Are we sure DV won’t pitch at all today?

47 pitches on Thursday. I'd be surprised given the circumstances.

This feels like a Burns and Dre game.

I wonder what would happen if we'd cutdown hitting batters & issuing walks by say 50%?  What is it, like 87 hbps this season?  Talk about putting yourselves in a bad position.

Walks are not an issue and haven't been really all year. 3.75 allowed per 9 innings is good. You want to be under 4. Last year we were at 4.37.

Or maybe we should lean into it and hit more batters, and hit them hard enough to knock them out of the game?

Just kidding.

Sort of.

When you get to the postseason it is kitchen sink baseball. Pretty obvious at this point you line Luke up to pitch game 2 of both the regional and super regional. At that point I’m 99.9% certain this staff is going to Dylan Volantis as early as possible in any must win situation.

I don’t think it matters who the 4 seed is at this point, you have to try and get through that game with Saunier and Bing.

Zane Morehouse had about as average and pedestrian of a career as you could have at Texas. 5.53 ERA, .270 OBA, yet he looked like prime Mariano Rivera in that 2023 postseason. Postseason baseball is about unexpected people stepping up

I would also like to see them start Cody Howard in the SEC tournament. He is the last “usable” arm with promise that hasn’t pitched quite enough or had that moment to give you real confidence

If yesterday was a regional game they 100% go back to Volantis in the 8th. You are right that it is kitchen sink baseball. The middle relievers and midweek guys you use to pad your stats go away. You have your top 2-3 starters, top 2-3 relievers and run them into the ground.

It goes back to the momentum comment I made earlier. We could use Volantis today to win a 8-7 game and we feel like we have “momentum” but is that giving us the best chance long term? Same thing if we lose 8-7 today with Hudson Hamilton throwing the final pitch and Volantis and Grubbs in the dugout. Is that something that would ever happen in a regional game?

Brand new season starts in 12 days. Nothing carries over.

Not sure how we can make any definitive statements about Riojas after an outing where I believe 5 of the 7 hits he gave up didn’t leave the infield. It wasn’t anything like his previous two outings.

We've seen Grubbs start this year and it wasn’t pretty. My hunch is he is just as much a one time through the order guy as Riojas.

We really need to hope we get a pushover 4 seed so we can get through that first game with secondary arms and line Harrison up to pitch the 1-0 game.

I agree with your takes on Riojas. Yesterday seemed like a fundamentals day. Throw strikes and let your defense support you (except it didn’t).

I’m not a baseball expert or anything but it seemed like one of the things that really helped Roger extend past one time through the order and be a quality starter (and something he has over Grubbs for those wanting to have that discussion) was all the funky stuff like dropping his arm slot and the eephus pitch. I don’t remember seeing much of that yesterday but I would imagine he brings it back in the postseason

You ain’t lying.  David Maroul couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.  Then, he became the incarnation of Barry Bonds at the plate and Scott Rolen in the field.

I like getting a chance to see what we have in Cole, albeit in a small sample

He came so close on the foul line drive last night

.143 average with a .400 OBP is about as unique of a line as you’ll see.

Him and Borba have similar missions this summer. Take your selective eye and just swing the bat a tad more.

Ladies up 14-3 in the fourth over Michigan … at least 3 HRs this inning, 6 for the game. Was 5-3 when the inning started.

Just complete annihilation.

Another good example of how a rough end to the regular season sometimes don’t mean a damn thing

Can any of them pinch hit for Gasparino, Borba, or Flores?

Anybody every hear what Gasparino did to get benched for multiple games?  His defense in the OF is still valuable even if he can't hit worth a shit.

Why no Jonah?

I just don’t think he is as trustworthy as Farmer defensively.

And he is 2 for his last 12. Small sample size but Farmer and Rodriguez are swinging the bat better. Probably also want to see if Chamberlain could be a trustworthy bench bat in the postseason.

Focus and the adversity and distractions that disrupt it (and the opportunities and circumstances that enhance it) are so invisible to the spectator, yet it’s the difference between winning and losing in pretty much every sport.

Fair. I fully expect Willy gas back in the outfield when it matters. His fielding is worth the horrid offensive output.

100%. Focus and mental discipline are the key. In the 90s, the Florida women’s tennis program was destroyer of worlds..   Spurrier required the football team to go to the women’s tennis matches and support them and observe so they could, as the old ball coach put it, “learn what metal focus and toughness is all about You don’t have it yet, they do…”

OK, what's the deal here?  SECN+ shows Galvan up, 14 pitches in, no outs, no baserunners, no balls or strikes.  Fucking amateur hour.

Oh look:  two outs magically appeared and the pitch count dropped to 10.
