Grew up a huge Astros fan in San Antonio, and have always lived in SA and Austin… so I’m not terribly familiar with the Houston sports personalities.

Recently stumbled onto the Stone Cold Stros channel on YouTube, with Charlie Pallilo, Brandon Strange, and Josh Jordan.  Is the feeling among Houstonians that these guys know what they’re talking about?  More than the Locked On Astros guys, I’m guessing?

(Acknowledging that nothing beats Breathing Orange Fire, of course…)

Pallilo was always fun to listen to when I still listened to AM radio. He didn’t suffer fools easily, whether they were callers, guests, or just athletes/celebs in stories of the day.

That said, he pretty much could never admit when he was just wrong, and he loved having the last word on a caller who disagreed with him by cutting them off, hanging up on them and talking down to them when they couldn’t respond.

He was famously dismissive of Altuve as a major league prospect while he was putting up big numbers in the minors. People would call in and ask about him being called up and Pallilo would say he wished they would call him up so he could flop and people would stop asking about him. I assume he did a mea culpa at some point, but I never heard it.

His catch in Philly will always be remembered.

Astros go down 2-3 in that series if it wasn't for Chaz and Mancini. They saved Ryan Pressly's ass.

I don't get Stros info as much as I used to but got a couple notes

  • Everyone expects JV to come back on a 1 +1 deal (or straight one year with a wink and nod). He pitched well in the 2H, and honestly worth it for the innings
  • Stros and Pirates have talked Mitch Keller for Christian Walker swap. Honestly, this makes too much sense IMO, Keller is definitely someone I could see the Astros sprinkling some fairy dust on
  • Zac Gallen is the main "Upper tier" arm target but kicked the tires on King, Cease and still kicking them with Suarez but that is unlikely
  • Christian Vazquez is an option at backup C if Caratini signs elsewhere

The radio guys the other day were talking about Paredes being traded instead of Walker because we could actually get something for Paredes. But they said it was because the lineup just can't fit all of these guys and it just doesn't work. I'm curious if they even watched any of the games last season and if they are aware we had 28 guys hit the IR. Assuming everyone is healthy at the same time (lulz) Isaac, Correa, Yordan, and 'Tuve can all rotate at the DH to make it work.... and they'll have to do this for like 5 minutes until someone inevitably gets injured again.

They need to see how Paredes comes back from his injury I think and not count on anything until they do.  It was not your average hamstring injury from what I have read.

Keller is owed ~$55M/3yrs, but projects to be worth quite a bit more than that.  Walker is owed $40M/2yrs and would only probably get ~$25M/2yrs if he were a free agent.  Houston would have to add quite a bit to that trade to make it work.  But it looks like Houston might be about to acquire Mike Burrows for Jacob Melton and Anderson Brito so not sure how that will change their plans.  Verlander and Burrows gives them a full rotation and would leave them enough money to add a backup C and save some powder for the trade deadline.

Per Chandler and Ken Rosenthal, we're deep in talks for a 3-way trade with Rays and Pirates:

Stros get Mike Burrows from Pirates

Pirates get Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum from Rays

Rays get Melton and Brito from Stros

Burrows went 2-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 96 IP as rookie last year. Would have 6 years of team control.

I like selling high on Brito after his AFL performance and I’ve never been a believer in Melton.

Even if Verlander is coming back, I think we need to add another starter besides Burrows.

Speaking of radio guys, the new 790 guys...oof.

One of them sounds like his balls havent dropped yet.

Don't think he is in that spot for long. Not bad as guest, but listening to him for very long is like that chalk board sound.

Wait, Verlander coming back to the Astros isn't some weird Surly kink like Maldonado?

You just described most of Houston sports radio.

Blubaugh and Ullola are going to be good MLB pitchers. If they add JV with this deal as well they are fine. Unless they want to add an actual legit ace/2. But that has to be the deal or don’t bother just for depth.

Brown, Burrows, JV, Javier, Arrighetti, blubaugh is absolutely fine for the regular season. That leaves you Ullola, Costanza, Gordon (France/ unless I missed him getting waived or something) and whoever else has helium in the minors as depth pieces, before getting Blanco and Wesneski back at all star break or so). Plus Dana’s dumpster diving over the off season. You can shred 3 of those arms (as long as one isn’t Brown) and still expect to get a MLB caliber start out of any of them. It’s missing a reliable co ace/two. If you aren’t going to do that don’t bother.
glad to see the back of Melton. I hated that guy from the minute he was drafted.

Framber is the first guy I am 100% ok with leaving and I know they are going to miss all the innings he threw.

Same here. He was remarkably durable.

Frambers rep is worse with everyone else on here than me. He’s been a TOR guy that pitches a bunch of innings for years. I’d offer him 3/100 or something like that and walk at anything more. 2/70 would be fine with me too. Unless there’s a fair bit of development and draft this teams window ends in 2027. 2 years of Framber would make us legit World Series contenders through 27 and then it’s probably a rebuild.
I’m aware that he’s not at all likely to take that-  it if they are talking to him that would be my offer.

That's my first reaction.  I'm happy to be rid of Melton but losing Brito hurts.  I'll admit to not watching much non-Skenes Pirates so I don't know enough about Burrows to have an informed opinion.

Yeah there's a lot of whistling past the graveyard because of the things people don't like about Framber.  We're going to miss his high quality inning-eating a lot.

He was also up and down in the playoffs but had the potential to swing series when he was on, like Boston Game 5 in 21 and both Philly games in 22.  But maybe he never gets back to that level.  I don't feel good about anyone else that's left starting a playoff game beyond Brown and maybe Javier if he truly regains form - and he's not likely to go beyond 5 or 6 innings.

The problem with Framber is having to commit 200 million to him in the hopes he pitches at that level again.  With his makeup, I don't want to make that bet.  Losing all those innings will suck though.

Did you not watch the last 3rd of the season? The Dude is toast and probably cost us spot in the play-offs. He can go be a mind miniature somewhere else. Also the other MLB teams may be seeing this themselves. The season started to unravel after his comments about the coaches and players.

I don't want him back at all, but some of you are being too negative about him.  Just like I'll always be fond of Joe Musgrove or Chazz or Mancini, I'll always appreciate that no one wanted Framber, and he ended up becoming an ace who was great in the 2022 World Series.

The Astros kicked me in the nuts for decades.  I will look back at this Golden Era and appreciate all the people who made it possible.

Except Mike Fiers, who is a complete piece of shit.

Yeah. I also watched the middle 1/3 of the season where we won 13 of his starts in a row and the previous 4 years where he reserved cy young votes every year. He shot the bed down the stretch no doubt. I think he got in his own head and isn’t cooked or anything. Lie I said- it’s an offer I would make him that he could take if he felt he had to, but it’s not likely he’d take it.

It wasn’t just poor performance in the last 1/3 though. He lost me with the Salazar shit. Probably the only former Astro I’ll actively root against. Felt like the season really went to shit for the whole team after this.
