I forgot the stats, but I believe Arch was quiet good vs the blitz last year. DC is going to want to hit any QB, but if Arch makes them pay for bring an extra player a DC's options are quite limited.

I’m not talking about blitzes.

Go ahead and show the receipts on this hot take. Show me one, any, RB selected early in the draft that played zero downs in a season, killed at combine and was drafted in the first 2 rounds. Any, ever.

Maybe there is one, but I sure as shit don't remember them.

I was really generalizing the nfl draft when it comes to being drafted. NFL gms love combine studs. They drafted a qb with 4 career starts and more interceptions than touchdowns at 4 overall. If you are 230 lbs and run a 4.2 they’ll draft you whether you played small ball or big ball. I’m not saying Baxter does that just nfl gms are crazy

VY and Manning are substantially different guys. Hell, probably any other human being breaks his ankle against KSU. VY walked it off.

Yes, which is why you don’t give them any extra opportunities.

You keep moving the goal posts all around.

Here is what I'll offer as a wager.

CJ has under 1000 yards rushing he doesn't go to the NFL draft. $100 bet

If CJ goes to the draft with under 1000 yard he is not selected in the first 2 rounds. Another $100 bet

You said this backwards, but I was curious how true it was. I don’t know what you are considering “rare”, but it certainly happens. From what I could tell, just in the last decade:

2021: Stetson Bennett - winner (he played the previous season but pretty comparable experience to Arch, a few starts, 1,179 yards and 8 passing tds

2021: Bryce Young - runner up

2020: Mac Jones - winner (borderline, he made 4 starts after Tua went down the previous year)

2018: Trevor Lawrence - winner

2017: Jake Fromm - runner up

2016: Jalen Hurts - runner up

2015: Jake Coker - winner

So in light of the Sayin news, I recall Trevor Lawrence won the title as a true freshman.  Who else on this list was a true or redshirt freshman?

Playing extremely conservative for the soul purpose of protecting your QB from injury is NOT a formula for a championship. Hell, Ewers was hurt and Sark had designed run plays for him.

It's clear you want a conservative QB game plan if full protection mode.

Maybe you should start a Sarks should sit thread cause he doesn't appear to agree with your strategy. Arch ran nearly exclusively running plays the entire second half of the year.

Manning is a bigger and stronger guy, that’s for sure.

We’ll see how often Sarkisian runs him on the options and how that works out.

In college it is below average, especially for a blue blood RB. NFL is another story

So the problem is that you don't know what average means. You're saying now that when you say we were average at a position you mean average for the top 8 programs in the country? What use is that description?

JFC, not running the goddamned option isn’t “extremely conservative.” The offense needs to take advantage of his mobility. It’s a weapon. You don’t need to run the option, ever, to do that.

The first year starter thing is a little overblown

People conflate freshman and first year which are two very different things. But isn't the premise of the question kind of dumb? I'm more interested if Arch is going to be a good QB next year. There are tons of reasons why a team doesn't play for a national championship.

The only reason the season didn't go off the rails last year was the defense. They won the aggy and Arkansas games almost by themselves, and would have won the SEC CG if Guilbeau just gets in the way of the Georgia TE.

The offense played decent Aggy outside of 2nd half redzone. I forgot how much we dominated that game until I caught most of it on a SEC network rewatch a couple of weeks back.  We turned the ball over on back to back possessions inside the 10YL in 3rd quarter (including the pick 6).

Good thing Arch will be a RS Sophomore!

Sort of the basis for my question.  Being a first-year starter after a couple years in a college system and some decent live game reps is one thing.  But a true/redshirt freshman without that history is another.  As it pertains to Sayin and how good he might play against the Horns (and the rest of the season), I was wondering if Trevor Lawrence was an outlier and the rest of those guys were in their respective programs longer.

I think we will see it once or twice against Ohio State.

One time against Florida.

Once or twice between OU and Vanderbilt.

Once or twice against Georgia.

I'm not including some possible RZ packages in this mix.

Then we see the formation 2-4 times per game otherwise that ends up being something else entirely.

4-7 called run plays this season before Championship Game/CFP.

So, basically I think we agree if I'm reading your message correctly.

A designed Arch run or option will happen a few times each game just to show that we will to keep the opposing D honest.  Then there will be the broken play/keeper.  I have no doubt that he won't have trouble forgetting to slide or get out of bounds when he needs to do so.  It's a strength.  We're going to employ it as necessary.

I'm fine with that.  I just don't want to see him run like Sam Ehlinger.  Sam was definitely tough, but he was also lucky to avoid any significant injury with all of the running he did.

The threat of his running ability will help just by keeping defenses more honest. His ability to get some yards and slide will keep chains moving. He could run a really long time if protection breaks down and against man coverage. Designed runs are one thing. Plays designed where he might draw hits just to pitch… I’d pass on that.

Going for the goal line like he did against A&M, fair enough. Trying to hero ball it, not so much.

Am I the only person who is both confused and unentertained by this Baby Billy handle? And yes, I watched the show. That changes nothing about whatever the fuck is happening here.

