really fast guy with a lot to prove.

Elko has been hit or miss in the portal, just like in recruiting. There is no evidence to point to him being some sort of elite evaluator.

Last year, ATM landed:

Concepcion - great pickup

Craver - great pickup

Amari Niblack - obvious waste of money even before they signed him

Micah Hudson - known headcase and burgeoning bust

Jonah Wilson - big bag of nothing

Tyler Onyedim - highly regarded DT who did nothing against any team with a pulse

Jordan Shaw - a spare DB they had to play

TJ Searcy - show team hero who can play like a beast against shitty teams and then disappears against better opponents, all shit he did at UF as well

Georgia DT named M'Pemba - did nothing at UGA and is doing nothing at ATM

Jacob Zeno - lol

Nate Boerkircher - solid TE pickup

Auburn hyphen named TE - did nothing

Dayon Hayes - non-entity

Julian Humphrey - character issue bust at UGA, became a disappointment at ATM after they hyped him in the offseason.

One cycle, 14 transfers in, 3 solid pickups, a couple of other guys that played, albeit either poorly, sparingly, or both, and a lot of bread. 3/14 is barely batting above the Mendoza line.

He comes from Lucas love joy , a very affluent area. My office is a few miles from there so I have tons of patients that live there. Most homes are 7 figures. He’s not hurting for money. I’d argue he was a fan favorite as much as we ragged on him with the McJaggerson jokes. As far as I could tell, all of us were rooting for his success here. His long term financial outlook and income potential would have been sky high given the opportunities that would have opened for him as a Texas alum. Instead he took 400k and burned all his bridges with this fanbase by going to our biggest rival. Quite a stupid fucking choice. He can enjoy the work opportunities as a sales rep at big red auto after he graduates and gets cut from a training camp as an UDFA.
