If we must go bowling in Orlando, I’d very much prefer we play USC. Probably unlikely because Michigan has the tiebreaker.

edit* USC beat Michigan. It can and should be USC if they send us to Orlando.

Are we sure that Oklahoma’s lousy game against LSU ensures them a birth? Again, these are the SEC standings. Why would we jump Alabama before OU or Vandy who we beat H2H?

It'll be interesting to see how many of our NFL-eligible players sit this one out. Ant Hill and who else?

Every player who isn't going to be back next season should not play. Just use it as an experience game for the young guys returning you want to step up into a role next season.

It's just a glorified scrimmage. Means nothing. Just use it as such. Hell, Sark and Moore could probably both agree to that.

It's just a shame if we can't be in the playoffs that our last memory of this team won't be kicking aggy ass.

I think we should keep playing the OSUs of the world, like the Oklahoma and Oregon variety.

Tuesday it will be revealed that the SEC has 7 of the top 14 teams.  This isnt beating #3 Pedo  that ends up 6-6.  This is end of season, most data points available rankings.   We went 3-1 against that field.

This post got entirely too long so I spoilered  the rest

  Hide contents

if You’re going to end up playing 3-4 playoffs teams in the regular season why would you want the additional wear and tear and potential loss carried by playing even more playoff teams before the actual playoffs?  If everyone was doing it, ok, sure.  But they are not, a lot are only playing 1 or 2 and that gives them a strong advantage when losses are the far and away #1 factor in determining playoff inclusion.

That’s why a lot of people are for dumping playoff teams in OOC, there’s no added value to beating tOSU instead of the OSU in mobilhoma.   The old beauty pageant days are over, we get more than enough marquee matchups in conference.  it’s all about the loss column.  Look at our schedule going forward, it’s not a “we are TEXAS” thing it’s a we bring eyeballs thing so the SEC is never giving us Aggies schedule.  We simply offer them far more top rated games.

If you want to keep getting a good share of the best players you better be making the playoffs regularly so you can keep getting those best players.  Spending matters but there will be limits to keep it balanced to prevent someone going full NY Yankees every year.

think it’s kinda funny that we joined the SEC in part to get all the advantages of the SEC hype which was proved out through 13 of the 20 MNCs prior to us joining.  Now we are going to 9 games and a required P4 OOC.  So now it’s the B1G with the advantage, not requiring P4 OOC (hello Indiana) and more dilution with shitty teams allowing their top teams to avoid one another in season.

I think we should schedule one of our big conference games in the first few weeks to let their networks have an early big game (and if you lose, well it’s always better to lose early) and move a tuneup game near the end.  We are going to 9 games instead of 8 so let’s embrace the other SEC method of controlling the narrative.

Hence my Minnesota or even South Dakota st comment. Doesn’t have to be the citadel

There are so many contradictory rationales at work by the playoff committee. I think that since the SEC will guarantee us a strong SOS each year, we just make it simple for those dumbasses and don't confuse them with a tough OOC game to consider. We don't need the win to boost our schedule.

Auburn has an elite defense, and was playing better on offense/have some weapons. The Iron Bowl is the one we needed.

This is not he game the league wanted.

The only tweak needed is to make it a normal playoff like every other goddamn sport in the world.

I don't know why it's still even a conversation. A 2025 Texas team never gets left out of a normal playoff.

Alabama deserves to be in over us no doubt.

OU is questionable. They also had a tough SEC schedule. The difference between the two, other than we beat them H2H, is their blue blood OOC opponent happened to suck this year and ours ended up the undefeated #1 ranked team at the end. Not their fault, they scheduled up like we did in OOC, they just got the luck of the draw that we got last year by getting a Michigan that was a shell of it's Harbaugh era self.

To me that's the only question for the committee. Does our H2H win and harder OOC opponent mean more than their 1 fewer loss due to the easier OOC opponent.

Yep. Fucking LSU runs their mouth as much as aggy and they couldn't even throw a forward pass. Dipshits. Aggy ran their mouths, got their teeth kicked in, played a fucking dog shit schedule, AND were gifted the ND "win.”  I can't wrap my head around why they're ahead of us in conference—by 'they,' I mean ou. Aggy, sure. 1 loss in conference, but their SOS in conference is #13. OU and Vandy? FOH. We beat ou by 3 scores on a neutral field. Fuck this committee if they don't see why we should be in. I guess teams don't get better later in the season.

The argument can be made because we lost to Florida, but that was week 5, we're in week 12. We lost to Georgia in their place that they were favored in. I guess beating ou on a neutral field is just meaningless. Same with fucking up an undefeated team by double digits in the last game of the regular season is just "it happens." What a joke.

There's no way to do a "normal playoff" with well over 100 teams eligible and conferences that are completely unbalanced. The entire system would have to be scrapped and redone to get rid of the auto bids for weak conferences by eliminating weak conferences.

Posted

There is only one version of events that allows Texas to make the playoff, and that is if during the offseason the committee was told that priority would be for Q1 wins (CFB equivalent of top 10 wins), aka odds to win the natty.

Meaning they will go with the best teams, they already did it to punish FSU and we will see if they repeat it again (including leaving Ole Miss out entirely however extremely unlikely it would be), Bama last year was a bad precedent for us, but at the same time they did not have the Q1 wins that could vault them over SMU.

Honestly I am not 100% on board, but it is mostly because while I think the team is way better than most it had a horrific road record and we would have to go to Eugene or South Bend which looks bleak.

Vertical is power rating.  Horizontal just spreads out of conferences evenly with some jitter to avoid overlap.  It's just a useful way to compare the parity and strength of conferences.