Also, spoilered is a Florida update. Lagway is hurt worse than they're saying and has stopped working out again. Two of the main WRs they're counting on still aren't practicing. Dallas Wilson may be hurt a lot worse than the way they're playing things.

Florida held its second and final intrasquad scrimmage of its 2025 fall training camp on Saturday, ahead of the Gators' 2025 season kicking off at home against Long Island University on Aug. 30.

RELATED: Swamp247's intel from Florida's first fall scrimmage (VIP thread)

UF head coach Billy Napier foreshadowed the importance of the past week of Florida's fall camp, and thus the team's second scrimmage, while meeting with reporters on Monday, with camp scheduled to conclude on Aug. 20.

"This is a critical week, you know, it's a really, really important week at training camp," said Napier. "We have to do our best work this week, and, you know, it's one thing to practice like you want to win, it's another thing to practice like you want to win a championship, right? So the level of detail this week has got to ramp up, the quality of the execution has to improve.

"But in general, you know, I think that this group is taking the right approach. I've been very pleased."

Swamp247's Graham Hall and Zach Goodall collected intel on the scrimmage from multiple sources, which we've rounded up into a notebook below.

    Graham Hall's intel

    – For precautionary reasons, DJ Lagway didn't take part at all today, not even in 7v7. Was told it's not due to a re-aggravation or anything but just to get a better look at the three QBs behind him. With that said, I have heard from a source that Lagway still has progress to make in his recovery from a calf strain.

    – As a result, Aidan Warner and Tramell Jones received increased reps today, with Bailey taking his first reps after the two had taken the field. Warner continues to indicate he is the projected second-string QB as of right now. "He's really improved, confident, almost night and day from last season," a source told me.

    – I was told the defense once again was the more impressive unit as a result of Lagway and several players being out of the scrimmage. Freshman EDGE Jayden Woods had both a pick and a forced fumble. Everything I've heard regarding Woods points to him playing from the jump in Gainesville.

    – After the Gators only had one INT in the first scrimmage, the second featured more takeaways, with a newcomer once again making an impressive play. Micheal Caraway Jr. had a pick-six today that was the entire length of the field. He intercepted it in the end zone and ran the entire length of the field during 11v11.

    – All signs point to the Gators coming out of the second scrimmage without any significant injuries, which may be the most important takeaway of all.

    Zach Goodall's intel

    – I gathered the following participation report:

Quarterback DJ Lagway; wide receivers Eugene Wilson III, Dallas Wilson and Kahleil Jackson; defensive tackle Caleb Banks and defensive back Aaron Gates did not participate. Linebacker Grayson Howard played through the seven-on-seven period but was not active in 11-on-11. Cornerback Dijon Johnson, who has nursed a lower-body injury throughout fall camp, was a full participant. It's worth noting my source said Eugene Wilson has looked healthy running behind the scenes and his lack of participation could be out of an abundance of caution.

    – The staff gave younger, depth players more reps this week than last, given the team's battles for rotational and backup roles with the season quickly approaching.

    – Three younger players who stood out over their increased workload: Redshirt freshman tight end Amir Jackson, freshman defensive lineman Joseph Mbatchou and freshman linebacker Myles Johnson.

    – The linebackers and the running backs were the standout position groups from today's scrimmage. In addition to Johnson, Myles Graham, Aaron Chiles and Jaden Robinson were productive with their reps at linebacker. Graham had a would-be sack and broke up a pass in the endzone, and Johnson recorded a tackle for loss and a couple of run stops, in particular.

Jadan Baugh and Ja'Kobi Jackson's utilization was limited as a result of younger players seeing an increased workload; redshirt freshman KD Daniels and freshmen Byron Louis and Duke Clark got more reps at running back. Daniels had a lengthy run, but those players were considered impressive for consistently churning out positive gains of 5-6 yards and catching passes. To pair, Florida's offensive line performed well at run blocking.

    – Freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. earned a series with first-team offense, with the coaching staff being "intentional about giving him experience," my source said. Jones was said to have looked improved in the second scrimmage compared to the first and appears more comfortable operating within the offense. Source called him a "natural thrower."

    – Of the experienced backup quarterbacks, Aidan Warner appeared to separate himself from Harrison Bailey in the battle for the second quarterback role today, my source said, although Jones remains involved in that battle.

    – Safeties Jordan Castell and Bryce Thornton, and cornerback Devin Moore, did not play much. Cornerback Cormani McClain did, however, and made a couple of highlight plays, including a would-be sack and a pass breakup. Hybrid cornerback/safety Micheal Caraway Jr. had a pick-six, as Graham referenced. Freshman edge Jayden Woods had an interception, too, hauling in a poorly thrown short pass near the sideline and making a play to stay in bounds.

    – Freshmen cornerbacks Ben Hanks III and J'Vari Flowers are in the battle for the fourth cornerback role behind Moore, McClain and Johnson. Quarterbacks were forced to scramble a couple of times while Hanks and Flowers were in coverage as they eliminated several reads.

Napier will be owed approx 20 million if he's fired after the 2025 season (contract states he gets 85% of remaining money if he's terminated without cause)