This ultimately boils down to the evolving preference for playoff games over regular-season games. The larger the playoff, the less important the regular season becomes. Personally, I would like a little balance there and to avoid these "bubble" issues for teams that would be worth having in the playoffs. Eventually the quality of the playoff games goes down too if it gets too large.

  • Hook 'Em 2

The other part of this discussion is the difference between judging who the twelve best teams are and judging what the twelve best records are. If all we're doing is judging records, Texas is a bubble team, on the outside looking in.

But anyone who actually watches these games would know that especially once we benched Connor Stroh and moved Cole Hutson to Guard the Longhorns are a much better team than the team who lost in Columbus and Gainesville. Vandy has lost to the post-switchup Longhorns, and Oklahoma lost to a version of the Longhorns that is even worse than the current version. So has aggy.

The loss to Florida has to be accounted for, of course, but the correct way to account for that loss is not by pretending Longhorns in November are a worse team than they actually are by pretending that teams like Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Utah, and BYU are better. Or even if we're being honest, Notre Dame, who is 1-1 against common opponents that Texas is 2-0 against.

Exactly. No one except us. We also have the #6 SOS while beating two CFP teams. If they want to keep holding on to the UF loss, then that's fucking dipshittery. That was week 5, we're in week 12. The loss was brutal, but who gives a shit? Most teams hadn't found their footing at that point yet. That's what pisses me off. That, and the "third" loss, which shouldn't count since 1. It wasn't a conference game, and 2. It was the most watched game of the season, I believe. They made money off of it. If they can't see we lost by 1 TD but we also had 200 more yards in their home, I don't know what to say. Why even bother scheduling teams like that if we get punished?

Yeah, I love them, but I love wanting to have a chance to see my team win a NC more. So if dropping a marquee game like that needs to happen for us to get in the CFP, so be it. Schedule Rice. I'm fine playing whomever. It's not like you and I are making money off the marquee games, so fuck it.

This is the best way. If guys are hurt, play someone else. That's why you recruit elite players, so they can get playing time when someone in front of them gets injured or plays like shit in a game.

IF you really do not want Big games then call the AD and have them very publicly start reneging agreements to play powerful teams in non-con.  But as much as it stings we got dealt a tougher schedule than most, and it was timed in a way that was markedly different from the majority of the SEC.  We chose to do this sort of schedule because it is a pathway to the Championship series, but execution is key.  And stubbing our toe at Florida was a really bad stub.  Left us limping through Kentucky and Miss State, edging out OT wins vs those powerhouses.  We played a fantastic second half versus A&M.  And I do believe at this point in time, we are more dangerous than half the teams ranked above us.

But fuck, we beat a shitty bad Florida team, and this whole conversation is moot.  The fact we were also grossly overhyped to start the season made the focus on our early season struggles even more noticeable.  Will Texas be punished in the rankings for losing to Ohio State?  Ultimately the answer is yes.  So now the question for our AD is do you schedule great games to make buying season tickets amazing occasionally?  Or do you go with a doormat lineup you still pay top dollar for, and have a better chance to make an expanded playoff?

My vote is to still play the big OOC opponents.  Because if you are honest, did it hurt Ohio State this season? We are a good team, not a great team this year.  The loss to Florida was inexcusable, but so were OT victories vs Miss State and Kentucky!  All of those games were games where we should have been giving second string players reps to gain experience in the second half. Instead we barely survived, after starting off the season with a #1 ranking in some polls.  That is fucking embarrassing.  We looked great against Ohio State and not so good for most of the season.  In the end it is a style point and win/loss evaluation.  It's NOT a looking at each team and saying who are the scariest teams to play in college football at this point in time?  We win the games we should have, and we are in.

So do you prefer watching Ohio State or Sam Houston State?  Is the risk versus reward there or not?  In the end it's a question our AD has to answer.

we played #1, #3 and #8 on the road.  We played #6? And #8 at home. Our other loss and 2 close games were on the road.  We had a 2 month stretch away from DKR, that’s one of the toughest schedules conceivable even if you removed #1 on the road and replaced with a tomato can like Oregon State.

I can't stand him, but Booger McFarland brought up Kentucky and MSU in his analysis as well when discussing Texas year long performance. Hell UTEP is 2-10, ahead of only SHSU in conference USA and we beat them by 17 fucking points at home.

Booger is a moron.  For the Kentucky/MSU game, then counter that with double digit wins against OU and aggy.   Mateer has stated his injury was not related to his performance in that game (credit to him) but some of the talking heads think he doesn't know shit about himself.  So that is two double digit wins against locks for the playoffs.   Playing sloppy early, and using a different offensive scheme early in the season doesn't mean shit.  I seem to recall a tOSU team that had a ton of close games vs mediocre teams and still won the MNC.

These dipshits either have no memory or no reasoning ability.

If there was any proof this is only about the number of losses look no further than Bama's loss at FSU. That is objectively worse than our loss at Florida but since they played a weak Wisconsin team instead of Ohio State they are getting the benefit of the doubt.

That's why everyone is talking about that game against Ohio State and the loss to Florida is irrelevant to the conversation. If we'd played Purdue instead of Ohio State then we're comfortably in the field and likely host a playoff game.

And before anyone goes "hurr durr they beat Georgia" remember they also lost AT HOME to Oklahoma who we clobbered at a neutral site.

The bottom line is this is run by a bunch of empty suits who make up the rules as they go along in order to have as little controversy as possible. They don't want to have to answer questions about why a 3 loss SEC team is in over a 2 loss (or even 1 loss) team from another conference. It would require actually defending the resume's and they cannot be bothered with that.

In a way, Texas broke the SEC.  They abandoned their identity of no weeks off, so quickly after Texas joined and started kicking their collective asses in.  Dipshit SEC podcasters and talking heads alike are now performing what they think are mental gymnastics to come to terms with that reality.
